Philodendron mexicanum

Philodendron mexicanum is a wet-tropical climbing species with glossy, arrow-shaped green leaves and red undersides that are especially visible on juvenile growth. As the plant matures, the blades become larger and more defined, with the climbing stem producing aerial roots at the nodes.

Younger leaves show the red-backed colour most clearly, while older foliage develops the broader sagittate outline typical of the species.

  • Leaf shape: Arrow-shaped to hastate blades with a broad base and pointed tip.
  • Leaf colour: Glossy green upper surfaces with red undersides most noticeable on younger leaves.
  • Growth habit: A climbing Philodendron with aerial roots along the stem.
  • Native range: Recorded from Mexico to western Colombia in wet tropical forest conditions.

Philodendron mexicanum care for climbing growth

Give Philodendron mexicanum a moss pole, plank or other vertical support so the stem can attach as it lengthens. Bright indirect light keeps the growth compact and reduces stretched internodes, while harsh direct sun can mark the leaves, especially on softer new growth.

  • Support: A vertical surface gives aerial roots somewhere to attach as the plant produces larger, more defined blades on upright growth.
  • Light: Bright indirect light, with protection from strong direct sun.
  • Water: Water when the upper part of the substrate has dried, then let excess water drain fully.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps new leaves open cleanly, especially during active growth.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, coarse fibre and mineral components so air reaches the roots.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and stable, away from cold windows and cold wet substrate.

Philodendron mexicanum leaf size, roots and pests

  • Small leaves or long gaps between nodes: Usually linked to weak light, missing support or both.
  • Yellowing lower leaves: Check for dense, wet substrate around the roots.
  • Dry new leaves: Increase humidity around active growth and keep watering consistent without leaving the pot waterlogged.
  • Pests: Inspect new leaves, petioles and undersides for thrips, spider mites, mealybugs and scale.

Philodendron mexicanum safety, name and publication

Keep Philodendron mexicanum away from pets and children, as the plant contains calcium oxalate crystals. Sap may irritate sensitive skin.

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott published the genus Philodendron in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst 3: 780 in 1829. The genus name comes from Greek-derived roots meaning “tree-loving.” Philodendron mexicanum was described by Adolf Engler in Flora Brasiliensis 3(2): 143 in 1878. The species epithet mexicanum means “Mexican” or “from Mexico.”

Fun dog toy, but not for heavy chewers
Color: Pink, Size: 14 IN
The armadillo is cute. My pittie, Sasha, was very excited to see it. She just had TPLO surgery on her left knee (she tore her ACL just before the 4th of July), and I wanted to get her something she could play with while she convalesces, that isn't a ball—she really likes to run and jump and chase the ball, but with her knee out of commission, I didn't want her to get depressed being trapped in her crate while she heals—with this toy, she was able to keep playing and not over excert herself and get more hurt. It quickly became her favorite toy; she chews it relentlessly and gets made when I take it from her (see below). It makes a funky squeak that's not a high-pitched squeak, like I thought it would be; it's more a low-pitched, lowing sound like a baby calf. One thing I would like to point out to other purchasers about what the description says: "Durable and Long Lasting - Made from premium soft materials, our cute plush dog toys can withstand rough play for indoor or outdoor and last for years to come. The textured surface also helps massage and soothe your dog's gums during playtime" This is a little misleading. It's a good texture and Sasha loved to play with it, but it wasn't very durable. It might be when compared to other chew toys, but not for my baby. She tore the nose off within 20 minutes of getting it. The next morning, she ripped off an ear, and I had to pull the stuffing out of the face so she wouldn't eat it while chewing away. She doesn't seem to mind, but I sure wish it had held up a little more. All-in-all, this was a good toy for a few days.

Must buy!
Color: Grape
My dogs love this and so do I. It really smells like “fun grape” like a fun smelling marker. It’s gentle for their teeth and durable! They are both interested in it and take turns using it, pretty awesome!

Great for SuperChewers. Keeps my Golden busy.
Color: Bear, Color: Bear
My dog loves it and it keeps her busy for a while. She actually pulls it out of her toy basket and brings it to me when she wants it filled. I break her treats into some pieces that are easy to get and some a little harder. This way she doesn’t get them too fast or loose interest if they’re harder to get. Also, she’s had it for 3 months and there’s barely a mark on it and she’s still a puppy that chews her toys to pieces.

Mostly happy
Color: Grape
Have a 1 1/2 yr old Belgian Malinois who needs things to do. I bought these and he loved it. Bad thing, it took him 1 day to chew the rope off both grape and pineapple. The stems on the cherry were also chewed off. The rest of the toy is intact and he still loves it.
