Selaginella lepidophylla, often known as the Rose of Jericho, resurrection plant or dinosaur plant, is native to desert regions of North America. It is famous for surviving long dry periods by curling up into dormancy, then opening again when watered. Simply place it in a shallow dish, add a little water to the base and watch it begin to open within hours.
Please note: this is the resurrection plant Selaginella lepidophylla, often sold as Rose of Jericho. It is not the rarer biblical “true” Rose of Jericho.

How to revive your resurrection plant
- Place the plant in a shallow bowl or dish, ideally with pebbles beneath it
- Add a small amount of water so it reaches the base only and do not fully submerge
- Rainwater or distilled water is best if available
- You should see it begin to unfurl within hours, with fuller opening over 1–3 days
Care tips
- Light: Bright, indirect light
- Important: Do not keep constantly wet
- Enjoy it open for a few days, then allow it to dry out completely before reviving again
- Refresh the water regularly and rinse the bowl between uses
- Avoid cold draughts and direct heat from radiators
This plant is not meant to stay in water all the time. Regular dry periods are essential. If any fronds turn dark or soft, it has usually been left wet for too long, so allow it to dry fully before the next revival.
