Goeppertia (Calathea) roseopicta 'Angela'

Goeppertia (Calathea) roseopicta 'Angela' is a rose-painted prayer plant with rounded leaves in soft green, pink and burgundy tones. The upper side usually shows a pink midrib, darker green framing and paler pink-green markings that become clearer as the leaf opens. The undersides are purple to burgundy, so the plant shows extra colour when the leaves lift in the evening.

'Angela' grows from a short rhizome and slowly fills out as a leafy clump. New leaves rise on individual petioles from the base, first rolled, then opening into broad oval blades. Over time, the plant gains width and density, with new shoots adding fresh pattern through the centre and around the sides of the pot.

What you’ll notice on Goeppertia roseopicta 'Angela'

  • Leaf shape: Broad oval to rounded leaves with smooth surfaces and softly waved mature edges.
  • Pattern: Pink midrib, darker green framing and pale pink-green markings on the upper surface.
  • Undersides: Purple to burgundy lower leaf surfaces that show when the leaves move upward.
  • Growth habit: Rhizomatous, clump-forming growth with new leaves rising from the base.
  • Indoor conditions: Warm, bright-shaded placement with steady moisture and higher humidity.

Where Goeppertia roseopicta 'Angela' comes from

Goeppertia roseopicta belongs to Marantaceae, the prayer plant family. Calathea roseopicta is the older synonym. The species is native from western South America to western Brazil, where it grows in wet tropical conditions.

'Angela' has leaves built for filtered light, fine roots that need moisture and air in the mix, and thin edges that react quickly to dry air. Evening leaf movement is normal for this group and does not mean the plant is wilting.

Keeping Goeppertia roseopicta 'Angela' happy indoors

  • Light: Place in bright indirect light or bright shade. Direct midday sun can scorch the soft leaves, while very dim light slows new growth.
  • Watering: Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist. Water when the upper 10–25% of the potting mix has started to dry, then let the pot drain fully.
  • Water quality: Use rainwater, filtered water or low-mineral water where possible. Brown tips often show up faster with hard water, dry air or fertiliser build-up.
  • Substrate: Use a moisture-holding but airy mix with fine bark, coco fibre or peat-free organic matter, plus perlite or pumice for structure.
  • Humidity: Aim for around 60% humidity or higher. A humidifier, grouped plants or a warm display cabinet can help new leaves open more cleanly.
  • Temperature: Keep steady at about 18–26°C. Cold windowsills, draughts and chilled wet substrate can stress the roots.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced fertiliser at reduced strength. Sensitive Marantaceae roots do better with gentle feeding.
  • Repotting: Repot when the clump has filled its pot with roots and shoots. Move up only slightly in pot size so the mix does not stay wet for too long.
  • Propagation: Divide established clumps during repotting, keeping roots and growing points attached to each section.

Common issues with Goeppertia roseopicta 'Angela'

  • Brown leaf tips: Check humidity, water quality, watering gaps and fertiliser strength. Trim only the dry tissue once the cause is corrected.
  • Curled leaves during the day: Check the rootball for dryness, look for strong light or heat, and move the plant away from draughts.
  • Yellowing lower leaves: One older leaf can fade naturally, but several yellow leaves at once usually point to wet, compacted mix or cold roots.
  • Rolled new leaves stalling: Low humidity, dry root pockets or cool conditions can slow leaf opening. Stabilise warmth and moisture before changing anything else.
  • Fine speckling or dull patches: Check the undersides for spider mites or thrips, especially during dry indoor periods.

Simple habits that keep 'Angela' looking good

Keep the potting mix evenly moist, humidity steady and placement stable while new leaves are forming. Wipe dust from the leaves with a soft damp cloth so the pattern stays clear and early pest signs are easier to spot.

Pet safety for Goeppertia roseopicta 'Angela'

Goeppertia (Calathea) roseopicta 'Angela' is generally considered pet-safe, with Calathea spp. listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it away from pets that chew plants often, because swallowed plant material can still cause mild digestive upset.

What the name roseopicta means

Goeppertia honours Heinrich Göppert, a German botanist and paleobotanist. The older genus name Calathea is generally derived from Greek kalathos, meaning a basket or basket-like vessel. The species epithet roseopicta means “rose-painted”, referring to the pink-toned markings of this species group.

Goeppertia roseopicta 'Angela' has rounded leaves with soft pink markings, burgundy undersides and a compact clumping shape.

Decent shelf but could be improved upon
Color: White, Size: 31.5"L x 8"D, Set of 2
Not bad but could be a little more sturdy. We used longer and a little larger screws to try to make it better and that did help but it still has a little wobble in it. It will serve the purpose for me in my bathroom. They look nice except it would be nice if they would include some of those little covers to go over the screws in the bottom of the shelf so you wouldn’t see them. They really show up on the white shelves.

Really Nice Shelves BUT....
Color: Rustic Brown, Size: 36"L x 8"D, Set of 2, Color: Rustic Brown, Size: 36"L x 8"D, Set of 2
I do like these shelves, they look great for cheaper low end particle board made to look like wood. However I took off stars because they made installation unnecessarily hard. I'll explain.... If you look in my picture the mounting bracket has plenty of options/slots to use. AND in the instructions they clearly show you how to find studs to properly mount the brackets. Meaning the manufacturer know stud distance. They even show in the instructions that studs are clesrly 16" apart! Now get this, the mounting brackets are plenty long enough (roughly 22" without measuring) to mount on two studs 16" apart so the shelves are mounted in wood which is stronger and superior mounting instead of drywall. HOWEVER, THE SLOTTED HOLES ON THE MOUNTING BRACKET ARE NOT 16" APART. None of them. There's tons of slotted holes to use on the bracket and zero of them are 16" apart. Now if I want to mount screws jn 2 studs I have to drill in the mounting bracket to make a new hole. Taking up extra time, messing with the integrity of the mounting steel. I don't understand. It's almost like they did this on purpose. What should have been a 10-15 minute install turned into getting proper drill bits, drilling metal, and taking 45-50 minutes to do it properly. It just put a sour taste in my mouth and that is my reasoning for the 3 of 5 starts. I would make it 3.5 stars if it was an option. Otherwise the shelves look pretty decent for low end shelving. I recommend them only if you're handy with a drill and tape measure. If you can handle drilling the mount bracket to go into a stud, go ahead and grab these.
