Philodendron 'Lisa' – Rare Hybrid with Burgundy New Growth and Dark Metallic Leaves

Philodendron 'Lisa' is a striking new hybrid cultivar, believed to be a cross of Philodendron 'Majesty' and Philodendron 'Red Beauty'. It inherits the elegant, upright growth of its parentage while showcasing a dramatic colour shift: new leaves emerge a rich burgundy, then gradually darken into deep metallic green with dark red undersides. A compact, self-heading philodendron that brings bold colour contrast into any collection.

Key features of Philodendron 'Lisa'

  • Leaf colour: juvenile foliage in burgundy, maturing into dark metallic green.
  • Undersides: abaxial surfaces remain a deep red, contrasting with the darker upper blade.
  • Growth habit: upright, self-heading hybrid that forms a neat rosette.
  • Parentage: thought to combine the traits of 'Majesty' and 'Red Beauty'.

Background and breeding

Although not formally published, 'Lisa' has quickly gained popularity among collectors for combining the rich burgundy tones of red philodendrons with the refined, metallic finish of darker hybrids. Its compact habit makes it easier to manage than large climbing types, while still offering dramatic visual appeal.

Care tips for Philodendron 'Lisa'

  • Light: bright, indirect light maintains strong colour; avoid intense direct sun.
  • Temperature: thrives at 20 – 28 °C; avoid exposure below 16 °C.
  • Humidity: prefers 60 – 80% for optimal leaf size and gloss.
  • Watering: allow the top 2 – 3 cm of substrate to dry between waterings; avoid soggy soil.
  • Substrate: chunky aroid mix with bark, coco coir, and perlite ensures aeration and drainage.
  • Feeding: monthly, diluted fertiliser during active growth enhances leaf colour and vigour.

Potential issues and solutions

  • Faded burgundy: insufficient light reduces red tones; increase filtered brightness.
  • Yellowing leaves: usually from overwatering or poor substrate aeration.
  • Brown tips: low humidity or inconsistent watering; stabilise both for smooth foliage.
  • Pests: monitor for mites and thrips, especially on tender new growth.

Collector’s notes

  • Rarity: still uncommon in trade, prized for its unique colour transitions.
  • Comparison: combines the upright elegance of 'Majesty' with the bold colour of 'Red Beauty'.
  • Display: compact form makes it perfect for tabletops or as a colour accent in larger displays.
  • Toxicity: like all philodendrons, contains calcium oxalate; avoid ingestion by pets and children.

Etymology

Genus:Philodendron (Schott, 1830), from Greek philo- “loving” + dendron “tree,” a reference to the genus’ natural climbing habit. Self-heading cultivars like 'Lisa' retain the name while forming upright rosettes.

Propagation and size

  • Propagation: stem cuttings or basal division under warm, humid conditions.
  • Rooting medium: sphagnum moss or a fine bark/perlite blend encourages strong rooting.
  • Indoor size: compact, usually 50 – 90 cm tall; manageable compared to climbing philodendrons.

Why Philodendron 'Lisa' deserves attention

Compact, colourful, and rare, Philodendron 'Lisa' is a hybrid that blends burgundy new growth with metallic dark foliage in a tidy self-heading form. A plant that brings both elegance and drama to any indoor collection.

Size and Belching
The softgels are too large and the contents causes belching due to the fish oil included. The fish oil is one of the worst smelling I've ever experienced. Perhaps this would be a better product if they eliminate the fish oil. Women's softgels should be much smaller. If I could send it back I would do so. Since I can't, I threw it away and chalked it up to poor judgement on my part. Definitely a waste of money.

Huge bottle that lasta over half the year
I have been using this product for a while now because I routinely have low iron counts. Originally my doctor had me on an iron supplement but told me in the last year I could switch to a multivitamin with iron instead. I found that this is not the easiest thing to find, especially if you only want to have to take one vitamin a day. I like that the bottle has 200 soft gels which lasts over half a year before you have to worry about ordering more. And the last couple times I have had my iron levels checked they have been back in the normal range.

Good
I love these! They have a little smell to them but my stomach favors these types of vitamins rather than the chalky ones.

Good pain relief. Fair price and no side effects.
Size: 30 Count (Pack of 1)
I take this for its ability to block interleukin 1b and interleukin 6 and cox 1 and 2 enzymes without side effects or harm to liver or kidneys. This brand seems to be working well. I tried the Hawaii brand BioAstin 90 caps for $48 and this brand seems to be about the same price per cap. I have not noticed any difference in quality. Information: Astaxanthin works as an anti-inflammatory through multiple pathways. The various mechanisms of action for Astaxanthin as an anti-inflammatory have been demonstrated in several studies (Lee, et al, 2003; Ohgami, et al, 2003; Choi, et al, 2008; Kishimoto, et al, 2010). This research has consistently shown that Astaxanthin works on a variety of different causes of inflammation. In fact, there is evidence that it works on six different inflammatory markers, but that it works in a gentle, broad-spectrum manner. This is in distinct contrast to anti-inflammatory drugs such as Celebrex® and Vioxx® as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs including Tylenol®, Motrin®, Alleve®, etc.) and aspirin, all of which target a single inflammatory marker, but in an intense manner. Inflammatory markers gently reduced by Astaxanthin include: • Prostaglandin E-2 • Interleukin 1b • Interleukin 6 • Tumor Necrosis Factor-A • Nitric Oxide et al, 2010) • Cox 1 & 2 enzymes (Lee, et al, 2003; Ohgami, et al, 2003; Choi, et al, 2008; Kishimoto, Natural Astaxanthin has never been reported to have any side effect or contraindication in hundreds of medical research studies as well as over 15 years of commercial consumer use.
