Enchanted Forest Gay Goblin Pieris (Pieris japonica 'Cabernet')

Enchanted Forest Gay Goblin Pieris is an evergreen shrub that delivers year-round structure and rich color in part-shade landscapes. It is especially valuable for adding bold new growth tones that make foundation beds and woodland borders feel more finished and intentional. Because it holds its leaves through winter, it keeps the landscape looking alive even when perennials are dormant. If you want an easy shrub that brings both foliage color and spring bloom, this pieris is a strong fit.

Distinctive Features

This selection is grown for its dramatic new growth, which emerges in deep red to burgundy tones before maturing to glossy, dark green evergreen foliage. In early to mid spring, it produces drooping clusters of small, urn-shaped white flowers that add a soft layer of bloom against the darker leaves. Flower buds often develop ahead of bloom and can add seasonal interest before the flowers open. Its dense, upright to rounded habit makes it a dependable mid-height anchor for shaded gardens that need color beyond flowers.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Partial shade is ideal, with morning sun and afternoon shade helping protect foliage color and reduce stress.
  • Soil: Acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during dry periods to prevent stress.
  • USDA Zones: Zones 5 to 8.
  • Spacing: Plant about 4 to 6 feet apart depending on the mature size you want to maintain.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point near an entry or along a main sightline where the burgundy new growth and evergreen form provide year-round presence.
  • Foundation Plantings: Add evergreen structure and seasonal color to shaded sides of the home.
  • Woodland Borders: Brighten part-shade beds with foliage contrast and spring flowers.
  • Mixed Shrub Beds: Pair with azaleas, rhododendrons, and hollies for layered texture and consistent structure.
  • Evergreen Massing: Plant in groups to create a dense backdrop with color shifts through the growing season.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply during dry spells and avoid letting the root zone dry out completely.
  • Mulching: Mulch with pine bark or shredded leaves to conserve moisture and support acidic soil conditions.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly right after flowering to shape, and remove spent flower clusters if you prefer a cleaner look.
  • Feeding: Fertilize in spring with an acid-loving shrub fertilizer if growth is slow or foliage is pale.
  • Protection: Shelter from drying winter winds and harsh afternoon sun to reduce leaf stress.

Why Choose Enchanted Forest Gay Goblin Pieris?

  • Rich New Growth: Deep red to burgundy emerging leaves add bold seasonal color in part shade.
  • Evergreen Structure: Glossy foliage provides year-round form and a clean backdrop for other plants.
  • Spring Flowers: Drooping clusters of white blooms add a soft, refined layer of interest.
  • Multi-Season Appeal: Buds, bloom, and foliage color changes keep the plant interesting beyond one moment.
  • Shade Friendly: Performs well in part shade where many shrubs struggle to look their best.

If you want a dependable evergreen with dramatic spring growth color, Enchanted Forest Gay Goblin Pieris is an excellent choice. Give it acidic soil, steady moisture, and some protection from harsh exposure, and it will stay polished and attractive through the seasons. It brings structure, contrast, and a clean spring bloom display to part-shade gardens.

Fun for dogs
Color: Green/Alligator, Size: Small
Smaller than I expected, but the two little dogs love it! They love shaking it, making it squeak, tugging it against each other & chasing it when I throw it to fetch. They often sleep laying on it.

WEIRD feature - requires a water bottle
Color: Cow, Size: Large
Cute, but buyer beware. Maybe the description said this, but who would think to read for this.... You have to insert an empty bottle (like an old water bottle) for it to make the crinkle noise. There is a velcro spot at the base where you can open it and insert the water bottle for the noise factor and your dogs entertainment. I've yet to do that, but feel like my dog is gonna figure out the velcro and get the bottle out in no time. Seems like a waste of money. I could just give her an empty water bottle without the toy for free.

Color: Multicolor/Alligator & Wild Duck, Size: Medium, Color: Multicolor/Alligator & Wild Duck, Size: Medium
Best dog toy! Most dog toys lady maybe a week or less but this one has been going strong for almost 2 months. Both the squeekers still work on both toys i purchased. My vizsla loves ti squeek and carry it around. We added an empty water bottle in the pocket cavity for some extra fun! Yes, we are still on the same water bottle! Fantastic durability.

Shows wear quickly
Color: Multicolor/Sheep & Cow, Size: Medium
These are cute but not holding up as well as I had hoped. Quality is ok and the Velcro has held up great. The fabric just isn’t as good as it could be. They are much larger than expected.

Super Sturdy with hours of fun.
Color: Wild Duck, Hare, Squirrel & Alligator, Size: Small
I got the small ones that you cannot put a water bottle in. These toys have held up way better than expected. I am dog sitting a very rough with toys dog named Chunk. He tears up ever. Single. Toy my dog (Ted) has. I bought new ones just for chunk. These appealed to me with the no stuffing, They were cheaper, and have a squeaker. Everything chunk needed. They arrived on time and I thought I wasted my money. They were super soft, like too soft. They felt flimsy and weak. Like 5 minutes with chunk and they be dead. 2 hours with my dog and they would have a rip. So far 2 of them (I set two out) have lasted the whole weekend. The bunny looks very rough and disgusting, but no rips, the squeakers still work, and no random fluff everywhere. I am going to wash the bunny once chunk leaves. My very careful doggo Ted loves them too. He throws them up in the air and catches them, plays tug of war with them, and no rips. They are super sturdy. He can’t wait until Chunk leaves (chunk is 2 and Ted is 12-13) so he can play with them.
