John Deere 246 & 446 Corn Planter / 247 & 447 Cotton Planter Operator's Manual

This is the Operator's Manual for the John Deere 246 and 446 Corn Planters and the John Deere 247 and 447 Cotton Planters, covering setup, operation, planting adjustments, marker systems, and the full range of optional attachments across 68 pages. This is the original factory-issued guide for all four models and is available as an instant digital download.

About the John Deere 246, 247, 446, and 447 Planters

The 246, 247, 446, and 447 were John Deere's unit-type row crop planters from the mid-20th century, designed to be mounted on toolbar frames in 2-row, 4-row, and wider configurations depending on row spacing and tractor horsepower. The 246 and 446 were configured for corn planting, while the 247 and 447 were the cotton variants — sharing the same basic planter unit mechanics but fitted with cotton-specific hoppers, seed plates, and cell-drop attachments. The distinction between the numbered pairs (246/247 versus 446/447) reflected different toolbar mounting and marker configurations. These planters used a cell-drop metering system in which the seed plate rotated through the seed supply and carried individual seeds to the furrow — a system that required correct plate selection matched to seed size and shape, and proper rotor timing for consistent spacing. The 247 and 447 cotton variants also accommodated fine seed and peanut attachments, making the manual relevant for a broader range of specialty crop applications than the model names suggest. These planters were widely used across the Corn Belt and Cotton Belt and remain in use on small acreages today.

What This Manual Covers

This 68-page manual covers all four planter models from identification and specifications through field operation, marker systems, and the complete attachment lineup. Key sections include:

  • General Information & Specifications — identification views; factory specifications; model-specific component identification for all four variants
  • Operation — preparing the tractor; attaching the planter; preparing for field operation; transport procedures; planting depth adjustment; drill planting procedures; plant population adjustment; hill-drop planting operation; field safety
  • Marker Systems — marker operation and adjustment for 246/247 and 446/447 configurations separately
  • Attachments & Optional Equipment — fertilizer attachments; insecticide and herbicide attachments; gauge shoes; pre-emerge sprayer; double-disk openers; cotton cell-drop attachment (247 & 447); double-disk furrowers and covering knives; press wheel bands and rubber press wheel tires; brush cut-off and baffle plate (247 & 447); fine seed attachment (247 & 447); shelled and unshelled peanut attachments; pea or bean attachments; ratchet drive sprocket
  • Lubrication & Assembly — lubrication points and service intervals; complete assembly procedures

Why This Manual Matters

  • Corn and cotton in one document: The 246/446 and 247/447 share the same basic unit mechanics but differ in hoppers, seed plates, and cotton-specific attachments — this manual documents both, covering the cross-model differences that create confusion when sourcing replacement parts or converting between crop types
  • Seed plate selection and population charts: Matching the correct seed plate to seed size and adjusting for target plant population are the foundational planting tasks — the factory charts and plate selection guidance in this manual are the reference source for getting those settings right
  • Hill-drop and drill configurations: Both planting modes are documented with separate operating procedures, important when switching crops or adapting the planter to different field conditions
  • Cotton-specific attachment documentation: The cell-drop attachment, brush cut-off, fine seed attachment, and cotton-specific hopper configurations for the 247 and 447 are documented here — information that generic corn planter resources won't contain
  • Full attachment coverage: The extensive optional equipment section documents fertilizer, herbicide, insecticide, peanut, and pea/bean attachments — covering the planter's full capability range rather than just its base configuration
  • Original factory content: This is the manual John Deere issued to 246/446/247/447 owners, carrying manual code OM-825366

Manual Code: OM-825366

Gotta Buy Them All!!
Scent: Keratin
I currently have these sets: - Rice Water - Keratin - Biotin - Cleanser I have been a hairstylist for about fourteen years and have tried EVERY expensive, professional salon brand product out there that promised great results for moisture, repair, scalp health, etc. and none serve the purpose for more than a day or two. These products have been a game changer. I have very curly, fine-medium strands with high density that is consistently dry, brittle, extremely frizzy, and tends to clump together with most products I have used that promise to repair and assist. I started using the cleanser (I recommend using it ONCE a week at max -- it exceeds the expectations and will leave your hair feeling stripped and dry if you use it too often) to start with, to remove build-up. My hair obviously felt incredibly dry after this, so I washed a second time with Biotin and then finished with the biotin conditioner -- for the first time in years, my hair feels AMAZING. It has been three days since the last wash. My hair typically feels heavy and weighed down after the first day. I usually braid my hair lightly and put it in a silk bonnet and I wake up with it having absorbed any bit of moisture it can, and it still felt like straw. After two uses of the biotin, I am able to go 3-4 days between washes and my hair and scalp still feel light, fluffy, fresh, and my hair is incredibly soft. My curls went from loose, messy waves to finally retaining the curl pattern again. My hair isn't breaking off every time I run a pick through it. I can actually easily detangle it while the conditioner is in, and was able to leave the conditioner in for a treatment overnight and it felt even better. My roommates have been using the various ones I have gotten for us, as well, and expressed really enjoying working with their hair again afterward. It responds well to other products cleanses really well afterward. Just a reminder: Most of these are sulfate free. You will not get much in the way of bubbly lathers from this, but your hair WILL be clean. Work it into your hair for 3-5 minutes before rinsing the shampoo out and even let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing while you do everything else. More does not equal better -- this product goes a long way! We just purchased the Apple Cider Vinegar and Nettle formulas and I'll update if they are not as great as the others!

Buy it!!!! Amazing!!!!
Scent: Rice Water
I purchased the Rice Water set..... And let me tell you, I don't think I will ever go back to using anything else!!! I have only used once as I just got it yesterday, and I am truly blown away by the outcome already!!! My hair is extremely, unbelievably damaged from blonde and excessive heat. It has been breaking and thinning like crazy and really just makes me cry sometimes! (I am also 40 so there's that age factor too. I have just started on several quality vitamins, I've decided I will lay off going to the salon and let the blonde grow out, and I have been avoiding heat for a couple weeks now but it has still been super dry and brittle). Well one use of this shampoo/conditioner set and my hair is SO SOFT, SMOOTH, AND SHINY!!!! Like whaaaaat?!? And it smells absolutely wonderful! Not an overpowering perfumy smell, but just a very soft, subtle, and sweet smell! This is definitely a keeper!!! Buy it girl, you won't regret it!! 🙌🏼🥰

Works right away
Scent: Purple
Perfect for wanting your blonde to be on the white side and not yellowish or brassy look. Great of upkeep in-between salon visits. Hair feels moisturized after and soft. BE CAREFUL as this does STAIN your hands and white in the shower / bath. Rinse it off your hands immediately. Bleach will remove any drops or drips. Has a ton. of pigment in it so everything must be throughly rinsed. (no need to freak out first time but it is a bit messy so be prepared but results worth it)

Great products
The Ordinary Serum Favorites Set is a great way to try some of the brand’s most popular products without committing to full sizes. Each serum feels lightweight and absorbs quickly, making it easy to layer into a routine. I noticed my skin looked smoother and more balanced after a couple of weeks of use. The simple, no-frills formulas are effective and perfect for anyone who wants targeted skincare without the high price tag. Overall, a smart and budget-friendly starter set
