Opuntia ‘Baby Rita’ is a dwarf prickly pear cultivar known for its small, paddle-shaped pads and striking purple-to-blue-green coloration, which deepens under strong light and cool temperatures. Compared to larger Opuntia species, it stays relatively compact and container-friendly, making it a great choice for windowsills, sunny patios, and small gardens.

Like all prickly pears, it has glochids (tiny hair-like spines that can be irritating) so this is a “look, don’t touch” kind of plant.

How to Grow Indoors

Light
Bright light with as much direct sun as you can give it. A south- or west-facing window is ideal. Strong light encourages compact growth and rich purple tones.

Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out completely. During winter or low-light periods, water very sparingly. Overwatering is the fastest way to lose this plant.

Soil
Fast-draining cactus soil is essential. Adding extra pumice or coarse sand improves drainage further.

Temperature
Prefers warm conditions but tolerates cool nights well. Protect from frost indoors.

Humidity
No special requirements. Average indoor humidity is perfect.

Fertilizer
Optional. If desired, feed lightly with a diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice during spring and summer.

Growth Habit
Slow to moderate. Pads stack gradually, forming a low, sculptural clump over time.

How to Grow Outdoors

(San Francisco–specific)

Opuntia ‘Baby Rita’ does very well outdoors in San Francisco.

  • Thrives in full sun to very bright exposure

  • Excellent in containers or raised beds with sharp drainage

  • Tolerates cool coastal temperatures and occasional winter rain if soil drains quickly

This is a great low-maintenance cactus for sunny decks, patios, and xeriscape-style plantings.

🌸 Blooming

Under strong light and outdoor conditions, mature plants may produce bright pink-magenta flowers in spring or early summer, followed by small ornamental fruits.

🐾 Pet Safety

Not pet safe.
According to ASPCA guidance for Opuntia species, ingestion may cause irritation, and glochids pose a physical hazard. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

⚠️ Notes & Tips

  • Always handle with tongs or thick gloves—glochids are sneaky

  • Purple coloration is a sign of strong light, not stress

  • Perfect for collectors who want a colorful cactus without a massive footprint

Dogs love these
Color: C) 2-Pack 2.5" Balls (Yellow)
Great quality balls for tough chewers. I love them, but wish the orange ones were available more...I've been checking cuz they are easier to find in the yard than the green that blends in. Our dogs love them and I like the weight for throwing.

Great quality and folding it in half is a plus. Fits under a seat in car/truck.
Purchased another, as we need one in each car. This is a great ball thrower, especially as it folds in a half. Makes it easy to store under a car/truck seat. Haven’t had any problem with it, great quality!

Fantastic throwing aid!
Very well made, great quality and doesn't feel cheap at all. It's thick, not flimsy or fragile so you can really swing it to launch a ball. Saves my body that I don't have to bend over to pick up the ball anymore, and saves my shoulder that I don't have to hurl the ball anymore. Another bonus is you don't have to touch a slobbered, soggy ball, or a ball covered in dirt. The foldable design is fantastic because I walk everywhere with my dog and don't want to carry around a long stick that's awkward to hold. This folds down small enough that I can securely put it in the back pocket of my jeans without worrying about it falling out. The thing I love most about it is there's a elastic loop at the end so when you fold it you can latch it securely. This small detail is outstanding because I can also hang it on the strap of my sling bag and with the loop secured it will not slip off the strap. This product is so well made and thought out overall.

Excellent toy for play
My dog would play all day if I threw the ball to him. He loves this even though he's 12. The scooped end allows you to pick up the ball without touching it. After a few runs it's covered in dog slobber. So that's a major plus for me! Also, some health issues affect my walking and bending at times. This helps with the bending. This is a great game to play with your favorite friend!

Your high-energy dog will love it!
Why did I wait so long to get one of these?!? I am the stereotypical throws-like-a-girl person, and my dog really needs to have an option that forces her to run far and fast. This is it. I can get that ball half a soccer field away at a minimum if I want. The ball is super bouncy, which adds an element of fun to her attempts to tame it and bring it back. Super worth the money (which wasn't much!). I've never had one of these before, so can't compare to the non-folding version. This one is easy to carry and fits in a drawer for storrage. No way you can fit it in a pocket, especially if you have a phone in one and dog treats in the other.
