Euphorbia abyssinica

Euphorbia abyssinica is a large, tree-forming succulent euphorbia with thick green stems, paired spines and a candelabra-like branching habit. In habitat it can become a substantial succulent tree, while in a pot it develops slowly into an upright, ribbed plant with water-storing stems.

The plant’s outline comes from succulent stem tissue that stores water and carries out photosynthesis through the green surface. Its visible shape is built by upright, angular, often dark green branches, with shallow teeth along the ribs and paired spines emerging from the spine shields. Short-lived leaves can appear near new growth during warm active periods, then drop as the plant continues through its leafless stem growth.

What stands out on Euphorbia abyssinica

  • Growth habit: Tree-like succulent euphorbia with a central woody base and upright branching stems as it matures.
  • Stem detail: Ribbed green branches store water and carry paired spines along the angles.
  • Seasonal leaves: Small leaves may appear on young growth during active periods and are naturally short-lived.
  • Container behaviour: Slow, vertical growth in pots, with height developing gradually under strong light.
  • Flowering: Mature plants may produce small yellowish cyathia, the specialised flower structure typical of Euphorbia.

Stem growth and northeast African dryland habitat

Euphorbia abyssinica is native from northeastern Sudan to Somalia, where it grows primarily in desert or dry shrubland. Its thick stems act as water-storage organs, and the green surface tissue can photosynthesise even when leaves are absent. These traits align with strong light, mineral drainage and dry intervals between thorough waterings.

Older plants develop a woody trunk-like base, while the green branches remain the active succulent parts of the plant. The ribs are more than a visual trait: they allow the stem to expand and contract slightly as stored water changes through wet and dry periods. In containers, this makes a stable pot, gritty substrate and careful handling more important than frequent repotting or heavy feeding.

Care for Euphorbia abyssinica

  • Light: Give very bright light with direct sun where the plant has been acclimated. Strong light keeps new stem growth firmer and better proportioned.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then let the substrate dry out before watering again. In cool, low-light periods, keep watering sparse.
  • Humidity and airflow: Average indoor humidity is enough. Good airflow around the stems lets damaged spots and old spine bases dry cleanly.
  • Substrate: Use a gritty cactus or succulent mix with a high mineral fraction such as pumice, lava grit, coarse sand or fine gravel.
  • Pot choice: Choose a pot with drainage holes and enough weight to balance the upright stems. A slightly snug pot lets the mix dry more predictably.
  • Repotting: Repot only when the plant is unstable, rootbound or sitting in tired substrate. Handle the root ball gently and keep the plant dry for a short period after repotting if roots or stems were damaged.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and frost-free. Avoid cold, wet substrate, especially during cool, low-light periods.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid high-nitrogen feeding that pushes soft, weak growth.
  • Growth rate: Growth is slow in containers, with height and branching developing gradually over several years.
  • Pruning: Prune only to remove damaged or unsafe growth. Wear gloves, protect your eyes and let cuts dry before the plant is watered again.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings can root after the cut surface has dried and callused, but the latex is irritating and cut material must be handled carefully.
  • Semi-hydroponics: Long-term culture in fully mineral or semi-hydro substrates can work only with a very airy setup, careful watering and excellent drying around the crown and stem base.
  • Placement: Place it where the stems have room and will not be brushed often, as spines, rib edges and fresh scars can be damaged by contact.
  • Handling: Move and rotate the plant carefully, as spines and rib edges can scar when stems knock against furniture, walls or other plants.

Problems to check on Euphorbia abyssinica

  • Soft base or dark patches: Usually points to excess moisture around the roots. Check drainage, stop watering until dry and inspect the base for rot.
  • Thin, stretched new growth: Often follows weak light. Move gradually into a brighter position so the stems adjust without scorch.
  • Corky scars on ribs: Often caused by physical knocks, old spine bases or previous stress. Check that the area is dry and firm.
  • Wet or spreading stem damage: Damaged tissue that stays damp can invite rot. Keep the area dry, improve airflow and remove softened tissue only with protected hands and clean tools.
  • Mealybugs, scale or spider mites: Look along ribs, spine shields and stem junctions. Remove early with a cotton bud and repeat checks weekly.
  • Wrinkled stems: Can come from normal dryness or root loss. Check substrate moisture first, then inspect roots if watering no longer restores firmness.

Latex and handling safety

Euphorbia abyssinica contains white latex sap that can irritate skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Wear gloves when pruning, repotting or cleaning damaged tissue, and keep the plant away from children and pets that may touch or chew the stems. If sap touches skin, wash it off promptly; if it reaches the eyes, rinse with clean water and seek medical advice.

Name origin and classification

Euphorbia abyssinica belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae and was first published by Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1791. The genus name Euphorbia is traditionally connected with Euphorbus, physician to King Juba II of Mauretania. The epithet abyssinica refers to Abyssinia, a historical name associated with Ethiopia and the wider region where this species occurs.

Over time, Euphorbia abyssinica builds a tall ribbed structure with paired spines and a clearly upright succulent-tree outline.

Luxuriously Soft and Packaged Like a High-End Brand
Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen, Color: 03 - Champagne, Size: Queen
I have never owned a 100% silk pillowcase before, especially not at this price point, so I am really glad I was able to experience this one. Even the packaging felt impressive. It was packaged like a luxury brand, which made the whole experience feel special before I even used it. I already had satin pillowcases and thought they were soft, but they do not compare to this mulberry silk pillowcase at all. This pillowcase feels incredibly soft, smooth, and luxurious. I had the satin pillowcases on some of my pillows and this silk one on another, and even in the dark when I turn over during the night, I can immediately tell which pillow has this silk pillowcase on it. The difference is that noticeable. It also has ample room, so you can use a full, fluffy pillow and it will still fit nicely inside the pillowcase. I love the added luxury of the zipper because it keeps the pillow from slipping out, but the zipper is hidden and does not affect the comfort at all. Honestly, this pillowcase put my old flattened pillow to shame. Now I feel like I need to get a new pillow immediately so the pillow can match the quality of the pillowcase. It feels so gentle and smooth against my face, and I love how cool it gets when the air conditioning hits it for a while. For nighttime hot flashes, that cool feeling is such a relief. I also really appreciate that I don't always have to sleep with a satin cap if I don't want to. I have locs, so protecting my hair from lint and dryness is important, but some nights you just want to be completely comfortable without wearing anything on your head. This pillowcase gives me that option while still being gentle on my hair. It also feels better for my skin compared to cotton and other materials because it doesn't seem to soak up all the natural oils from my face. I notice a difference. The only thing I would mention is that while it gives a nice cool feeling at first, it does absorb body heat fairly quickly and can warm up. Even with that, the softness and comfort more than make up for it. I didn't know what I was missing by not having real silk sheets, and now I really crave a full silk sheet and pillowcase set. If they feel anything like this pillowcase, I know that would be some of the best sleep ever. Overall, this pillowcase is soft, luxurious, comfortable, beautifully packaged, roomy, secure with the hidden zipper, and absolutely worth trying.

How do I know if this is ....
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen, Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: Queen
Mulberry Silk comes primarily from silkworms in China who eat white mulberry leaves, leaving a cocoon of spun silk that is used to weave fabric. With so many cheaper versions of mulberry silk, how do I know if this is the real deal? Well, I really do not know if this pillow fabric is 100% silkworm derived. It is not white so there had to be some level of dye added and that colorant is not listed. So, while I cannot confirm the fabric content, I can share how the pillow feels and functions. I have had silk and satin pillows and went back to cotton because organic cotton simply felt better on my face while sleeping. This pillow case is not like other silks, satin, or cotton. The fabric is smooth and soft - it's like sleeping on butter. I woke up this morning with less hair tangle and my face felt cuddled. I washed the pillow case before using it for the first time and the photo of this pillow case on my pillow (next to a red pillow) shows you how this pillow case looks right after being washed and fitted to a queen sized pillow. The only downside to this pillow case is extra care is needed with washing and drying. I washed the pillow case in a mesh bag in cold water and let it hang dry. It's probably not ideal fabric if you have oily skin or go to sleep with makeup because you cannot use harsh detergents to wash this pillow case and you cannot use fabric softener. I tend to wash the rest of my bedding on high heat and dry at high heat to reduce dust mites and other tiny creatures we cannot see on fabric. The zipper is good quality and easy to open and close - at this price point I would have expected a little better design to hide the metal zipper pull - added a photo to show how the metal zipper tab stops about 2 inches from the end of the pillow case with no "tuck-in" feature. The value of this pillow case seems to be fair for a high end product and it makes a nice gift. I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate buttery soft fabric. There are a ton of pillow cases that claim to be mulberry silk at a fraction of the cost of this pillow case - it's just so hard to know what is authentic and what is not so i can only speak to the fact that this pillow case feels good on my face and doesn't leave me with tangled hair. Hope the photos and the description of my experience with this pillow help you decide if this is the right pillow for you or a loved one. Here's to your comfort!

A tangible upgrade for hair care and sleep quality
Color: 02 - Silver Cloud, Size: King
I bought this a few weeks back to integrate into a more refined sleep setup, and it has easily met my expectations. It's a premium product that delivers on its promises. Material: You can immediately feel the difference in the 22 momme weight. It feels substantially thicker and more densely woven than typical "satin" substitutes, providing a smooth, glassy texture that feels truly high-end. Hair Protection: This is where it really shines. The frictionless surface has completely eliminated morning tangles and frizz. It allows hair to glide naturally, which is a massive relief if you are trying to preserve hair health or styles overnight. Comfort: It stays incredibly cool to the touch throughout the night. If you sleep hot, this naturally regulates temperature, meaning you never have to flip the pillow searching for the cold side. Appearance: The Silver Cloud color is elegant, and the fabric has a subtle, sophisticated luster. While it does arrive with some packaging creases, they smooth out with a careful press, leaving a very polished look on the bed. Fit: The King size accommodates larger, high-loft pillows perfectly without stretching. The hidden zipper is a great "zero-added-clicks" feature; it keeps the pillow locked in all night without any annoying slippage, though a slightly wider zipper opening would make insertion even easier. Quality: The stitching is tight, and the zipper operates smoothly. It holds up beautifully when hand-washed and air-dried. While $70 is an investment for a single case, the genuine 6A grade silk and OEKO-TEX certification make it a worthwhile piece of luxury.
