Voodoo Stonecrop (Sedum spurium 'Voodoo')

Voodoo Stonecrop is a tough, low-growing groundcover that delivers rich, dark foliage color and dependable coverage in sunny, well-drained sites. It spreads into a dense mat that helps fill gaps, soften edges, and keep beds looking finished with minimal maintenance. In summer, bright pink to reddish-pink flowers rise above the foliage and add a strong seasonal accent while supporting pollinators. Once established, it handles heat, lean soils, and short dry spells with ease.

Distinctive Features

This stonecrop forms creeping stems that root as they spread, creating a tight carpet of small, fleshy leaves. Foliage is typically deep burgundy to purple, often holding strong color in full sun and taking on even richer tones in cooler weather. Clusters of star-shaped, bright pink to reddish-pink flowers bloom in summer, providing a vivid contrast against the dark leaves. The combination of durable groundcover performance and high-contrast color makes it especially useful in rock gardens and modern, low-profile plantings.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun provides the best foliage color and flowering, with light shade tolerated but often less colorful.
  • Soil: Plant in well-drained soil, including sandy, gravelly, or rocky sites, and avoid consistently wet conditions.
  • Water: Water to establish, then provide dry to medium moisture, allowing soil to dry between waterings.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 9.
  • Mature Size: Typically grows 3 to 6 inches tall and spreads 12 to 18 inches wide.
  • Bloom Season: Blooms in summer, often from early to mid summer depending on climate.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use a broad patch as a low focal point where the dark foliage and bright summer flowers can pop against stone or lighter plantings.
  • Groundcover: Mass plant to form a dense mat that fills gaps and helps suppress weeds in sunny beds.
  • Rock Gardens: Tuck into rock and gravel gardens where sharp drainage and bold color contrast matter.
  • Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a crisp, low border with season-long color.
  • Slopes and Banks: Use on well-drained banks where spreading growth helps cover soil and handle drier conditions.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Shear lightly after flowering or in early spring to refresh growth and keep the mat dense.
  • Fertilizing: Avoid heavy feeding, because lean soils help maintain compact growth and better color.
  • Watering: Once established, water only during extended drought, because frequent irrigation can weaken stonecrop performance.
  • Drainage: Improve heavy soils with grit or plant in raised areas to keep crowns from staying wet.
  • Propagation: Expand plantings easily by dividing sections or re-rooting stem pieces in well-drained soil.

Why Choose Voodoo Stonecrop?

  • Dark Foliage Color: Burgundy to purple leaves provide bold contrast from spring through fall.
  • Summer Flowers: Bright pink blooms add vivid seasonal color and support pollinators.
  • Tough Groundcover: Spreading, rooting stems create reliable coverage in well-drained, sunny sites.
  • Waterwise Performance: Succulent growth handles heat and short dry spells well once established.
  • Lower Browsing Pressure: Deer and rabbits typically avoid the foliage in many landscapes.

Voodoo Stonecrop is an easy way to add durable coverage and high-contrast color to sunny, fast-draining areas. Pair it with silver foliage plants, blue-toned succulents, or ornamental grasses to make the dark leaves and bright flowers stand out. With sun and sharp drainage, it stays compact, resilient, and dependable year after year.

Great manners book for first grade.
Format: Board book
A fun book to read and teach proper manners for first grade students. It leaves open ended questions for the students to answer and learn.

Great Lesson for Age 2 and Up
This was our day care's Book of the Month, for children age 2-4 years old. They are all learning to use manners with their peers, at the table and when addressing adults. The lesson took a few readings for the children to understand the point, but once they understood what the various characters WEREN'T doing, therefore getting a negative response from Mr Panda, and what they SHOULD be doing to receive a positive response, the lesson stuck with them. If a child forgets his manners, a hint ("How would you ask Mr Panda?") has good results. This book, while a good story to read aloud, may need some additional explanation by the adult reader at first. Mr Panda offers his friends a treat, and who doesn't like donuts?! When each animal's response is rude or selfish, Mr Panda abruptly withdraws his offer and moves on to someone else. When the final offer is made to a friend who uses his manners, he gets ALL the donuts, because as Mr Panda remarks at the end, he doesn't like donuts anyway. I don't know if this sets up unrealistic expectations, but it's a good lesson presented in an entertaining way.

Loved by all
Format: Board book
Both of my daughters have loved this book. I bought it initially for my 12 year old (as a toddler) and she adored the different animals voices I would do. Bought it again for my 18 month old and she just giggles and giggles.
