Coffea arabica

Coffea arabica is an evergreen coffee plant grown as a glossy foliage shrub, with opposite dark green leaves, a naturally upright habit and neat side branching. Young plants form a compact leafy column, while older potted specimens can develop a small shrub-like outline with horizontal side branches. Under bright, warm conditions, mature plants may produce fragrant white flowers followed by coffee cherries.

The species is native to north-east tropical Africa, including south-west Ethiopia and neighbouring regions, and has been cultivated for centuries for its seeds. In the wild and in cultivation it grows as a shrub or small tree, often in bright filtered conditions with steady moisture and rich, well-drained soil. Indoors, Coffea arabica develops glossy leaves and tidy branching; flowering and fruiting depend on age, light and mature shoot development.

Coffea arabica main features

  • Evergreen tropical shrub with glossy, elliptical, dark green leaves
  • Opposite leaf pairs and a tidy upright-to-branching habit
  • Fragrant white flowers possible on mature, well-grown plants
  • Red coffee cherries may form after flowering under suitable conditions
  • Best grown with bright filtered light, warmth and evenly moist substrate

Coffea arabica growth and origin

Coffea arabica belongs to the Rubiaceae, a family that includes many tropical shrubs with opposite leaves and interpetiolar stipules. Its leaves are glossy, slightly wavy along the margins and held in pairs along the stems. In a pot, pruning encourages side shoots and helps the plant develop into a fuller shrub.

As a crop plant, Coffea arabica is often pruned to a harvestable height, but its natural habit is that of a shrub or small tree. The flowers are white, star-shaped and fragrant, appearing from the leaf axils on mature plants. The fruit ripens from green through yellowish or red tones, with the seeds inside becoming the coffee beans after processing and roasting.

Coffea arabica care indoors

  • Light: Give bright filtered light or a bright window with gentle morning or evening sun. Strong midday sun behind glass can mark the leaves.
  • Watering: Keep the substrate evenly moist during active growth, allowing the surface to begin drying before watering again. Coffea arabica needs steady moisture with air around the roots.
  • Substrate: Use a rich but free-draining mix with fine bark, compost and mineral aeration. A slightly acidic to neutral mix suits its growth well.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and stable, ideally 18–26 °C. Leaf drop can follow cold nights, draughts or sudden temperature shifts.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity reduces dry edges on expanding leaves. Pair humidity with airflow to reduce pest pressure.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly and regularly during spring and summer with a balanced fertiliser. Reduce feeding during darker months.
  • Pruning: Pinch or trim leggy tips to build a fuller shrub. Older plants can be shaped after active growth resumes.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot and watering becomes hard to regulate. Refresh the mix before it compacts around the root system.
  • Outdoor summer placement: A sheltered, bright shaded outdoor position can suit established plants in warm weather; acclimate gradually and bring indoors before cool nights.

Coffea arabica troubleshooting

  • Brown leaf edges: Check for dry root episodes, low humidity, salt build-up or direct sun through glass.
  • Yellow leaves: Review drainage, watering frequency and winter light. A saturated root zone in low light quickly stresses the plant.
  • Leaf drop: Look for cold draughts, sudden relocation, dry root balls or pest activity.
  • Absent flowering: Mature plants need bright filtered light, warmth and steady growth before flowers form; young plants usually stay in foliage growth.
  • Scale, mealybugs, thrips or mites: Inspect the leaf undersides, stem nodes and new growth, then clean and treat early.

Coffea arabica toxicity and safety

Coffea arabica produces caffeine-containing seeds inside its fruit, and caffeine is unsafe for dogs and cats. Keep the plant away from pets and children that may chew leaves, stems or berries, especially if fruits develop on a mature plant.

Coffea arabica etymology and botanical background

Coffea is commonly linked to Arabic kahwah, meaning beverage. The epithet arabica means of Arabia, reflecting the historic route through which the plant became known to European botany. Coffea arabica L. was published by Linnaeus in Species Plantarum in 1753 and is an accepted species in the Rubiaceae.

Reliable scale, great for starting on a budget while still getting fairly solid results
This scale performs wonderfully and is very reliable. I will say the only issue I am having is that it seems to be very very touchy with not getting an exact weight reading and flickers a lot. I don't think this is really an issue as it might just be super sensitive. But for the price it's absolutely worth it

You Don't Really Need This, But...
This combination coffee scale and timer works exactly as advertised. It measures weights up to 2000 grams with 1/10 gram accuracy. The scale has three operating modes: espresso, pour over and manual. In espresso mode, the scale will automatically tare after a cup is placed on it then automatically start the count up timer and weigh incoming espresso as it starts to pour. In pour over mode, it will automatically tare after your cup/dripper/filter is in place. Then it weighs out the coffee dose as you add it. After you tare again manually, the timer and scale will start as you pour hot water. This allows you to let the saturated coffee grounds off gas for the desired number of seconds before continuing the pour. Manual mode is just that. You control the tare function and start the timer yourself. Battery capacity is great so USB charging will be infrequently required. Accessories include a short USB-A to USB-C cord and a clip-on silicone heat shield to protect the scale from hot espresso. Coffee spills are easy to cleanup and don't seem to have any ill effects on the scale itself. One gripe though: the weighing platform is only about 10 cm square so anything larger than a small coffee cup will block part of the digital displays. After all, the scale needs to fit inside an espresso machine. It isn't a full size kitchen scale. But really, do you need this device? If you want to be ultra precise in your coffee measurements, you love gadgets, or you revel in the coffee making ritual, the answer is certainly YES!

Scale programming and stabilizing
It took me a little time to figure out the different programming modes but now I know how to get quickly to the program I need for the coffee I brew. The scale is very sensitive and it takes a second until the scale stabilizes. All in all, I like it.

Precise, with super focused controls.
Color me impressed. I wanted to upgrade from an old Oster brand scale. It was a workhorse, and I still use it, but I prefer this Maestri House scale for coffee and tea. I compared them side-by-side, and their measurements are near identical. I've abused my old one, so I would imagine the M H to be more reliably calibrated, although the differences in readings while set to Grams was .01, so, for me, inconsequential, and may well have been user error as I had no control to measure them against. Here's what I like and prefer about the Maestri House S1: I love that it is rechargeable with readily available USB-C cords. I can take it with me, and not have to worry about swapping batteries. I love the silicone band that protects the platform. It is easy to clean, and doesn't seem to interfere with measurements. The scale is very sensitive. I could add or remove a literal pinch of ground coffee and it would register on the scale. The digital readout is bright enough to easily see. The controls could not be simpler: tap once to Tare, twice to change the unit of measurement. You can set it to liquid or dry ingredients as well. I also love that I can switch between grams and ounces without having to remeasure. Most scales do that these days, but I appreciate it. The timer is simple and easy to control--a very nice inclusion. Also, since the buttons are VERY sensitive, I barely have to touch them, so the scale stays perfectly still, and they work with wet hands. This device is focused, designed to be especially effective for making coffee or tea. It is compact, which makes it the perfect size for cups, mugs, filter baskets, etc. I wouldn't use it for baking or other kitchen tasks. Ok, I WOULD try to use it for that--I just wouldn't recommend it. It's too small for bowls and trays, because it wasn't designed for those. It is PERFECT for brewing and drink mixology. Also, I prefer to keep scales like these designated to weights under 5 pounds--let the Oster handle the big stuff. Overall, I think it's a fantastic little scale. I have had no reliability issues. Will it hold up over time? I think so. Plus, it looks great in my coffee corner. Satin black is kind of my theme. Happy brewing!
