Philodendron selloum , also called Philodendron bipinnatifidum or Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum , is a spectacular houseplant, appreciated for its large, deeply cut, and lush foliage. Its majestic habit and exotic foliage add an elegant tropical touch to any indoor space.
Origin: This species is native to South America, particularly Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, where it grows in undergrowth in humid tropical environments.
Growth: Philodendron selloum is a moderate to fast grower and can reach 1 to 2 meters in height and spread indoors. Its large, glossy, dark green leaves, cut into deep lobes, give the plant an imposing and decorative appearance.
Flowers: Rarely produces flowers in indoor cultivation. In its natural habitat, it develops a creamy-white spathe-like inflorescence surrounding a spadix.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Moderate light is tolerated, but too little light will slow growth. Avoid intense direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
Watering: Requires moderate watering. Allow the surface of the soil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid excess moisture, which could cause root rot.
Substrate: Use a well-draining potting soil rich in organic matter. A mix of houseplant potting soil with perlite and a little bark is ideal for ensuring good drainage.
Toxicity: Philodendron selloum is toxic if ingested due to the presence of calcium oxalates. It is advisable to keep it out of reach of pets and children.
