Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman'

Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman' is a silver-green Chinese evergreen with large elliptic leaves and a full, clumping habit. Mature blades show a cool glaucous surface framed by darker green margins.

New leaves open from yellow-green petioles and mature into wider blades with darker mottling, streaks and spots near the margins and midrib. In a pot, the plant builds density through suckering growth, with older stems and fresh shoots forming an upright-spreading Aglaonema.

Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman' silver leaf structure

  • Leaf form: Large elliptic leaves create a substantial outline in the pot.
  • Surface colour: Mature leaves show a silver-green to glaucous upper surface with darker green margins.
  • Pattern detail: Darker blotches, spots and streaks can appear near the leaf edge and along the midrib.
  • Petioles: Yellow-green petioles remain visible between the lower leaves.
  • Growth habit: Suckering stems create a fuller pot over time, with multiple growth points at the base.
  • Plant structure: Firm petioles hold the leaves outward and give the clump an upright-spreading profile.

How Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman' fills its pot

Held on sturdy petioles, the leaves display the silver centre and darker margins clearly. The older blades form the outer part of the plant while fresh shoots add density from the base.

As basal shoots develop, the pot gradually fills with overlapping leaves. A slightly wider pot gives the clump room to expand, while an airy substrate keeps moisture from sitting too long around the central root zone.

Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman' indoor care

  • Light: Place it in bright filtered to medium indirect light. Direct sun can mark the silver-green leaf surface.
  • Water: Water when the upper layer of substrate has started to dry. The roots need moisture, but saturated soil can soften stems and yellow lower leaves.
  • Substrate: Use an airy, moisture-retentive mix with enough structure for oxygen around the roots.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm and stable. Cold, wet substrate can damage roots and slow new growth.
  • Humidity: Average to moderately higher indoor humidity is suitable. Very dry air can crisp leaf tips on large leaves.
  • Leaf care: Wipe dust from the smooth leaf surface so the silver pattern stays visible.

Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman' troubleshooting cues

  • Yellow lower leaves: Check watering first, especially if the substrate stays wet deep in the pot.
  • Soft stems: Cold conditions or saturated roots can weaken the base of the plant.
  • Scorched patches: Harsh direct sun can leave brown marks on silver and pale green sections.
  • Brown tips: Dry air, mineral buildup or uneven watering can show first along the leaf edges.
  • Slow new growth: Low temperatures or a cold root zone can pause growth even when the plant still looks firm.

Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman' safety

Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman' contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and small children, and wash your hands after handling damaged leaves or stems if your skin is sensitive.

Aglaonema 'B.J. Freeman' botanical note

Aglaonema belongs to Araceae, the arum family, and is widely grown as Chinese evergreen. The genus name combines Greek roots for bright or clear and thread, referring to the stamens in its floral structure.

Living History.
Format: Hardcover
I’m a Republican who met Jim Clyburn in a very non-political environment: a golf course. Politics aside, he’s an absolute legend. He’s a living history book. This book is a look back on history where politicians worked for you, not their party.

Engaging and Relevant to our Times
Format: Kindle
These days more than ever this work is important. Rep. Clyburn's engaging prose is both personal and matter-of-fact, and provides much needed perspective on an often-neglected but most important part of our history.

Format: Paperback
We finished the Wonderland yesterday- this book was instrumental in planning and is highly recommended. In a somewhat bullet format I'll add a few notes... I think it is better to deliver your food caches rather than mail them- discuss with the rangers THE ACTUAL PICK-UP POINTS, and have your map with you- they will give you current trail and water conditions, this proved to be very valuable. We opted for a 12 day hike, after just a few days we realized that we had underestimated our hiking ability and changed out schedule to a 9 day hike. The rangers were very good about helping us with the changes, keep a slower plan and a faster plan in mind as the hike progresses (don't forget to get word to the rangers to re-date your food caches if you change your schedule). Thank those rangers and back country guys when you see them-the trail is in splendid condition, the maintenance is ongoing. When you meet a man wearing a pack-board with a 55 gallon drum lashed to it and he is going to muck out one of the outhouses on the trail is really makes you think about all the steps that you are traversing, the water bars, the brush...on and on with the list. Trail-trash... and I'm not talking about litter, there are some not so nice people on the trail who think nothing about leapfrogging a campsite because they "didn't like it" or the day was too long / short. That means that if you are a late arrival at a camp all the sites may be taken, then you have to ask to see permits and engage in eviction, the rangers need to hear about these guys and they leave the park "With extra paperwork:". One party we met started as a party of 3, but one of them became ill and suffered a fall resulting in an injury- so she was abandoned at Golden Lakes to fend for herself... dumped on the rangers. Point being, know your trail team- when you look at the map note where the roads are close by the trail should you need to get help. The authors mention bugs... perhaps once or twice... they talk about deer flies and horse flies... but as much as they talk about it is still under emphasized, there are legions, hordes, armies of bugs at some of the campsites DON'T IGNORE THESE WARNINGS. There was a great tip about putting apples / oranges / pears in your food caches- after a couple of days without fresh fruit these were a huge bonus. We also included some of the Hormel dinners- already hydrated and a nice break from the normal trail food. All in all, this is essential equipment in planning your hike. The Wonderland is aptly named- this one of the high churches in the outdoor religion, you will be constantly amazed!!
