Split Leaf Philodendrons are an iconic houseplant. Having been grown indoors for centuries, Split leaf philodendrons are a proven performer for indoor climates. Known for growing in easy to grow, moderate light environments, regardless of humidity levels. Split Leafs grow stunning leafs, that once mature, can grow to be 3' across at the widest point on the leaf. Easily Propagated, this houseplant is a great candidate for spreading the houseplant love to your neighbors.

Sizing

Split Leaf Philodendron work best as a floor plant or a small plant stand plant. They would not work well hanging but, instead are used as a floor plant with a trellis or moss pole for the Philodendron to climb and cling to. Grown in its native environment, Split leaf Philodendrons can grow to be 30' Tall, grow parasitically on the trunk of trees and fallen old growth, and can develop foliage spreading over 3' wide. Grown indoors though, you can expect your Split Leaf Philodendron to comfortably reach 6' in height with mature leaves reaching 2 1/2' wide. 

 

Care 

Philodendrons are a parasitic epiphyte similar to Pothos and Hoya. Meaning they prefer to grow air roots and wrap themselves around dead fall, Trees, branches and rock walls in humid environments. Understanding their native environment is important when learning how to care for these indoors. They are considered an easy plant to grow, great for beginners and are very rewarding with fast, vigorous new growth. Split leaf Philodendrons like having higher humidity, and around 3 hours of direct sunlight in a day. If your space does not allow that, consider using a small grow light in a lamp. Hardly any room will be too bright for a split leaf, but they can not handle more than 6 hours of direct sunlight in a day. Spraying the plant with a mist bottle or keeping it near a humidifier is a great way to encourage large healthy leaves and a healthy air root system. Using Leaf Shine to keep your leaves dust free and water spot free will improve the presence of the plant in the room. 

 

Fertilizer

Using Schultz all purpose Houseplant food systemically every watering - every other watering is a great way to encourage rapid growth in the short Canadian grow season. Many growers use an additional epiphyte fertilizer to encourage large leaves and healthy air roots.

Why wasn’t MacArthur court martialed?

If there is a better book about overcoming the impossible, please send the title. Leadership at every level except the very top as well as the esprit de corps of USMC carried the day against overwhelming numbers of Chinese armies ( yes, armies - hundreds of thousand against USA and USMC troops). The Korean War doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Emperor MacArthur sat on his butt in Tokyo refusing to believe he could be wrong while Chinese armies crossed the Yalu intent on destroying the 1st MARDIV and the USA units east of the Chosin Reservoir. He spent one night in Korea during the entire war until President Truman fired his ass and rightly so.

This should be a required reference when studying the battle to understand lessons learned. So often books on this campaign are fragmented. In this book, he put the exciting descriptions of the action in the context of the broader campaign. I really appreciated how he included Task Force McLean/Faith which often gets omitted. After reading a number of books on this battle, I knew what was going to happen, but have to admit that it was hard to put this book down. HIGHLY highly recommended.

Both Mao Tse-Tung and the commander of the 10's of 1,000's of Chinese "volunteers" who tried to surround and annihilate the 1st Marine Division at Chosin acknowledged that the 1sdtMarDiv was the best division in the American Armed Forces. And the Marines there proved they were correct in that assumption! I am proud to have served in that very division as a peacetime Marine, 1956 - '58.

There are warriors for justice, warriors for oppression, realists, capitulators, power brokers, and pawns. Even the best, who are not depleted of passionate intensity for doing right, must contend with an ecosystem of others’ dreams and aspirations, which all too often run afoul of the righteous. In the end, we may be judged by others and by ourselves for what we’ve wished for: either peace and fairness or war and acquisition at any price. The book serves as a reminder to plant the right seeds and dream the right dreams…for everybody’s children. Because when the harshest frost melts away, something new will grow.
