Portulacaria Jade Plant (Portulacaria afra) – Dwarf Jade for Australian Gardens

The Portulacaria Jade Plant (Portulacaria afra) - commonly known as Dwarf Jade, Elephant Bush, Mini Jade, or Portulacaria Jade - is one of the most reliable and adaptable succulents for Australian homes and gardens. Loved for its small, glossy green leaves, reddish woody stems, and naturally compact growth habit, this hardy plant suits indoor displays, outdoor pots, and low-maintenance landscapes with ease.

Unlike the traditional Crassula Jade, Portulacaria afra is a distinct species valued for its faster growth, superior drought tolerance, and dense, bushy structure. It is widely used for bonsai, rock gardens, patio containers, and modern indoor styling, making it one of the most versatile succulents available to Australian gardeners.

Well suited to Australian conditions, this plant performs exceptionally well in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia, thriving in warm, dry climates and adapting easily to a range of growing environments. Its ability to tolerate bright sun, minimal watering, and light cold (with frost protection) makes it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Key Characteristics:

  • Botanical Name: Portulacaria afra
  • Common Names: Dwarf Jade Plant, Elephant Bush
  • Growth Habit: Bushy and upright, can be pruned for bonsai or left to trail
  • Leaves: Small, round, glossy green
  • Stems: Reddish-brown and flexible
  • Flowers: Tiny pink or white flowers may appear in mature plants under ideal conditions

Care Instructions:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or full sun. Grows well indoors with sufficient light.
  • Watering: Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water less frequently in winter.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil. A cactus or succulent mix works well.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions. Keep above 10°C and protect from frost.

The first photo serves a display purpose only. The succulent plant housed in the red pot comes in a 190mm diameter container. While the image provides a representative depiction of what you will receive, but may vary slightly because no two succulents are the same.

Our dogs hurt their mouths chewing these bones
Color: Purple & Blue
I don't do a lot of reviews because I realize many are objective opinions. However, in this case I felt it was necessary to warn others. Our dogs are aggressive chewers. Their last rubber bones (not these) which we've purchased before, and recently purchased again, were destroyed quickly. Chunks of rubber came off the ends. Since those didn't hold up like they used to, I found these harder bones hoping they would last longer. They were able to gnaw into the hard plastic within a few minutes. This created sharp edges that cut their mouths. When I saw a bit of blood on the bones, I took them away from the dogs and threw them away. I wondered why they quit chewing on them after being so excited at first. Also, these are hard enough to damage a tooth.
