Are you lookingfor the perfect indoor succulent for any room? Then the stunning panda plant, known as Kalanchoe tomentosa, is your answer. This lovely furry succulent plant is native to Madagascar and is a member of the well-known Kalanchoe genus. It gets its name from the fuzzy, silvery leaves that resemble the fur of a panda. This Panda plant has a unique appearance with its thick, oval-shaped leaves that are covered in tiny fine hairs, giving it a soft and fuzzy texture. It's like petting a panda!

The Kalanchoe tomentosa is sometimes referred to as the "Chocolate Soldier" due to the brownish-red markings on the edges of its leaves. It's like having a soldier made of chocolate! However, it's important to note that "Chocolate Soldier" is also the name of another cultivar of Kalanchoe tomentosa that has a more pronounced chocolatey coloration throughout its leaves. It has several other common names, such as pussy ears, cat ears, donkey ears, and plush plants.

When fully grown, this slow-growing kalanchoe tomentosa can reach heights of up to 2 feet and has a robust, thick stem that develops branches and several grey-green leafy clusters. When properly pruned, they can produce branches that extend below the level of the pot, and so they are great for growing in a hanging basket. It grows in a compact and bushy shrub-like growth habit, making it a perfect addition to your indoor garden or as a charming decoration on your desk.

The flowers of Kalanchoe tomentosa only bloom in their natural habitat with small yellow-green tubular-shaped flowers in spring and summer.

Additionally, you can propagate your panda plants by leaf cuttings and stem cuttings. These summer dormant plants are mildly toxic for pets and humans if consumed, so keep these panda plants away from children.

Overall, the Panda Plants are delightful succulents to have in your collection. Its unique appearance and easy-care requirements make it a popular choice among succulent enthusiasts. So, if you're looking for cute and low-maintenance house plants, these Panda Plants are definitely worth considering! Read on to discover how to grow a panda plant indoors or outdoors.

Watering Needs

The watering needs of the Panda Plants are similar to other succulent plants. These Kalanchoe plants have adapted to survive in arid environments, so they don't require frequent watering. To avoid root rot, allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

When watering your indoor Panda Plant, make sure to give it a thorough soak, allowing the water to fully penetrate the soil. Then, wait until the top inch or so of the soil is completely dry before watering again. The kalanchoe tomentosa still survive even if you neglect to water them for a week or two. However, this does not imply that they can be neglected.

Remember, it's always better to underwater than overwater your kalanchoe succulents. They are more drought tolerant than they are of excessive moisture. So, be patient and let your Panda Plant enjoy a little dry spell between drinks!

Light Requirement

The Kalanchoe tomentosa loves basking in bright light. It thrives in bright indirect sunlight, so placing it several feet away from a sunny south-facing window or in a well-lit area is ideal.

However, be cautious about exposing your Panda Plant to direct sunlight for extended periods, especially during the hottest parts of the day. This can cause sunburn on its furry leaves. If you notice the leaves turning brown or developing spots, it may be a sign of too much sun exposure. Providing some shade or diffusing enough light with a sheer curtain can help protect your Kalanchoe tomentosa.

Remember, finding the right balance is key! Aim for bright, indirect light to keep your Panda Plant happy and healthy. It'll appreciate the sunshine without getting too much of a tan!

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

When it comes to soil and fertilizer needs for your Kalanchoe tomentosa Panda Plant, it's important to provide it with well-draining soil. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has specialized succulent potting soil that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your Kalanchoe succulents thrive. As an okay alternative, you can create your own succulent potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

As for fertilizer, the Panda Plant doesn't require a lot of feeding. During the growing season, which is typically spring, you can use a balanced NPK diluted fertilizer once a year. Apply it once a month or as directed on the fertilizer packaging.

Remember, less is more when it comes to fertilizer for your Panda Plant. It's better to under-fertilize than over-fertilize, as excessive nutrients can cause damage. With the right soil succulent mix and a light touch of fertilizer, your Kalanchoe tomentosa will thrive and show off its adorable leaves!

Hardiness Zone & More

Native to Madagascar, the Kalanchoe tomentosa is typically grown as a houseplant in many regions. In terms of hardiness zones, it is generally recommended to grow Panda plants indoors in USDA zones 10-11, which have mild to warm temperatures year-round.

When it comes to temperature, the Panda Plant prefers a range of 65-75°F (18-24°C) during the day and slightly cooler temperatures at night. It can tolerate slightly higher temperatures, but be cautious of extreme heat, as it can cause stress to the plant. As for humidity, the Panda Plant is adaptable and can handle average indoor humidity levels. It doesn't require any specific humidity requirements.

Remember, it's always a good idea to monitor the temperature and humidity levels in your specific location and adjust accordingly to provide the best growing conditions for your Panda Plant. With the right climate, you can grow Panda Plants indoors for healthy growth.

Great Sunscreen at a Great Price!
Style: SPF 50, Size: 8 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Love this sunscreen. I live in FL and like to walk most mornings, and need a good sunblock. This Amazon Basics is far better than my previous, far more expensive brand. It's a great price for great quality. I've been using it on my body & face, it's non-greasy, absorbs well, and really seems to offer very good sun protection. And I really appreciate the next day shipping on my past two orders, Amazon. Thanks for the great product & great service!

Just ok - too thick to apply evenly
Style: SPF 50, Size: 8 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Just ok - very thick, so difficult to apply evenly. I use this for outdoor cycling and it works, but it's so thick that it tends to clump instead of smoothly covering the skin.

Best Moisturizer & Clears ECZEMA FAST! TIPS & BONUS USES
Size: 11 Ounce (Pack of 1)
After wasting money on many supermarket and expensive brands, this is the only one that really works! I don't have eczema, but another friend does, who first told me about this product. I do have dry skin, though, whenever I over wash my hands due to chores, repairs or taking care of family, and the dry indoor heat or coldness of winter weather. My friend with eczema swears by this. She's tried other brands and even prescriptions, which have side effects (steroids thin the skin and is bad for your immunity). When her skin had cracks or is itchy, she applies it, and it heals up within a few days. She uses it also as maintenance daily, to prevent future outbreaks or skin cracking. There's the regular "Aveeno Eczema Therapy" in a tube, but it stings at first if you have any cracks in the skin, which subsides after a few minutes, but it works faster with sealing up cracks. I love this product because it's very rich, but not too greasy. It doesn't sting if you have skin cracks, and is gentler and still works well, but it takes a little bit longer. It's even more effective than the regular "Aveeno Baby Eczema Care" creme in a tube. I prefer jars because there's always some product left in a tube. You can't squeeze out what's left at the bottom, and have to cut the tube apart to get at it. AMAZON HAS THE BEST PRICE, that I've seen online or off. It's also available in the Baby Section only at stores like supermarkets, pharmacies, etc., but this is the lowest price. SUBSCRIBE, and you can save even more. DO NOT BUY ANY GENERICS! They don't work! I've tried buying them, since it looked like they had the same ingredients, and costs less, but they are simply not efficacious. USE WATER TO KEEP MOISTURE IN: Surprisingly enough, it's not the moisturizer per se that keeps your skin hydrated, it's water. For example, think of a grape (full, plump with water, juicy), versus a prune (a dried out grape). Moisturizer provides a physical barrier to keep your skin hydrated. Of course, a moisturizer's ingredients can also make it a superior or inferior product. The Aveeno Eczema line has colloidal oatmeal, which is soothing, and healing to the skin. HOW TO USE WATER WITH MOISTURIZER: Wet the application areas with water first (I run my hands lightly under the tap), so the product will absorb faster (water hydrates when mixed with moisturizer), and it won't be greasy. Your skin will feel non-greasy, and not wet within a few minutes. Use a paper towel or tissues to lightly wipe off the excess, and you can use your hands right away. I find that this method keeps my skin hydrated more effectively and longer. YOU'LL USE LESS CREAM WITH WATER: I use only a tablespoon size, and spread it all over my hands, and along my forearms and elbows. Water thins and spreads out the cream more easily. You can use it on DRY, CRACKED FEET, too. Apply it throughout the day after you wash your hands and before bed, and you'll never get dry skin or eczema outbreaks again! (Per me and my circle of friends). BUY SEVERAL JARS, and scatter around them the house, like the bathrooms, kitchen, work areas, etc. BONUS USES: 1. INSECT BITES: A friend reported that it even works in a pinch to help alleviate bug bites that she's gotten (fleas from animal rescue, mosquitoes, etc). Wash the area or use an alcoholic sanitizer or baby wipes to clean the bite area first. Then spread on Aveeno, if you don't have an antihistamine topical product handy. ALOE VERA GEL FROM THE PLANT also has miraculous healing powers with insect bites, burns, skin rashes, etc. You just cut a small piece at an angle, open it up with scissors along the leaf's seam, and apply the gel. You can wrap a bandage or strip of clean cloth lightly over the area to keep the gel in place, if you want. The cut plant area will close by itself within a day. Aloe vera is sold cheap at supermarkets, nurseries, etc., at under $10. The gel feels cool and soothing to the skin. The plant is superior to any packaged product. DO NOT SCRATCH THE ITCH! IF YOU IGNORE IT, IT'LL DISAPPEAR by itself within a few hours. Trust me, it really works with mosquito bites. I used to itch for days, until I stopped scratching it. Distract yourself by watching tv, reading or using your cell to ignore the itch, and just lightly apply your best anti-itch remedy (DO NOT RUB or you'll stimulate the histamines from the bite). Anytime that you're tempted to scratch, apply your remedy instead. THE BEST THINGS TO STOP ITCHING FAST (In order of effectiveness) are: 1) Anti-histamine topical product 2) Aloe vera gel from the plant (also heals the skin) 3) Aveeno creme (also heals the skin) 4) Alcoholic rub 2. SKIN RASHES: A friend of mine said she was by herself with the baby one day, stuck with no car and husband away, when the diaper creme had run out in the evening. She applied Aveeno several times, and the rash disappeared the next morning. Another friend used Aveeno for a strange rash that showed up on her arm when she accidentally brushed against some plants when hiking, and it disappeared within a few hours. She washed the area first, then applied the cream. Of course, it's best to use a product designed for rashes, especially for babies. And get any mysterious rash checked out by a doctor. Btw, I don't get compensated for any of my reviews. I wanted to give a recommendation for a fantastic moisturizer that I've been using for several years.
