Eucalyptus Plant Care

In 2025 people are thinking about their health more than ever. Natural remedies and plants often get talked about, and Eucalyptus is always popular. Here is our complete guide to caring for this plant, and how to use it.

Sunlight

Eucalyptus plants prefer areas that receive 8 to 10 hours of full bright sun. If your eucalyptus is indoors, place it near a south-facing window so that it gets plenty of sunlight. If your eucalyptus is in your garden, be sure the soil drains very well. Likewise, if you're planting eucalyptus in a pot, use high-quality potting soil and a pot that has drainage holes to let out excess water.

Water

Water eucalyptus plant regularly. Eucalyptus plants are only partially drought-tolerant once their roots are established. Water regularly to prevent their leaves from drooping and falling off. If your Eucalyptus is outdoors, place a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture.

Humidity

They like any environment. Average household humidity will do just fine

Fertilizer: Fertilize your houseplants! Outdoor eucalyptus rarely needs fertilizer, but your indoor eucalyptus can benefit from liquid fertilizer every few weeks during the spring.

Upkeep: Prune eucalyptus plants as you see fit. The best way to keep that growth in check, and keep the plant healthy, is to regularly prune and shape it.

Eucalyptus Plant Information

Eucalyptus is a member of the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. The majority of eucalyptus species come from Australia, while a few other species are native to Philippines and Malaysia.

Eucalyptus has always been used for decoration, woodworking, and very popular for medicines. It is known for its menthol-like fragrance, which comes from essential oils that are present in all parts of the plant.

Most species of this plant lose their leaves in the cold or dry seasons.

Eucalyptus Benefits and Uses

Most people will recognize the scent of eucalyptus, but many don’t realize that this evergreen tree also has a wide variety of uses. Humans and Koala bears tend to use this plant most often, and in different ways.

Eucalyptus oils and essential extracts are commonly found in over-the-counter drugs, and other forms of medicines. Concentrated eucalyptus oil can be toxic when consumed, so please keep it away from pets and children.

Using Eucalyptus in the Shower

Hanging eucalyptus in the shower allows you to breathe in the deep, minty aroma as it mixes with the steam. It is a distinct scent that releases your stress and helps you wind down.

It is common that people elevate their shower experience by hanging a bundle of eucalyptus stems from their shower head. Eucalyptus has shown to help with upper respiratory issues, which is why Eucalyptus essential oil is often an active ingredient in over-the-counter chest rubs and used with humidifiers.

Hanging eucalyptus in the shower allows the steam the release essential oils in the eucalyptus plant, which can aid in relieving congestion and inflammation related to sinus and bronchial infections.

Planting Eucalyptus

When planting eucalyptus in Canada or the USA, choose a cold-hardy variety. Select a sunny location with well-draining soil, as eucalyptus plants prefer drier conditions and don't tolerate waterlogged soil.

Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball, and loosen the surrounding soil to promote root growth. Place the plant in the hole with the root ball at soil level, backfill, and water thoroughly.

Water regularly during the first season, but avoid overwatering. Consider growing eucalyptus in pots so they can be moved indoors during harsh winters.

Common Issues With Eucalyptus Plants

Eucalyptus tree remain relatively healthy when in their preferred environment, which admittedly is hard to replicate in Canada. In suboptimal conditions they can start to show certain issues. If caught early, there is no worry.

Leaves turning brown on a eucalyptus plant is usually a sign of too little moisture in the soil. Eucalyptus plants enjoy a lot of water, and a lot of sun.

Brown leaves is likely the issue if your leaves are curling or dropping. In this case, supply your plant with more water, and keep the soil moist but not soggy.

Is a Eucalyptus Plant Safe for Cats?

Eucalyptus plants are not pet friendly. Most pets will start to nibble and experience mouth irritation and stop. This is the same for eucalyptus plants and dogs as well. If your pet continues to eat the plant they will feel nauseous and possibly start to vomit.

We recommend that all plants be kept away from pets and children. Other than eating plants, kids and pets can knock them over, so please keep them high up, and away from issues.

Where To Buy Eucalyptus Plants?

Feels like a real upgrade, but maybe priced a little high
Color: Stainless Steel
This is one of those things you don’t think much about until you switch to a better one. Right away you notice the weight. It actually stays put when you pull a sheet instead of sliding all over the counter or tipping up, which already makes it better than most cheap holders. The spring arm does help keep the roll under control so you’re not pulling half the roll by accident. One handed use works most of the time, but it depends on the paper towels. Thinner rolls tear clean without any effort. Thicker ones can still need a second hand here and there, so it’s not perfect but still better than a basic stand. Build quality feels solid. The finish looks clean and not cheap, and it wipes down easily. It definitely looks like something you’d keep out on the counter instead of hiding. Only real downside is the price. It does what it’s supposed to do and does it well, but it’s still a paper towel holder at the end of the day. You’re paying for the weight and design more than anything. If you’re tired of flimsy ones, this is a noticeable step up. Just depends if you care enough to spend extra on something this simple.

Sleek Kitchen Essential One Handed Paper Towel Dispenser
Color: Black, Color: Black
The Ultrean paper towel holder is a countertop accessory designed for convenience featuring a sturdy stainless steel construction that wipes clean easily and blends into any kitchen or bathroom decor. It stands upright on a weighted non slip base that provides stability during use and it is equipped with a spring loaded arm intended to assist with one handed tearing. The assembly is very straightforward making it quick to set up right out of the box so you can start using it immediately for your daily cleaning tasks. I found this holder very easy to put together and integrate into my space and it definitely adds a nice modern touch to my kitchen counters. While it is marketed as a one handed tear dispenser I have noticed that it depends on the type of paper towels you are using. If I am using thinner cheaper rolls the tear is effortless but with my preferred thick Bounty paper towels the tension is not always enough to tear them off cleanly with just one hand so I usually end up holding it down to get a clean rip. The major pros of this dispenser are the weighted non slip base that keeps it from sliding around and the stainless steel finish that makes maintenance simple with just a quick wipe. The main con is that it struggles with heavy duty paper towels often requiring two hands to tear without tipping or pulling the whole roll which might be frustrating if you are expecting a true one handed experience every single time. Still it is a functional and attractive piece that keeps my kitchen organized and as long as you do not mind using both hands for the thicker brands it is a solid addition to any home.

A Paper Towel Holder That Actually Holds Its Own
Color: Gold
This is a lot nicer than I expected for something as boring as a paper towel holder. The base has some real weight to it, so it doesn’t slide around every time you try to tear off a sheet. The spring-loaded arm also helps keep the roll from spinning freely. The gold finish looks good in person. It leans a little more bronze/brassy than bright gold, which my wife prefers in our darker colored kitchen. It feels sturdy, wipes clean easily, and doesn’t look cheap sitting on the counter. The one-handed tearing works pretty well, though it may depend on the paper towels you use. Thinner rolls tear off easily. With thicker paper towels, you may still need a second hand here and there to get a clean rip. We use the Costco branded Kirkland paper towel rolls and haven't had any issues getting just one sheet. I am guilty of yanking at our old paper towel with one hand roll to try and rip off a single sheet. My success rate has significantly increased since we started using this paper towel holder. It’s definitely more expensive than a basic paper towel holder, but it also feels like a clear upgrade from the cheap flimsy ones. Would I normally buy this? Probably not, but if I am splurging on kitchen upgrades, then I'd definitely have this on my list.

Pretty gold tone color and works well
Color: Gold
This is great for lazy people like myself. Just pull back the grabber hand and drop the paper towels in, no unscrewing anything or fiddling around, I only want to spend one second installing my paper towels and this lets me do that. The gold tone works well with my decor, it has a very finely brushed gold tone metal finish trending into brass color tones that looks better in person than in the listing. Overall it looks very high end. The bottom is very heavily weighted, paper towels slip right on, and removing a towel with one hand is a snap. The grabber hand keeps the towels in place. On the bottom are 4 very effective grabby strips that keep the unit from sliding. The whole unit weighs 3 pounds but somehow it seems like it's a lot more. Checking over the listing, it looks accurate other than some of the photos make it look a little less golden than it really is. This thing is so nice. I was going to use this at work but it might be too nice looking for an industrial environment so I'll probably just use it at home instead. The downsides on this are there were a few super tiny scratches that you'd really have to squint to see. You probably would not notice but still not ideal. The other obvious issue is these are currently priced at $50. Looking around at other options, I don't see many with all the features of this unit including upscaled finish, smoothly operating grabby hand, and heavily weighted bottom but certainly there are many other towel holder options that get good reviews for less money so I would not say this unit is the best economic bang for the buck. However if you really don't care about an extra $20 or you would really like an upscale nice brushed gold/brass finish, then it might be well worth it for you because this does work really well and I am very much enjoying it.
