• Opuntia salmiana is a tall, branching cactus with long, cylindrical stems that grow upright and form a shrub-like shape. The stems are green with bright white areoles, and in strong sunlight the new growth can turn a rich plum purple. This purple tint creates a beautiful contrast against the pale areoles. In its natural habitat in South America, it can grow up to about 6 feet tall.                                                                                                                                                     
  This species blooms readily with white to pale yellow flowers. It grows best in bright sunlight with very well-draining soil and infrequent watering. Let the soil dry completely before watering again. It can be propagated from stem cuttings, which root easily in dry, gritty soil.
