Philodendron 'Sun Red'

Philodendron 'Sun Red' is a compact, colour-changing Philodendron with new leaves that open in red, coppery red or orange-red tones before maturing toward darker green. A growing plant can show fresh red growth near the centre, warmer transitional leaves and older green leaves around the outside.

This cultivar has a self-heading habit, forming clustered leaves from a short central stem. Each new leaf changes from red at emergence through warmer transitional tones, then darker and greener once the blade has hardened.

Red new leaves on a compact Philodendron

  • Growth habit: A self-heading Philodendron with clustered leaves and a short central stem.
  • Leaf colour: New growth opens red to copper-red, then matures through warmer tones toward green.
  • Leaf shape: Leaves are broad, smooth and lightly glossy, with enough firmness to hold a tidy outline.
  • Indoor size: Its short-stemmed habit keeps the plant dense, balanced and suited to pot culture.

How Philodendron 'Sun Red' changes colour

Philodendron 'Sun Red' shows its richest colour during active growth. The youngest leaves carry the strongest warm red tones, then deepen gradually as the leaf hardens. A regular sequence of new leaves keeps several colour stages visible on the plant at once.

The central growth point should stay open to light and airflow. If the plant is crowded between taller plants, new leaves may lean or expand unevenly. Rotate the pot regularly and remove dry sheaths once they release naturally.

Care for short-stemmed growth

  • Light: Place in bright indirect light. Gentle morning or late-day sun can be tolerated after acclimation, but harsh direct sun can scorch the leaf surface.
  • Watering: Water when the top 3–5 cm of substrate has dried. Let the root ball rehydrate evenly, then allow air back into the mix before watering again.
  • Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with good drainage and air space. Dense, fine substrate keeps the lower roots too wet and increases yellowing risk.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity supports smoother leaf unfurling. A humidifier, grouped plants or a cabinet can help if new leaves stick or tear while opening.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally 18–27 °C. Growth slows in cool conditions, especially if the substrate is also wet.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. Small, regular feeding is safer than strong doses, which can stress compact root systems.
  • Pot choice: Use a pot with drainage and enough weight to keep the plant balanced. Avoid jumping to a much larger pot while the root system is still small.
  • Leaf cleaning: Wipe dust from older leaves gently. Clean leaves receive light more evenly and make pest checks easier.

Growth problems to check early

  • Pale or weak new leaves: Check light level and nutrient supply. Move the plant into brighter indirect light and resume light feeding during active growth.
  • Yellow leaves near the base: Check for wet substrate, poor drainage or an oversized pot. Let the mix dry slightly deeper before the next watering.
  • Stuck new leaves: Check humidity, airflow and root moisture. Dry air combined with irregular watering can make the emerging leaf catch inside the sheath.
  • Brown tips: Look for drying between waterings, fertiliser build-up or cold stress. Flush the substrate if salts have built up.
  • Marked new growth: Inspect the newest leaves first for thrips or mites, because soft red tissue shows damage quickly.

Pet safety for Philodendron 'Sun Red'

Philodendron 'Sun Red' should be kept away from pets and small children. Like other Philodendron, it can contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that may irritate the mouth and digestive tract if chewed or swallowed. Wash your hands after cutting or removing damaged leaves.

Botanical background

Philodendron belongs to the Araceae family and is native as a genus to tropical parts of the Americas. The genus name combines Greek roots commonly translated as “love” and “tree”, reflecting the tree-associated growth of many species.

Philodendron 'Sun Red' grows as a dense self-heading plant with red to coppery new leaves that mature toward green.

pleasant touch and color texture - not all colors are the same
I usually go for 100% cotton only but I really like the color and price of these sheets. Surprisingly, they feel very nice and fit my 12" mattress without being under stretched or over stretched. Non stretch sheet can act as a light blanket in hot summer days. I ordered a few more set of sheets in different color. The dark heather grey felt different, more coarse and not as smooth. It seems that color is 50% cotton 50% polyester while the mint was 60% cotton 40% polyester which for me made a very big difference in the manner it felt. So I returned the dark heather grey one.

So thin you can see through and have holes after second wash!
I cannot understand all these high reviews! People don’t seem to be using these sheets! I mean don’t get me wrong they COULD be 5-star worthy and I would’ve given 5 stars, if IF the quality was just better. I mean these things have nice colors, are super soft. The duvet cover has a zipper. I sleep well in them. A dream! All I wanted and what I was looking for! So why only a 1 star review you may be asking now? Well, the zipper is very flimsy and out of super weak and cheap plastic, but the worst is, that the material (the fabric) is so thin, that you can look through! I washed the whole set twice now. Cold as per label. And the pillow covers have holes around the edges! Not because there was something sharp in the dryer (or washer) with them (I washed and dried the duvet cover separately from the rest), NO. Just because the fabric is so darn THIN! It’s unbelievable! To the manufacturer: You could have made a really, really nice product, if you wouldn’t be greedy or soulless and would have just used a decent fabric thickness. This is ridiculous! I don’t know if all this made in china (well in this case Pakistan) crap is just made to take all our money for shoddy quality or to annoy the heck out of us because they can… If anyone in Pakistan reads this review (HAHA I know): please please make the same product, but use higher quality materials. Thicker fabric which you cannot see through and which will not rip or get holes after 2x washing. A tad better zipper, that doesn’t feel so flimsy that you need to be super careful to not break it, and you have a perfect product! Unfortunately, the way this was made, I can only give 1 star. Please be smarter than me and believe all the 1-star reviews that talk about how thin the fabric is! Please see the attached photos for an impression of the fabric quality.

Incredibly Soft & Cozy Jersey Sheets!
Size: King, Color: Oatmeal
I am in love with these jersey sheets! They feel just like a worn-in, favorite t-shirt—soft, breathable, and oh-so-cozy. The fabric is stretchy but still holds its shape, and it keeps me warm without overheating. Even after multiple washes, the sheets haven’t pilled or faded, which is a huge plus. The deep pockets fit my mattress perfectly, and they stay in place all night. If you're looking for ultra-comfy, lightweight sheets that feel amazing against your skin, these are a must-have! Highly recommend!

You will want to sleep on these sheets!
Color: Adelia Gray, Size: Queen Extra Deep Pocket
Buy these sheets! I have only slept on 100% percale cotton. No blends, no sateen mix, just pure percale cotton which these sheets deliver. The finish is soft, not rough or scratchy as some describe. Cotton, is not rough. Percale, however, may not be. for everyone. They like a like iron to keep them unwrinkled and smooth. Some describe the finish as crisp. Again, crisp, is not scratchy. Crisp is an old-fashioned texture that appeals to any who like to sleep on the cooler side. Not cold, simply cool. Cotton breaths, other fabrics do not. The fabric is light, but **not thin. Again, cotton percale is a lofty drape but with a cotton that breathes nicely. II purchased the extra deep pocket, queen size with an accurate fit. The days of misfitted bottom sheets are gone. These, slide on with ease. They are not oversized or sloppy. The elastic hugs the mattress with comfort. I did not need to struggle or attempt to stretch the fabric to encase my mattress. It was a proper fitting, fitted sheet. The elastic is plenty. The drape of the percale is perfection. The drop on both sides of the bed is again proper. Not overly generous and hanging to low, nor too short that they create a tug-o-war when sleeping to keep covered. They fall to the edge of the mattesss which is what I was wanting. These sheets also launder very nicely in cold water. The colors do not bleed. I dryer my sheets on perm-press despite percale is not that finish. It helps reducing wrinkling. When I hear my dryer chime, I instantly remove the sheets and lightly press them with an iron so the fabric performs as percale should. For those who like a wrinkled sheet that is soft, you will also be pleased. These are wonderful sheets that fulfill their product description, 100%. My only request is for more prints and colors like the rest of the other size mattresses. Queen, extra deep pocket is limited with selection which is unfortunate as more mattresses are made thicker, denser and with a struggle to purchase properly fitting sheets. These sheets are sized correctly to fit 22" and perhaps 23" mattresses. The days of small fitted sheets are past tense. Oh, also the pillowcases are generous. I sleep with regular sized pillows but this company cut the pillowcases to allow for queen or larger pillows so there is again, plenty of room. I am delighted to know this company and hope more prints will become available for extra deep pocket sleepers.
