Anthurium crystallinum

Anthurium crystallinum is a velvet-leaved Anthurium species with broad, heart-shaped leaves and pale veins against a dark green leaf surface. New leaves emerge from a compact crown on upright petioles and harden gradually as they expand.

The species is native from Panama to Colombia, where it grows in wet tropical forest, often attached to trees. Indoors, it grows best with warm roots, steady moisture and a loose mix that lets air reach the roots.

Anthurium crystallinum key traits

  • Growth habit: Compact Anthurium with leaves emerging from a central crown.
  • Leaf shape: Broad, heart-shaped leaves with a rounded base and tapered lower lobes.
  • Surface: Soft velvet texture that can mark if rubbed, handled roughly or left wet.
  • Venation: Pale veins give the leaves the crystal-like look behind the species name.
  • New growth: Young leaves are soft and vulnerable before they harden.

Anthurium crystallinum indoor care

  • Light: Bright filtered light suits this velvet species. Harsh direct sun can mark or scorch the leaves, while low light often leads to slower growth and smaller leaves.
  • Watering: Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist. Let the upper part begin to dry before watering again, while making sure the pot does not stay wet for too long.
  • Substrate: Choose an open Anthurium mix with bark, coco chips, pumice or perlite so air can reach the roots.
  • Temperature: Keep it away from cold windowsills and draughts, and let the top of the mix dry a little before watering again.
  • Humidity and airflow: Moderate to high humidity helps new velvet leaves expand cleanly. Fresh airflow helps prevent damp, stale conditions around new leaves and the crown.
  • Leaf care: Handle velvet leaves lightly and keep water from sitting on soft new growth. Remove dust gently only when needed.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth. If brown tips appear after feeding, reduce the fertiliser strength.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot or the mix begins to break down. Handle roots carefully; leaf size may pause or dip after repotting.

Anthurium crystallinum issues to check

  • Crispy edges: Look for dry air, dry substrate gaps, salt build-up or damaged roots.
  • Yellow leaves: Look for too much moisture, cold roots, compacted substrate or too much direct sun.
  • Distorted new leaves: Inspect for thrips or mites and keep humidity stable while leaves expand.
  • Leaf marks: Velvet leaves can bruise, scar or mark during shipping, handling or from water sitting on the surface.
  • Small new leaves: Often linked to weak roots, low light, recent stress or inconsistent watering.

Anthurium crystallinum flowering

A settled mature plant may form a small aroid inflorescence with a spathe and spadix. Remove it once it fades, especially on smaller plants.

Anthurium crystallinum handling and safety

Anthurium crystallinum should be kept out of reach of pets and children. Ingested plant material can irritate the mouth and throat. Sap may also irritate skin and eyes because Anthuriums contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.

Anthurium crystallinum name background

Anthurium belongs to the family Araceae. The genus name comes from Greek words meaning flower and tail, referring to the spadix. The species epithet crystallinum means crystal-like, referring to the pale veins against the darker velvet leaf surface.

picky yorkie approved
Size: 0.18 Ounce (Pack of 25)
well, like many of the other members of the dingo fan club, it’s been hard to find consistency with dingo products the last few years likely due to some products being manufactured in more than one country. even though i’ve thrown hundred maybe thousands down the drain trying to appease my picky 13 year old diva, the truth is i still won’t give up bc she likes what she likes! and she likes dingo plain and simply. it’s her world and i’m just living in it LOL! I’ve never had an issue with any of these peanut butter twist stick packages of 25 like i have had with the white and red ones. i usually have to soak them in hot water for a few mins to soften up a bit but not these pb sticks. my yorkie is 13 and doesn’t have the best teeth and is missing a few in the front lol so if something is too hard, she just gives up. this product is great value
