Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Flying Squid'

Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Flying Squid' is a compact dwarf form with narrow upright petioles and tiny spear-like leaf tips. The plant forms a small base with thin upright stalks.

The reduced leaves are the normal growth form of this cultivar. 'Flying Squid' produces slim petioles that finish in small pointed tips or narrow pieces of leaf tissue.

Small blades and slower water use

Because the leaf surface is reduced, the plant uses water more slowly than broad-leaved Alocasia macrorrhizos forms. A pot that is too large can stay wet around the roots for too long, especially in cooler conditions or lower light.

New growth often appears as a fine spear before the petiole finishes extending. A settled plant may carry several slim upright petioles at once.

  • Leaf form: tiny spear-like tips or strongly reduced blades.
  • Petioles: thin, upright and slightly outward-arching.
  • Base: compact, with narrow growth above the substrate.
  • Water use: slower than broad-leaved giant taro forms.
  • Care: warm roots, bright filtered light and a snug pot.

From the 'Plumbea' line

'Flying Squid' comes from the Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Plumbea' line, an old cultivated line of giant taro. This compact form has been grown since the late 2010s. It keeps the warm-rooted behaviour of the species in a much smaller plant.

Snug-pot care for 'Flying Squid'

  • Pot size: Keep the pot close to the root mass. A snug pot helps the substrate dry more evenly.
  • Watering: Let the pot lighten before watering again. Reduced leaves mean slower drying.
  • Light: Give bright indirect light or soft filtered morning sun so new petioles rise firmly.
  • Substrate: Use an open mix with bark, coco husk, perlite or mineral granules.
  • Temperature: Keep the root area warm and stable. Cold damp mix quickly weakens this form.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps tiny leaf tips avoid drying.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during a growth phase. The small root system handles gentle nutrition best.
  • Handling: Let soft new petioles firm up before moving the plant or working around the base.
  • Mineral growing: Use mild nutrients and steady warmth while the plant adjusts to inert mineral or semi-hydro growing.

Base-level stress signs

  • Soft petioles: Check root warmth, pot weight and recent watering.
  • Yellowing stalks: Inspect the lower substrate and root condition.
  • Dry spear tips: Review humidity, heat and fertiliser salt build-up.
  • Leaning growth: Rotate gradually and keep light even around the pot.
  • Very slow growth: Improve warmth and light before increasing water or fertiliser.
  • Pests: Mealybugs, mites and thrips can hide around petiole bases and tiny leaf tips.

Division, flowering and safety

Propagate by division, offsets or firm rhizome sections during a clear growth phase. Small divisions need warmth, a modest pot and an open substrate while roots re-establish. Mature plants can flower with a spathe and spadix; indoors, its narrow petioles and tiny leaf tips define the plant.

The name 'Flying Squid' comes from the thin upright petioles and tiny pointed tips. The plant contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals, so keep it away from pets and young children and wear gloves when dividing or cutting.

Keep it warm and bright in a snug pot; the narrow petioles weaken quickly in cold, wet mix.

Works great but very runny
Set name: Face - 1.7 oz.
I’d call this a liquid and not lotion. It literally pours out of the tube without even squeezing so has to be held upright at all times when the cap is off. Makes a real mess (and I do shake it well before opening as the instructions say). Other than the packaging, I really like the product. It blends well with no white cast after rubbing in, is moisturizing without looking greasy at all or causing breakouts, and has provided good sun protection. Impressed! Also like that while water and sweatproof, it washes off with a gentle face cleanser at the end of the day unlike some of the zinc-based products I’ve tried that leave a thick coating and require scrubbing. This is my first Blue Lizard product and I’ll probably keep using it as a daily sunscreen—but definitely not to throw in a bag and take to the beach because of the messy application. Bought the stick version to try out.

Great for sensitive skin and actually dries clear!
Set name: Body - 3 oz., Set name: Body - 3 oz.
I'm trying to be on top of my sunscreen application after YEARS of never wearing it. My skin is extremely sensitive and prone to eczema. Any chemical sunscreen that was applied to my body (especially the elbow/knee pits) would cause me to break out in horrible eczema patches. I switched to mineral sunscreen, but everything left a ghostly white sheen. Luckily, this sunscreen does exactly as advertised. I've been using it daily for a week straight, and I have had no problems with it. The consistency of this product is thick, kinda sticky at first, and a bit hard to blend/spread out, but I think that's bound to happen with any sunscreen that's actually protective. It may also seem that it leaves a white cast initially, but after letting it dry for a minute or two, it becomes clear. Overall I can't recommend this enough, and I'm glad to finally have a sensitive-skin-friendly mineral sunscreen that doesn't leave a white cast :)

Where has this been my whole life
Set name: Face - 1.7 oz., Set name: Face - 1.7 oz.
Let me give you some background. I’m middle eastern. That means I tan well but have two different skin tones; my January skin and my July skin. I wear a watch and I’ve been out of the sun since September. My tan hasn’t totally faded but the lighter band, that’s my real skin color. That’s how I want to be all over. I always try to make better choices in my skin products. I have tried so many mineral based sunscreens for my face and body but I usually end up returning to a chemical based one for several reasons. HOWEVER, I have finally found the product I’ve been searching for. Blue Lizard leaves no white cast on my skin. It’s easy to rub in. It also does not get trapped in my dense, black eyebrows the way other products did. It would gross me out and look like I had flakes in my eyebrows. I just spent the week at Universal Studios and I did not burn. I didn’t tan either, which is great. Tanning is also a sign of sun damage. Chemical or mineral sunscreens often prevent sunburn but I still tan. I don’t want either. I am sold and will continue to buy this product. I feel great about that it has safer and better quality ingredients.

Set name: Face - 1.7 oz.
This works well but is not ideal if you want to wear under makeup. It has a very oily consistency. Price is good.
