Smooth sumac (Rhus glabra) is a fast-spreading native shrub valued for erosion control, wildlife habitat, and stunning fall color. This 5-pack provides 500 seeds per packet—enough for large-scale restoration or hedgerow projects. The crimson seed heads persist through winter, feeding songbirds when other food is scarce.

There's something honest about smooth sumac—it thrives where fussier plants fail, paints hillsides crimson each autumn, and keeps birds fed all winter. This 5-pack of 500 seeds per packet gives you serious planting stock for erosion-prone slopes, naturalized borders, or wildlife corridors. Expect vigorous colonial growth and zero maintenance once established.

Key Benefits

  • 5 packs × 500 seeds each for large restoration projects
  • Native North American shrub (Rhus glabra)
  • Brilliant scarlet fall foliage
  • Persistent red seed heads feed birds through winter
  • Excellent for erosion control on slopes
  • Spreads by root suckers—plan for containment if needed

How to Grow

  1. Scarify seeds lightly with sandpaper to break seed coat
  2. Cold stratify 30–60 days in moist sand (refrigerator)
  3. Sow 1/4 inch deep in well-draining soil after last frost
  4. Keep moist until germination (2–4 weeks)

Key Terms

  • Rhus glabra — Smooth Sumac; native shrub with compound leaves and crimson fall color
  • Scarification — Nicking or sanding hard seed coats to allow water absorption
  • Root suckers — New stems arising from spreading root systems

Important Notice

  • Gardeners wanting tidy, non-spreading specimens
  • Those with limited space (sumac colonizes)
  • People allergic to Anacardiaceae family plants

A slope of sumac in October—that wave of crimson against a steel-gray sky is as honest as autumn gets.

Smooth Sumac Sumach Grow tips plant (Rhus glabra) is a rewarding tree to grow from seed — watch a tiny seed transform into a magnificent living landmark that provides shade, beauty, and habitat for decades. Perfect for home landscapers, reforestation projects, and anyone who appreciates the art of growing trees from the very beginning.

This variety thrives in USDA zones 3-11 depending on your climate, and adapts beautifully to indoor and outdoor growing. Start from seed for the most rewarding gardening experience — there is nothing quite like nurturing a plant from its very first sprout.

🌱 Step-by-Step Growing Guide

1. Seed Prep and Sowing: Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Many tree seeds benefit from cold stratification — place in damp sand in a sealed bag and refrigerate for 30-90 days before sowing.

2. Planting and Container Setup: Start in deep pots or root trainers to allow tap root development. Use well-draining soil amended with compost. Full sun to partial shade (6+ hours daily).

3. Germination and Early Care: Germination can take 14-60+ days depending on species. Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Be patient — some tree seeds sprout irregularly.

4. Growth and Maintenance: Grow seedlings in containers for 1-2 years before transplanting to their permanent location. Water deeply during dry periods. Protect from strong winds and extreme temperatures.

5. Harvesting: Trees are living investments that grow with your family. Expect seedlings to reach 6-12 inches in the first year. Many trees provide shade, beauty, and habitat for decades.

💡 Pro Tips for Every State

  • Midwest and Northeast: Start in deep pots and grow indoors for 1-2 years before transplanting. Protect young trees from harsh winter winds.
  • South and Southwest: Direct sow in fall for natural stratification, or plant out in early spring when soil is workable.
  • Container and Balcony Growers: Grow seedlings in large containers for the first 1-2 years. Choose the perfect permanent spot when the tree is ready.

🍳 Easy Recipes and Creative Uses

  • Shade & Privacy Screen: Plant as a natural windbreak or living fence for year-round beauty and privacy in your yard
  • Wildlife Habitat: Provides nesting sites for birds, food for pollinators, and shelter for beneficial garden insects
  • Bonsai & Container Art: Train young seedlings into stunning bonsai specimens — a rewarding long-term hobby for all skill levels

📋 Care and Storage

  • Store unused seeds in a cool, dry place — sealed container in the fridge extends viability 2-3+ years
  • Water consistently — morning watering prevents fungal issues and keeps plants hydrated through the day
  • Mulch around plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature
  • Check your USDA hardiness zone at planting time for the best results in your specific region

💧 Water Management & Irrigation

Efficient watering is critical for healthy root development and disease prevention. Water deeply and infrequently rather than shallow daily irrigation — this encourages roots to grow deeper into the soil profile, creating drought-resistant plants. Morning watering between 6-10 AM allows foliage to dry before evening, reducing fungal disease risk by up to 80%. Install a simple drip irrigation system with a timer for consistent, hands-free moisture delivery directly to the root zone. Mulch garden beds with 2-3 inches of straw, wood chips, or shredded leaves to reduce water evaporation by 25-50% while suppressing weed germination. Consider collecting rainwater in food-grade barrels — a 1,000 sq ft roof can capture over 600 gallons from a single inch of rainfall, providing free, chlorine-free irrigation water.

🧺 Harvesting & Post-Harvest Storage

Timing your harvest correctly maximizes flavor, nutrition, and shelf life. Most leafy greens reach peak quality when harvested in the cool morning hours after dew has evaporated but before afternoon heat causes wilting. Use clean, sharp pruning shears to make precise cuts that heal quickly and reduce disease entry points. For root vegetables, wait until foliage begins to yellow and die back naturally before gently loosening soil with a garden fork. Store harvested produce properly: leafy greens wrapped in damp paper towels inside perforated bags maintain crispness for 7-10 days in the refrigerator crisper drawer at 35-40°F. Root vegetables store best in cool, dark, humid conditions (32-40°F, 90-95% humidity) and can last 3-6 months when properly cured. Preserve surplus harvest through dehydrating, freezing, or fermentation for year-round enjoyment.

🌿 Companion Planting Guide

Maximize your garden yield with strategic companion planting. This variety thrives when planted alongside compatible species that share similar soil pH, water requirements, and sun exposure needs. Consider planting in a polyculture arrangement where nitrogen-fixing companions enrich the soil naturally, while aromatic herbs nearby help deter common garden pests without chemical intervention. Rotate planting beds annually to prevent soil nutrient depletion and break pest cycles. Three Sisters planting (corn, beans, squash) inspired arrangements work exceptionally well in raised bed and container setups for maximizing small-space productivity.

Quiet and Effective frother/mixer and Terrific Customer Service
Zulay Kitchen Powerful Milk Frother Wand We ordered two Zulay frother wands and after just several months of continuous usage one of the units stopped working and the other one was sporadically working, where sometimes it would run “full power” and at other times it was barely spinning or turning the beverage. I called Zulay and gave them my Amazon order number. After the Customer Service rep walked me through some minor things to check on the units she was also convinced that the units were probably defective. She had a replacement sent from Zulay along with a mini as a bonus for our troubles! And she had Amazon ship the other replacement unit. Both shipments arrived promptly within days and we have been using them for months now without any major issues. We use the units (the two “standard” wands) almost every day and they get used two to three times a day. They only take ten to twenty seconds to mix up cocoa powder, hot or cold. And the same goes for different protein powder shakes. What I especially like about these units is that there have been many times when I have had to use them off-hours, like between 5:00 and 6:00 AM. They are Whisper quiet so nobody gets disturbed. One generally can’t do this level of quiet stirring/mixing with a kitchen hand blender/mixer or shake blenders. These Zulay mixing units have really come in “handy” for us. We are very Grateful to Amazon for their prompt delivery, and especially to the Customer Service representative at Zulay for her help, and to Zulay for standing behind their products and providing us with terrific and prompt Customer Service! Thank you! Cheers! November 3, 2025

Great look and very powerful - consider what your wanting to froth/mix - may be too powerful
Color: Lux White, Size: Rechargeable Z1 Motor Max
It's a great frother - but more for large drinks. Very powerful, even on the low speed. I returned it because I want something to mix my collagen and creamer in my coffee. The first time I turned it on it shot half the coffee out of the cup - very powerful. It has a great look, sleek and fits easy in the hand - but for what I needed, two powerful. It would have been nice to have a fully adjustable speed wand like my replaceable battery powered frother.

Powerful, rechargeable battery, easy to use & clean
Color: Lux Absolute Silver, Size: Rechargeable Z1 Motor Max
2 speeds, easy to change back and forth to different speeds with one click , easily blends 1/4 cup protein powder in 12 oz milk on low speed. Easy to clean: Stick blending wand in tall glass with warm water + dish soap, turn on low speed to clean easily (don’t stick the part that holds the battery in glass). Also of note, chosen by Americas Test Kitchen as best milk frother but I use it to make protein shakes.

Works great on bullet coffee!!
Color: Lux Alpha Black, Size: Rechargeable Z1 Motor Max
I am really pleased with this frother! Frothers I have used in the past didn’t mix my decaf coffee, 2% milk, and MCT oil as thoroughly as I like (oil and coffee separated). This frother blends everything AND I get a nice layer of frothy milk on top!!! Charge lasts a long and the froth can be submerged all the way up to the button!!!
