It is a self-heading Philodendron, meaning it grows upright rather than trailing.

Good for beginners? Yes. Birkin is easygoing, compact, and communicates clearly when it needs water. It grows slowly enough to be manageable but steadily enough to be rewarding — a great choice for a desk or tabletop.
