🌼 Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix for USDA Zones 3 to 8

Bring a season-long sweep of color to a cold-climate landscape. We built this cold-hardy wildflower seed mix for the Northeast, including Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding region, across USDA Zones 3 to 8. It is made for cool springs, humid summers, and the swing of a Northeastern autumn, blending fast annuals with biennials and perennials so the planting looks striking from year one and gets better every season. These are quality, US-grown seeds, non-GMO, chemical-free, and never artificially coated.

🌸 Expect a layered display that runs 36 to 48 inches tall: scarlet flax and corn poppy against tall blue cornflower, perennial lupine, rocket larkspur, gayfeather, and New England aster, with golden coreopsis and black-eyed Susan, warm Siberian wallflower, and crisp white baby's breath, Shasta daisy, and sweet alyssum threaded throughout. With roughly 30 percent annuals for first-season color and 70 percent biennials and perennials for staying power, the color keeps coming as the stand fills in. New to sowing a meadow? Our How to Grow Wildflowers from Seed guide walks you through it step by step.

🌱 How to Plant

Prepare your site by clearing debris and loosening the soil so seed makes good contact with bare ground. Broadcast the seed evenly, rake lightly, and press it into the soil. Bury seed no more than 1/4 inch deep, then keep the soil moist until germination.

Seeding rate

1/4 lb covers 625 to 1,250 sq ft, or 1 lb covers 2,500 to 5,000 sq ft. For a natural, meadow-like look, use the lower end. For balanced color and pollinator activity, use the middle of the range. For a full, lush display, choose the upper end.

Best time to plant: early spring as the ground thaws, or as a late-fall sowing before the first frost, which gives the seed natural cold stratification over winter for stronger spring germination.

Safety & Responsible Use

This is a horticultural seed mix for planting and ornamental use, not for human or animal consumption. A few species in the blend, including Perennial Lupine and Rocket Larkspur, can be harmful if eaten, so we suggest keeping the seeds and growing plants out of reach of children, pets, and grazing animals. Wash your hands after sowing, and store unused seed in a cool, dry place away from food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which regions and USDA zones is this seed mix made for?

We built this cold-hardy blend for the Northeast, including Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding region, across USDA Zones 3 to 8. It is at home in cool springs, humid summers, and the swing of a Northeastern autumn, so the annuals, biennials, and perennials in the mix establish well and come back stronger each year. It also performs nicely across much of the upper Midwest.

Will these wildflowers bloom the first year?

Yes. About 30 percent of the mix is fast annuals that bring color in the very first season, while the remaining 70 percent is biennials and perennials that return and expand in the years that follow. You get a striking display from year one, and the stand deepens and fills in over time.

When should I plant in the Northeast, and how much seed do I need?

Plant in early spring as the ground thaws, or in late fall before the first frost. A fall sowing gives the seed natural cold stratification over winter, which sets up strong spring germination. For coverage, 1/4 lb covers 625 to 1,250 square feet and 1 lb covers 2,500 to 5,000 square feet. Use the lower end of the rate for a natural, meadow-like look, the middle for balanced color and pollinator activity, and the upper end for a full, lush floral display.

Are these seeds treated or GMO, and what if I am not happy with them?

Every batch is non-GMO, chemical-free, and never artificially coated, just clean seed selected for purity of 95 to 99 percent and tested for germination at 70 to 95 percent, so you know exactly what is going in the ground. That same transparency runs through our 100% money-back guarantee. Our policy is simple: if you aren't happy, send it back and receive a full refund. Anytime, for any reason.

Great for pregnancy (or regular use)
Style: SPF 50, Size: 4.05 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I searched far and wide for a safe mineral-based sunscreen for pregnancy. I settled on this one and I was not disappointed. It saved my skin from a lot of sunburn this summer! As other reviewers mentioned, it is harder to rub into the skin and can leave a whiteish tint, but that’s a small price to pay for a pregnancy-safe option.

Terrible, look like a ghost
Style: SPF 50, Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I love La Roche-Posay but unfortunately, I finally came across the first product I truly hate from them. This product is a complete white mask on your face and does not settle in at all. You’ll be walking around looking like a ghost all day and it gave me a mild irritation to my eyes.

Leaves white cast, works okay under makeup.
Style: SPF 50, Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
First time using this sunscreen. I have very sensitive skin and thought since my skin tolerates their cleansers and moisturizers surely it should tolerate the sunscreen. So far so good. It’s very calming on my skin (maybe because of the zinc), but it leaves a noticeable white cast especially if you have dark skin. I wear mine under makeup and have a separate sunscreen from another brand on days where I don’t want to wear makeup. The white cast actually acts as a blank base and helps my foundation to lay well. A tip I learned from makeup artists years ago. Sunscreens that leave a white cast cancels out your natural color and acts as a corrector, concealer and foundation to lay better and look more like skin. Think of it like painting on a blank canvas. The texture is not lotion like and is actually quite thick. make sure to moisturize well before apply this sunscreen. I’ll write an update if I notice any negative issues, but so far I’m content with it because of the purpose I'm using it for.

Safe for very sensitive skin
Style: SPF 50, Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: SPF 50, Size: 3 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
It is an excellent choice, especially if you have sensitive skin or want to avoid chemical filters. Minerals such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide act by forming a barrier that reflects UV rays instead of absorbing them.

Holy Grail Moisturizer for Rosacea
Style: Restorative Protective Cream-3.3 Fl Oz
In seeing so many negative reviews I felt compelled to weigh in as this is my favorite moisturizer. I have very dry, menopausal skin. Additionally, I have rosacea which seems to have been a nice gift from said menopause (you can only laugh, right?). It's very common for those of us in our 50's to have a compromised skin barrier and when an issue like rosacea is present, even more so. Because of all this my skin is very intolerant to most moisturizers and nearly all actives (over the last few years I've had to discontinue my retinols and chemical exfoliators). While ingredients like ALA's, petrolatum, mineral oil, parafin/bees wax, and lanolin are well tolerated and known to be quite soothing, they don't hydrate very well as they are more occlusive than moisturizing. Enter this product. Magically, it does both! It's marketed as a protective cream, which again implies occlusive, but it penetrates like no other. Gone is the tight, dry feeling that persisted even when I had a heavy layer of product on my skin (my previous moisturizer was Eucerin Original Healing Cream -- which still has its uses -- because it was the only thing I could put on my skin outside of squalane oil during a flare). Now, no topical can cure rosacea. However, the right product can calm the skin, repair the damaged lipid barrier, and improve its appearance. This moisturizer does just that and it's become my holy grail. Since starting this I've also added in the Cicalfate Serum which has only aided in repairing my skin. Another Avene product that works great for me is the XeraCalm Balm which helps with itching. I use all three of these daily and they've really helped fix the secondary issues that come with rosacea. As for the complaints about it being greasy or too heavy. I can see this not working for people with normal or oily skin (or perhaps only in moderation). But my skin loves the heavier weight and because one of the ways I soothe a flare is to keep a tiny mister bottle on hand and repeatedly spray my face so I have to guard against the drying effects of evaporation. These products are so lipid heavy that I can wet my face all day long without worrying about that, though I do reapply throughout the day. As for the watery consistency issue, I haven't had that problem but it does caution on the packaging not to expose the product to temperatures below 41 degrees F (5 C). I suspect that if it gets too cold either because of the weather or because of whatever warehouse it sat in during transit it will separate. Maybe open the package and before squeezing some out look to see if it has split and then shake it up/message the tube. So, if you have skin like mine don't hesitate to try this product. I'm leaving this absurdly long review for my struggling brothers and sisters out there with rosacea in hopes that it provides some relief! Happy moisturizing, internet strangers. ;)
