Cornfield Annuals

Cornfield annuals - flowers like poppies and cornflowers - were once considered arable weeds. Ploughing arable fields triggered their germination, and you still see poppies in particular, before harvest. That soil disturbance was why there were so many poppies in Flanders, incidentally. For the French the cornflower (pictured) has a similar resonance as the poppy does for us. We think both species were accidentally brought to Britain from the Continent by farmers, in the Iron Age.

These flowers are NOT found in wildflower meadows! They're not perennials, so won't come back year after year unless you allow them to set seed and then agitate the soil with a hoe or similar. Nor do they flower for long; we generally recommend sowing them in two lots, with a two week interval. They will flower pretty reliably 8 - 10 weeks after seeding.

Why and how can I sow annual wildflowers?

Cornfield annuals can give a cheerful splash of bright primary colours to wasteland or verge. They're not as helpful ecologically as perennial meadow species as they don't persist and only flower briefly. We sometimes add them to some of our meadow mixes as a "nurse" though; they can suppress weeds, as well as announcing that someone has seeded there! If you are going to use them like this, only add around 5-10% of the main mix you are using. This usually means you will be sowing at only something like 0.5g / square metre. It is really important you don't exceed this kind of density.

We also recommend them for school projects, sowing in containers, and for seed packets; they are quick to grow and pretty bombproof, enjoying a range of lower fertility soils and conditions. Despite this a couple of species in this mix, Corncockle and Cornflowers, are now rare in the wild.

About These Seeds

The wildflower seeds in the mix are sustainably harvested from plants in the UK, so they not only have UK provenance, they also have British origin. They can be sown in spring or in autumn, when they will flower the following summer.

Once they have set seed, leave the plants in the gound for a while then remove them and hoe over the bare soil. A new generation of seedlings will appear.

You can usually expect to receive your seed within five working days of placing an order.

PLEASE NOTE: Corncockle is beautiful and in the wild rare, so we think it's important to include it in this mix, but it is toxic when eaten.

Great toy!
Size: Medium, Style: Ultra Tug
We have a 1 yr old rescue (German shepherd mix) and she didnt really know how to play with humans, she was scared of everything. We got this toy to help us teach her how to play fetch and tug of war and it really helped her come out of her shell. She loves this toy! It is very durable and fun to throw. Just enough rope to tug with her and doesn't come apart like other rope material. We got medium size and prob buy another one.

Durable and fun
Size: Medium, Style: Ultra Tug, Size: Medium, Style: Ultra Tug
This is a cool toy. My dog took to it right away. It tosses great. I like that you can play a little tugging along with fetch. We mainly use it outdoors. It feels very strong and durable. For size reference my dog is a mini golden doodle and weighs about 30lbs.

Durable
Size: Small, Style: Ultra Duo Tug
Well, our dogs didn't end up playing tug with each other, but they love the toy anyway and it still looks pretty good after a month. That doesn't sound like much, but they both love to chew and destroy rubber and they're ridiculously good at it. They also really like chewing the strap between the two balls, which is still in surprisingly good condition. Most "indestructible" toys are toast within the hour. Well worth the money. Plus, the unpredictable bounce when thrown keeps the dogs busy.

Good quality ball for large dog, easy to clean
Size: Large, Style: Ultra Tug
It’s challenging to review this because I bought it for my son’s dog, and it doesn’t interest him at all, even though he likes and plays with regular balls. The ball appears to be good quality, which is typical for this brand. He likes to play tug of war, so I thought the combination with a ball would be a hit. The strap looks durable, so time will tell if he develops an interest in playing with this at some point. The ball is hard rubber and fairly heavy, so it should hold up to an aggressive chewer. It doesn’t squeak or make any other noise. It bounces unpredictably and erratically because of the attached strap. Both the strap and ball are easy to clean with soap and water.

A must have if "ball is life"
Size: Large, Style: Ultra Tug, Size: Large, Style: Ultra Tug
If ball is life for your pup this is a great option! Our 70lb mutt is obsessed. We got her the large size for reference. She is not a chewer so we have zero issues with the attached leash/rope part. The ball is the same hard rubber of a typical Chuck-it ball. The rope makes tossing and grabbing the ball from your dog so much easier and cleaner. I also love this helps avoid any choking hazard with typical balls having the rope.
