The Black Bat Flower (Tacca chantrieri) is a rare and unusual plant. One word best describes it: WOW! These flowers will stop you in your tracks! Tacca chantrieri is a beautiful and very exotic tropical plant oddly related to yams.

A bizarre but quite beautiful plant with aspidistra-like foliage and large, darkest purple, almost black flowers which resemble Batman's cape. The most intriguing features though are the bunches of long 'whiskers' protruding from the centre.

It prefers shade and likes to stay moist but not soggy. The unusual black flowers look like bats with long cat whiskers rising on long stems from the broad shiny leaves. It tends to bloom from late summer through fall, often flowering just in time for Halloween.

🦇Tacca Grow and Care Instructions🦇

For best results, sow seeds in good light at any time onto a good soil-based compost.Cover the seeds with fine grit or compost to approximately their own depth. We recommend germinating at 15 to 20 degrees C. Seeds should ideally germinate in between 2 and 6 weeks although they make take considerably longer.

Light

In the rooms for the perennial, it is better to choose places in partial shade, avoiding contact of the flower with direct sunlight. If you plan to grow Tacca on the windowsill, then it will be more correct to select windows facing east or west.

Air temperature

Since the perennial is a tropical plant, it needs to provide a certain microclimate for growth and flowering. In summer, the temperature for the flower should be maintained in the range from +18 to +30 degrees. With the arrival of autumn, it is recommended to lower the indicators to +20 degrees, avoiding significant fluctuations and deviations. It is important for the flower not to allow hypothermia, which for the culture is a temperature below +18. It is important to ventilate the room with the flower, however, drafts are best avoided.

Air humidity

A tropical plant will need to maintain a high level of humidity in the room, for this the florist should regularly spray the culture or use household humidifiers. As an effective option for maintaining an optimal level of humidity, you can consider placing a pot with a flower in a large tray with wet expanded clay or moss. As mandatory measures for the care of the flower, the flower will be provided with a night "steam bath". The essence of the humidification method is to place the plant in an enclosed room filled with steam.

Watering

In the summer of the "black lily" it is recommended to provide abundant moisture, the top layer of soil in the pot should be constantly moist. In autumn, watering can be somewhat reduced, and as for the winter months, during this period, the soil can be allowed to dry by one third of the total volume. For humidification, it is necessary to use well-kept water at room temperature.

Ground

A loose substrate with good aeration will become a suitable ground for Tacca. To grow a flower, you can use a ready-made mixture for orchids, which is sold in garden and flower shops. Also, the soil mixture for a tropical perennial can be prepared independently. For these purposes, it will be enough to combine one part of peat and leaf land with half of sand and turf land.

Top dressing

The flower will need fertilizer from spring to mid-autumn. It is best to feed the culture once every 14 days. In winter, it is best to refuse to fertilize the crop. For this purpose, you can use the compositions recommended for flowering houseplants.

Transplanting and pruning

There will be no need to transplant a flower into a new container every year. It will be necessary to replace the pot with a larger container only when the root system of the plant completely fills its volume. The work on the transplant is carried out in the spring. It is not necessary to cut the leaves of the takka, only the faded peduncle is subject to removal, otherwise you can spoil the appearance of the culture.

Resting phase

The plant goes into a dormant phase in winter. During this period, watering is reduced, and the indoor air temperature is maintained at +20 degrees. It is recommended to spray the flower weekly to observe the appropriate humidity level for the tacca.

Seeding

Before planting, the seeds should be washed and dried well. For processing, it is more correct to use a weak solution of potassium permanganate. After that, the seeds are rooted in a nutrient substrate, and germinate at a temperature not lower than +30 degrees.

The optimal composition for growing a tropical perennial will be leafy earth mixed with sand in equal proportions. Deepen the seeds into the ground should not be more than 1-1. 5 centimeters, with mandatory drainage at the bottom of the pot. You can expect the first shoots in 4-6 months. During this period, it is necessary to provide the seeds with heat, without temperature changes, and also avoid excessive moisture. Stronger young plants can be transplanted into separate pots.

Multiple perspectives and fascinating battle plans
Format: Hardcover
D-Day: The World War II Invasion that Changed History by Deborah Hopkinson is a non-fiction book about the events of D-Day. This was an invasion of allied troops onto four German occupied beaches. It took months of painstaking planning and coordinated efforts of multiple nations to pull of this heroic feat. D-Day is widely considered one of the most important military efforts in history. This book does an amazing job of bringing a pivotal point in human history to life. It shows the perspectives of military commanders, journalists, world leaders and soldiers, which allows the reader to become immersed in the story of D-Day. The book was divided into 6 main parts that covered events before, during, and after D-Day. Within these parts, there was numerous other sections, like “Invasion Briefings” and “Reporter’s Notebook.” This broke up the information and made it easier to understand. My favorite aspect of the book was the invasion briefings. As a World War II buff, it was fascinating to see the intricate maneuvers involved with each invasion, and how different units worked in unison. The labeled maps, captions, and diagrams made the information very accessible. Each of the four beaches (Sword, Juno, Omaha, and Utah) had separate invasions that defied the tremendous odds against them. The Allied troops braved beach obstacles, enemy fire and terrible weather, sacrificing everything for a common goal. I also loved how this book displayed the bravery of those behind the scenes during D-Day. Though they were not present on the battlefield, thousands of people worked to build machinery, predict the weather, and plan the invasion. If President Roosevelt had picked the wrong day to invade, the entire D-Day operation may have been for nothing. But under extreme pressure, Roosevelt rose to the occasion and picked the right date. I think he said it best: “I thank the gods of war we went when we did.” I would recommend this book to any reader over the age of ten who enjoys history and reading about World War II. I believe that the best and worst of humanity can be witnessed in wartime situations, and reading about prolific wars is very important. Such a momentous event like D-Day should be appreciated by readers old and young. I give this book five out of five stars because of the multiple perspectives and fascinating battle plans. This book did justice to the importance of such a pivotal point in our history, and was simply a great read. Review by Anya A, age 14, Metropolitan Washington Mensa

Couldn't Put it Down
Format: Hardcover
Hopkinson takes a huge and complex historical event and somehow manages to explain the overarching purpose and events without ever losing sight of the individuals who made it happen. Terrifying, riveting and satisfying in equal measures. Great for young people who want to know more about seminal events (especially ones their relatives may have lived through) and for adults as well. Highly recommended.

Other Words for Home
Format: Hardcover
Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga is a book that has melted my heart. From the moment I picked up this verse novel, I was engrossed in the story and the courage of the characters.  Jude, the main character, is a young girl from Syria. Her family has been separated by the unrest and violence in her country. To keep Jude and her mother safe, Jude's father has sent them both to live with an uncle in America. Life in America is challenging and scary. Jude is finding herself continually heeding her brother's words to "be brave." Taking his words to heart, Jude holds her head high as she starts school in America, meets new friends, and tries to find a balance between her life in America and her life in Syria. She even emulates his example and makes the choice to audition for the musical at her new American school.  Other Words for Home is a modern-day story of immigration and bravery. It tells the story of one young girl's desire to start her new life in America while she still honors the family and life she left behind in Syria.  It hits on the struggles of fitting in, learning a new language, and the realities of racism and intolerance that happens even here in America.  As I was reading Other Words for Home, I got lost in the poetic words that just flowed from the pages. They were melodic and entrancing. Jasmine Warga has a talent that I would put right up there with other verse novelists, such as K.A. Holt and Kwame Alexander. The verse novel structure was done with perfection, and it was a beautiful asset to Jude's story.

Everyone should read this book.

I wrote Jude for my twelve-year-old self, who never saw a brown girl in a book who was proud of her family and where she came from. A brown girl with hopes and dreams of her own.” The voice Jasmine found for her main character, Jude, is astonishingly authentic, wonderfully observant, and filled with love and hope and strength. Jude’s voice combined with the free verse blew me away for its lack of pretension, naturalness, and profound beauty. I was worried that the free verse would feel forced, especially coming out of a twelve year old’s mouth, but instead it’s surprisingly organic and easy to read. ⁣ ⁣ This is a Syrian refugee story that reveals what should be obvious: that refugees want what everyone wants: to be happy, to be safe, and to be themselves. ⁣ ⁣Jude’s story is told with humor and heart and understanding and joy. It’s possibly my favorite book I’ve read so far this year.
