Flame Thrower Palm Tree Info

Scientific name: Chambeyronia macrocarpa

Common names: The Flame Thrower Palm is also known as Red Feather Palm, Red Leaf Palm, Blushing Palm, Watermelon Palm.

Family: Arecaceae

Origin: The Flame Thrower Palm is native to the island of New Caledonia located east of Australia and north of New Zealand.

Appearance: It has clear single trunk with 10-12ft long pinnate leaves that are growing from a long yellow crownshaft. This palm has a spectacular bright red leaflet that emerges from the dark green crown and lasts for about 2 weeks.

Flowers/Fruits: It produces stalks of small purple flowers that comes from below the crownshaft.  Inflorescence is branched. Flowers are followed by small round  berrylike green fruits that turn red when ripe.

Growth Rate: Slow. This slow growing palm can get up to 10 – 20 ft tall and 15-20 ft wide.

Outdoor/Indoor Use: Both.

Cold Tolerance: Flame Thrower Palm can resist temperatures down to 20F when mature enough.

Light Req: Full sun to partial shade. It likes full sun but can also grow in partial shade.

Water Req: Moderate. It does best in moist well drained soil.

Maintenance: Easy. To prevent nutritional deficiency, apply good quality palm fertilizer that has continuous release formula twice a year during growing season.

Propagation: Propagated by seed.

Chambeyronia macrocarpa Red Leaf Palm, can be a bit challenging, but with patience and proper care, you can successfully grow this stunning palm. Here are some general steps to germinate the seeds:

- Clean the seeds: Remove any fruit pulp or debris from the seeds by rinsing them under running water. This helps prevent fungal infections during germination.

- Soak the seeds: Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for about 24 hours to help soften the outer seed coat and promote water absorption, which can stimulate germination.

- Prepare the germination medium: Use a well-draining, sterile medium like a mixture of equal parts perlite, peat moss, and coarse sand or vermiculite. This provides adequate drainage and aeration for the seeds, reducing the risk of rot.

- Sow the seeds: Place the seeds on the surface of the germination medium, then lightly cover them with a thin layer of the same medium. The seeds should be spaced out to allow for proper root development and air circulation.

- Maintain warmth and humidity: Place the container with the sown seeds in a warm, humid environment. The ideal temperature for germination is between 25-30°C (77-86°F). You can use a seedling heat mat or place the container in a warm spot to maintain this temperature range. Cover the container with a plastic wrap or lid to help maintain humidity, but make sure to provide some air circulation to prevent mold growth.

- Keep the medium moist: Water the germination medium regularly to keep it consistently moist but not soggy, as this can lead to rot. Use a fine mist spray to avoid disturbing the seeds.

- Be patient: Germination of Chambeyronia macrocarpa seeds can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months, so patience is crucial. Check for signs of germination periodically, and once seedlings begin to emerge, gradually reduce humidity and increase light exposure.

- Transplant the seedlings: Once the seedlings have developed their first true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual pots filled with well-draining potting mix. Keep them in a sheltered, partly shaded location and provide consistent moisture as they continue to grow.

Here's to Stinkbird!
Format: Hardcover
I love a story where I learn something new. I think young readers will delight in following Baby Stinkbird as he discovers his superpower. While he has many amazing traits, like his poopy smell and falling into a river (both of which keep him safe from predators), he has one fabulous talent that no other baby birds have. So dive in and find out more about Stinkbird’s adventures.

so fun!
Format: Kindle
With a title like Stinkbird Has a Superpower, I obviously had to grab a copy and read it. To be honest, when I first saw it, I didn’t realize the stinkbird is a real bird – otherwise known as the hoatzin which lives in the Amazon rainforest. I thought it was more of a cartoon character name, but I was wrong and that new knowledge made the book all the more appealing to me. I’m firmly in the camp that believes a children’s book should be one that both adults and kids can enjoy, and Stinkbird Has a Superpower definitely fits the bill! I chuckled at the back and forth between the father bird and his baby – the little chick was seriously adorable in both appearance and interaction. I learned a lot of interesting facts, and I loved the bright colors and vivid illustrations. And I think my nephews will be delighted to learn more about the stinkbird on the pages of this fun book, too (because what little boy wouldn’t want to learn about a stinky creature? lol). The format of the conversation between the father and chick allows similar engagement on the part of the adult/child reader pairing, and I foresee copious giggles from my nephews on a couple of pages. Bottom Line: Colorful illustrations, intriguing science, a surprising superpower (that isn’t what you think it’s going to be) and of course a stinkbird – Stinkbird Has a Superpower by Jill Esbaum and Bob Shea has all the ingredients for a fun and educational picture book, and the result is delightful in every way! Children and adults alike will love this book, and they’ll learn a lot at the same time. A great book for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers, and anyone who has littles in their lives to add to their library. (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book)

I’m not usually a fan of informational books, but this one gives lots of cool facts about a certain bird by weaving them into a fun, sweet father/son story. Pictures are adorable too!

Fun and filled with facts
Format: Hardcover
Stinkbird is a humorous, kid-centric tale featuring the Amazonian hoatzin bird. It's filled with interesting facts about this stinky bird. Esbaum's distinct, fun voice is inviting, and Shea's illustrations are lush and colorful. Backmatter is engaging and amusing, too! This will be a terrific addition to classrooms, libraries, and home bookshelves.
