Days to Maturity: 100 to 120 for grain production

Common Organic Oats is a type of annual grass that produces an edible grain. The slender-stalked plant blooms in large spikelets (flower clusters) for a week or 2 in late spring to midsummer that develop into ripened grains later in the summer or fall. The loose panicles of grain gracefully dangle on one side of the branch and create a lovely, soothing sound when rustling in the breeze. Oats are higher in protein and healthy fats than most other whole grains. They are a good source of soluble dietary fiber, calcium, iron, vitamin B1, and niacin and have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

An Avena sativa species belonging to the Poaceae family, Common Organic Oats is a domesticated cereal grass with multiple uses. Early maturing and high yielding, the plant is cultivated as a source of grain, forage, and straw. It is often grown as a cover crop to improve crop diversity, water infiltration and availability, and soil health. In fact, it's often used as green "manure" to add organic matter to soil, which can be tilled in at any stage of growth. It also slows erosion, smothers weeds, helps control pests and diseases, and attracts pollinators, which increases yields of crops planted nearby. Many upland gamebirds and songbirds enjoy the seeds and Canada geese eat the foliage as well. Open pollinated, Common Organic Oats produces seed that grows true to variety, ideal for seed saving.

Common Organic Oats grows best in cool, moist conditions. It has a shallow and fibrous root system and prefers locations with full sun and fertile, well-draining soil, but it adapts to sandy, loamy, and heavy clay soils and is second only to rye in its ability to survive in poor soils. It grows in soil with a neutral, alkaline, or acidic pH and tolerates drought, but it will not tolerate shade. The plant is relatively free from diseases and pests.

For grain, plant in early spring; for cover crop, plant in spring or summer; for winter cover, plant in early to mid fall. Reap the plants when most of the green color has turned brown and the seeds are hardening (no longer milky). Cut near the base, bundle, and stack upright to dry. For herbal infusions and tinctures, harvest at the milky stage and dry.

Packet is 1/4 lb, approximately 3,000 seeds

Excellent Adventure
Format: Paperback
For a small book this packs a powerful punch. Fourteen year old Troy is left in charge of his younger sister while his parents are away for twenty-four hours. Troy wakes to his cell phone ringing, his dog tugging on his sleeve and pitch blackness. Unable to reach their parents Troy goes next door to the neighbor for advice. Mrs. Jones makes it clear they should stay put. When Troy sees houses on their street erupt in flames he decides they have to leave. Unfortunately he can’t convince Mrs. Jones. Troy loads up his sister and their two pets in their dad’s Bronco and heads for what he hopes is safety. This book is full of realistic action between the older brother and younger sister. He takes his promise to his parents to protect his sister even when she becomes annoying. This is fast paced, on the seat of your chair action from the very beginning. For those who are fans of the “I Survived “ series by Lauren Tarshis, I guarantee that you will enjoy this series. I highly recommend this to all adventure readers.

Very exciting story
Format: Paperback
Paradise is where my parents retired and are buried. The house they lived in burned down in the fire after 34 years of wonderful memories with my husband and our 3 children. We are just so grateful that my parents died before the fire, my dad being the last in 2016 at over 100 years old. Our youngest son has autism and trouble reading so this was the perfect book to have him read to me. It’s just at his reading level and was a very exciting story. We appreciate all of the facts about the fire the author put in the last pages of this book, too.

Fast Pace Scary Read
Format: Kindle
A short read that grabs your heart strings from the beginning and doesn't stop until the very end. You can feel the terror, the fear, the fire and smell the smoke as the kids run for their lives. You cheer the kids on scared for them and the pets. My heart racing, tears forming, worry working its way in, do they make it? Read this book to find out. Kudos to the authors for excellent writing. A book all should read and discuss with their families!!!

Grabs Your Attention from the Start
Format: Paperback
Well written and definitely grabs and keeps your attention. I read it in one sitting. So did my mom and sister. Just a warning, this book did trigger some anxiety for me because of the fire. It uses actual street names and timeframes. We love to read the “I Survived” series to my son and this one was better in my opinion but I have ties to Paradise.
