This species is the most common bonsai from southern China. It can be found growing wild throughout China. In colder regions, it is deciduous, while in warmer regions, it is evergreen. This means that this species could also be grown outdoors as a deciduous tree in Europe. The elm has very small leaves and beautiful bark that peels beautifully as it ages. The elm sheds leaves relatively easily, but even if it has fallen bare, for example, it quickly regenerates.
