Tillandsia harrisii belongs to the Bromeliaceae family. A native of Guatemala, the saxicolous species is a fast-growing Tillandsia reaching a height of 6 to 8 inches. It is marked by thin pointed leaves, mostly silvery in color, forming rosettes. The leaves also have hair-like needled structures called trichomes on their surface that reflect light giving a silver-gray color to the foliage. This winter-dormant air plant gives birth to an inflorescence with purple funnel-shaped flowers surrounded by red bracts. The T. Harrisii grows well and fast in direct sunlight to diffused light.

Growth Rate

Tillandsia harrisii air plant is fast-growing.

Flowering

The plant flowers at least after a year or two after maturity. It can bloom anytime with an inflorescence shooting up to 5 inches bearing purple-colored tubular Tillandsia harrisii flowers.

Watering and Feeding

A tip for Tillandsia harrisii care is that it should be misted or submerged in tap or rainwater at least thrice a week during the hot season. During the cold season, once a week is enough.

Soil

Aerial plants like T. Harrisii do not need soil for growth as they grow on tree barks, wood, etc.

Hardiness

This unusual air plant grows well in hardiness zones 9b to 11b. It can tolerate minimum temperatures up to 40° F (4.4° C).

Light

It loves bright direct sunlight. However, during the noon hours, filtered light works the best. In case the light received is insufficient, you will find your Tillandsia harrisii black in color.

Propagation

Offsets or pups at the base are best to propagate Harrisii plants.

Tillandsia harrisii is more than a beautiful soft aerial plant adding an exotic look to your collection. It also is a good air purifier absorbing harmful elements from the air.

You Don't Really Need This, But...
This combination coffee scale and timer works exactly as advertised. It measures weights up to 2000 grams with 1/10 gram accuracy. The scale has three operating modes: espresso, pour over and manual. In espresso mode, the scale will automatically tare after a cup is placed on it then automatically start the count up timer and weigh incoming espresso as it starts to pour. In pour over mode, it will automatically tare after your cup/dripper/filter is in place. Then it weighs out the coffee dose as you add it. After you tare again manually, the timer and scale will start as you pour hot water. This allows you to let the saturated coffee grounds off gas for the desired number of seconds before continuing the pour. Manual mode is just that. You control the tare function and start the timer yourself. Battery capacity is great so USB charging will be infrequently required. Accessories include a short USB-A to USB-C cord and a clip-on silicone heat shield to protect the scale from hot espresso. Coffee spills are easy to cleanup and don't seem to have any ill effects on the scale itself. One gripe though: the weighing platform is only about 10 cm square so anything larger than a small coffee cup will block part of the digital displays. After all, the scale needs to fit inside an espresso machine. It isn't a full size kitchen scale. But really, do you need this device? If you want to be ultra precise in your coffee measurements, you love gadgets, or you revel in the coffee making ritual, the answer is certainly YES!

Scale programming and stabilizing
It took me a little time to figure out the different programming modes but now I know how to get quickly to the program I need for the coffee I brew. The scale is very sensitive and it takes a second until the scale stabilizes. All in all, I like it.

Precise, with super focused controls.
Color me impressed. I wanted to upgrade from an old Oster brand scale. It was a workhorse, and I still use it, but I prefer this Maestri House scale for coffee and tea. I compared them side-by-side, and their measurements are near identical. I've abused my old one, so I would imagine the M H to be more reliably calibrated, although the differences in readings while set to Grams was .01, so, for me, inconsequential, and may well have been user error as I had no control to measure them against. Here's what I like and prefer about the Maestri House S1: I love that it is rechargeable with readily available USB-C cords. I can take it with me, and not have to worry about swapping batteries. I love the silicone band that protects the platform. It is easy to clean, and doesn't seem to interfere with measurements. The scale is very sensitive. I could add or remove a literal pinch of ground coffee and it would register on the scale. The digital readout is bright enough to easily see. The controls could not be simpler: tap once to Tare, twice to change the unit of measurement. You can set it to liquid or dry ingredients as well. I also love that I can switch between grams and ounces without having to remeasure. Most scales do that these days, but I appreciate it. The timer is simple and easy to control--a very nice inclusion. Also, since the buttons are VERY sensitive, I barely have to touch them, so the scale stays perfectly still, and they work with wet hands. This device is focused, designed to be especially effective for making coffee or tea. It is compact, which makes it the perfect size for cups, mugs, filter baskets, etc. I wouldn't use it for baking or other kitchen tasks. Ok, I WOULD try to use it for that--I just wouldn't recommend it. It's too small for bowls and trays, because it wasn't designed for those. It is PERFECT for brewing and drink mixology. Also, I prefer to keep scales like these designated to weights under 5 pounds--let the Oster handle the big stuff. Overall, I think it's a fantastic little scale. I have had no reliability issues. Will it hold up over time? I think so. Plus, it looks great in my coffee corner. Satin black is kind of my theme. Happy brewing!

Great tiny scale!
I love this scale, though I don’t use it in the way it was intended. It’s designed to assist in making optimal coffee drinks. I just needed a scale with accurate fractional ounces readings. I use it for weighing ingredients for baking, or even light postal packages. It seems accurate, and it very easy to use. I keep it in manual mode, but it also has espresso and pour over modes. It can display weights in ounces or grams, and it has a tare function. The buttons are touch sensitive, so you don’t have to press hard. There is a beep when you touch a button, but the sound can be turned off. I’m a little confused on the charging function. I don’t usually like rechargeable devices, because it makes them disposable, and also because it means they are dead when I want to use them. So I was pleased when it seemed to work while plugged into my fast wall charger. The I read the manual which said A) the scale cannot be used while charging, and B) never use a fast charging power supply. Maybe they’re just trying to protect their liability. I’ll try to be more obedient in the future. The manual also says not to place objects weighing more than 2000g on it, to avoid damaging it. I violated that rule as well and it still seems to be functional. Overall, this is a great, feature-packed little scale, and worthy of someone better than I, who will actually use it to its full potential without breaking the rules.
