Philodendron atabapoense

Philodendron atabapoense is a Venezuelan climbing species with long, tapering leaves, dark green upper surfaces and wine-toned detail on the petioles, cataphylls and parts of the venation. The mature blade is broadest near the lower part of the leaf, then narrows toward an elongated tip.

Mature foliage can become large, thin-textured and slightly undulate at the margin. The combination of long blade shape, dark green upper surfaces and reddish wine detail gives supported growth a lean, strongly vertical appearance.

Philodendron atabapoense foliage details

  • Leaf shape: Long, triangular-ovate blades that broaden near the base and taper toward the tip.
  • Colour detail: Dark green upper surfaces with wine-coloured spotting or tones on petioles, cataphylls and parts of the venation.
  • Native range: Native to Venezuela’s Amazonas region.
  • Growth habit: Climbing wet-forest species that can be trained on a pole or plank indoors.

Philodendron atabapoense origin and mature leaf form

Philodendron atabapoense was published by G.S. Bunting in 1975 and grows as a climber in wet tropical forest.

Mature blades can be firm but thin, broad near the lower blade, concave along parts of the margin and marked by several strong veins from the base. Give the leaves enough vertical space so they can hang without folding or pressing against surrounding objects.

Philodendron atabapoense care for long tapering leaves

  • Support: Train the stem upward before it stretches sideways. Attached aerial roots help the plant carry longer leaves.
  • Humidity: Aim for moderate to high humidity during active growth so new leaves expand without sticking or creasing.
  • Light: Bright, indirect light suits the thin, tapering leaves. Harsh midday sun can scorch exposed surfaces, especially on fresh growth.
  • Watering: Let the top 20–30% of the pot dry, then water thoroughly. Avoid keeping the lower pot wet for days.
  • Substrate: Use an airy aroid mix with bark and mineral drainage. Fine, compact soil increases the risk of yellowing and root stress.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during the growing season. Large-leaved climbers respond better to steady nutrition than heavy, irregular doses.

Philodendron atabapoense leaf and root issues

  • Soft yellow leaves: Check whether the mix is staying wet too long. Improve drainage and let the pot dry further before watering again.
  • Shorter new leaves: Usually caused by weak light, no climbing surface, or interrupted root growth. Adjust support and light first.
  • Brown patches: Look for direct sun exposure, dry root episodes, or leaves touching hot glass or a grow light.
  • Stuck leaf tips: Increase humidity around active new growth and avoid moving the plant while a leaf is unfurling.

Philodendron atabapoense is toxic if ingested and can irritate the mouth and digestive tract. Keep it away from pets and wash your hands after pruning or taking cuttings.

Philodendron atabapoense etymology and description history

The genus name Philodendron comes from Greek roots meaning “tree-loving”. Philodendron atabapoense was described by G.S. Bunting in Acta Botanica Venezuelica in 1975 and is native to Venezuela’s Amazonas region.

Add Philodendron atabapoense to your order if you want a climbing Philodendron with long, dark green leaves and wine-toned petiole and vein detail.

Great Amber Fog Lights for the Price
Color: Amber Flood Beam (ZD000711), Color: Amber Flood Beam (ZD000711)
Installed these Auxbeam amber LED pods on my F-150 and I’m very impressed. The amber color is true yellow and cuts through fog, rain, and dust much better than white light. The beam pattern is wide and low, perfect for fog light use without blinding other drivers. Build quality feels solid — heavy aluminum housing, strong brackets, and clean wiring. They look aggressive but still functional. For the price, these are hard to beat. Bright, durable, and exactly what I was looking for. Would definitely recommend.

6 months old with moisture inside!
Color: Amber Flood Beam (ZD000711), Color: Amber Flood Beam (ZD000711)
Update; Wed. April 22nd, auxbeam saw my review and reached out to me immediately and are sending me a new set of lights hands down. No questions asked. That's great customer service! I will install those on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited. Thanks Auxbeam! I ordered these lights October 12th 2025 and installed them on my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It was nice because there were holes already provided on the Jeep for aftermarket fog lights. Today, April 15th 2026 I removed them from my Jeep to put them on my 1988 Mazda b2200 pickup truck. First let me say that these are built solid and they put off some really good light. Just be sure that you mount them pointing downwards so they don't blind oncoming traffic or you will get a lot of people flashing their brights at you. I knocked a couple stars off because after I remove them I noticed one of them has moisture in it and these are supposed to be a sealed unit. I'm not going to warranty it. I'm just going to take it apart and reseal it myself so I know that it's done properly. The only other issue I have with these lights is the switch that goes inside to turn them off and on has a red light that stays on all the time and can be a battery drain. It's also very bright and distracting depending on where you locate it? This is my third set of auxbeam lights and I am pleased with the quality of the lights, but I do believe the manufacturer needs to pay a little more attention at the assembly line. It's all about quality control guys.

Bright, cheap, worth it!
Color: 12D White Flood Beam (ZD000672), Color: 12D White Flood Beam (ZD000672)
I use these as ditch lights and im impressed. Mainly by the brightness and the color of the light which is like super white. These have saved me from colliding with deer at night multiple times now. They came with the wire harness which was great. The harness was a little long for the vehicle they are on but thats fine. I just tuck the extra into a crevice on either side of the fenders and perfect. The switch has been a point of annoyance with me for a while now though. The adheasive is not very sticky. Even on a thoroughly cleaned surface, it still sometimes falls off. I have since fixed the issue with a new strip of 3m adheasive. Oh also, I got these when they were on sale for around 65 dollars. Which I now see as an absolute bargain. They've lasted me so far a year. Not of daily use but still. Cool lights. Would buy again. Photo is with low beams on and these pods.

Tundra pod lights for off roading.
Color: Amber Flood Beam (ZD000711)
It comes pre wired so it’s pretty easy to install and the lights are very bright , almost looks like daytime when I’m running them in the lake trails, and my LED headlights are very bright but these don’t fall behind, worth every penny.

Great fog lamps boys and girls!
Color: Amber Spot Offroad Lights
Put these on my 2012 f150 market place light bar bumper and truck looks awesome and the lamps are like high beams by themselves. I can’t compliment these amber light pods enough. Intense strength. Unsurpassed brightness peeps. I bought some headlights for my 74 bronco too, can’t wait to install. Installing these pods are super easy too.
