Athoum White Stonecrop (Sedum album 'Athoum')

Athoum White Stonecrop is a tough, low-growing groundcover that quickly brings a clean, finished look to sunny beds and hardscape edges. Its succulent foliage forms a dense mat that helps fill gaps, soften stonework, and handle lean conditions without constant attention. As the season progresses, the foliage can take on red-bronze tones that add extra color when many plants are fading. It is a practical choice for dry, well-drained sites where you want reliable coverage and minimal upkeep.

Distinctive Features

This sedum forms a creeping, mat-like habit with small, fleshy leaves that stay tidy and compact as it spreads. In summer, clusters of tiny, star-shaped flowers rise just above the foliage and are typically white to pale pink, adding a light bloom layer without disrupting the groundcover effect. The foliage often shows red flushing in strong sun and can deepen to bronzy tones in cooler weather, extending seasonal interest well beyond peak bloom.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun is best for dense growth and strong color, with partial sun tolerated.
  • Soil: Plant in well-drained soil, especially sandy, gravelly, or shallow rocky sites, and avoid consistently wet conditions.
  • Water: Water to establish, then provide occasional water during extended drought, as it prefers dry to medium moisture.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 8 in typical garden conditions.
  • Mature Size: Typically grows about 3 to 5 inches tall and spreads about 12 to 18 inches wide, with stems rooting as they creep.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use a bright, textured patch as a low focal point along stonework or at the front of a sunny border.
  • Groundcover: Mass plant to create a durable mat that fills gaps and unifies plantings in full sun.
  • Rock Gardens: Tuck into gravel and rock settings where drainage is fast and heat reflects from stone.
  • Between Stepping Stones: Use where light foot traffic is occasional and you want living color between pavers.
  • Containers: Let it trail over edges in well-drained pots for a neat, succulent finish.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pruning: Shear lightly after flowering or anytime you want a tighter outline and to encourage fresh, dense growth.
  • Fertilizing: Avoid rich feeding, because lean soils help maintain compact form and better color.
  • Mulching: Use a thin layer of gravel or light mulch and keep crowns uncovered to reduce excess moisture.
  • Winter Cleanup: Remove any winter-damaged tips in early spring as new growth begins.
  • Propagation: Expand plantings easily by re-rooting small stem pieces in well-drained soil.

Why Choose Athoum White Stonecrop?

  • Hardy Coverage: Forms a dense mat that fills in quickly and holds up well in sunny, challenging sites.
  • Waterwise Performance: Succulent growth tolerates dry spells once established.
  • Seasonal Color: Foliage can shift toward red-bronze tones, adding interest beyond the summer bloom window.
  • Pollinator Value: Summer flowers provide nectar for bees and other beneficial insects.
  • Browsing Resistance: Fleshy foliage is often less appealing to deer and rabbits than many soft-leaved perennials.

Athoum White Stonecrop is an easy way to add durable texture and dependable coverage to sunny landscapes without increasing maintenance demands. Pair it with drought-tolerant perennials, ornamental grasses, or darker foliage plants to highlight its color shifts through the season. For crisp edges, fast-draining beds, and rock or gravel gardens, it is a dependable building block.

Building Web-sites for Dummies
Format: Kindle
The Dummies series of how to books is an amazing resource for those of us who are not professionals in any number of fields.. Whenever I want to do something (and learn to do it well) I head for these books.. and I buy all my books through Amazon These are invaluable books and not for Dummies at all.. but as a paralegal ~ I am not a web designer and I am not an accountant ~ I am not lots of things. But, if you can read, you can do. Great books. Buy them for what you don't know but what to do,

Not what I expected to be a website app builder!
Format: Paperback
Nearly 800 pages to look through. It is great for getting started but to write code and input it to have website function, a website app is needed. I can pay someone $800 complete and not have to buy an app for building websites!

This book is aimed directly at professional web designers and is build around Adobe CS6. It can be helpful, but...
Format: Paperback
Preface - I have a lot of experience making webpages and sites, but my experience is very dated (I haven't played with actual web programming in more than a decade). Many things have changed since I was building websites - including the standardization of HTML 5 and the widespread use of CSS. Since I am rebuilding a number of personal webpages - as well as my commercial site - my wife bought me this book to help me catch up on the new technology. Pluses - 1) The book does a really good job of giving a decent overview of the new technologies I need to learn. Like most "Dummies" books, it is easy to read and follow the instructions and information. 2) The book is aimed at actual web designers and while I am not a professional designer, the tips and tricks laid out in this book are very helpful. 3) I am not sure that someone completely new to website construction would get as much out of it as I did - there are a lot of assumptions made by the author about the reader's grasp of certain web technologies. That said, I think someone new to web design could probably still figure out what is being said. Negatives - 1) This book is aimed at someone looking to become a professional web designer. It is NOT a low level book and covers many things that a personal website designer is not likely to need. Given the fairly low price of the book, that isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it isn't presented that way in the advertisements for the book. 2 (and this is the biggie...) The book is built around using a VERY expensive piece of software - Adobe Creative Suite cs6. This software runs ~$1,000. This makes sense if you are trying to become a professional web designer, but for someone at home just doing a website for themselves, it is WAY out of most people's price range. You don't need that software to learn the lessons in the book, but it is heavily slanted for that piece of software. Most of the screenshots are aimed at the Adobe software. I am using a fairly decent piece of software, but I will need to get a book on that particular software to try to do some of the things the book talks about. I found the book helpful, but flawed for anyone NOT getting into professional web design.
