Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Sky Blue' for clear blue summer height

Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Sky Blue' is a compact, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with divided green leaves and upright flower spikes in clear sky blue with pale centres. It brings a vertical summer accent on a compact, garden-friendly plant. The plant suits sunny perennial borders, cottage-style planting, blue and white schemes, cutting beds and generous containers where moisture and drainage can be managed carefully.

Reference size is 100 to 150 cm in height and 50 to 100 cm in spread under good garden conditions. Containers usually keep plants smaller and slower than open ground, especially when root space is limited or watering fluctuates during spike growth. The plant is deciduous, dying back in autumn and restarting from the crown in spring.

Growth and flower display

New spring shoots build a leafy clump before flower stems rise in early summer. The spikes carry tightly arranged blue flowers with light centres, giving the plant a strong vertical line. After the main flush, cutting faded stems can keep the plant tidy and may encourage a smaller repeat when weather, moisture and feeding are favourable. By late autumn, the stems naturally collapse and can be removed.

Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Sky Blue' has a compact flowering habit, and the stems still benefit from support in open sites. Good spring growth depends on light, fertile soil and steady moisture. When those three are in balance, the plant produces the clearest flower display.

Where to plant Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Sky Blue'

Full sun is the correct light level. Choose a position where stems receive good light and some shelter from strong wind. A site near shrubs, a fence, a low wall or sturdy perennials can help protect flower spikes while still allowing air to move around the clump. In exposed gardens, early support is part of normal care.

  • Best light: full sun.
  • Exposure: sheltered enough to keep stems upright.
  • Good uses: mixed borders, cutting gardens, cottage borders and large containers.

Soil, pH and drainage

This cultivar prefers fertile, moisture-retentive and well-drained soil. Chalk, loam and sand can suit it when organic matter is added and water is available during active growth. It is tolerant across acid, neutral and alkaline pH ranges, so soil structure and moisture balance are more important than chasing a narrow pH target.

Winter drainage is important because the crown rests close to the soil surface. A border that stays cold and wet around dormant crowns can cause losses. Work compost into the planting area and plant so the crown sits at the correct level, with loose soil around the roots and surface drainage remains open.

Watering and container cues

Water deeply after planting and keep the root zone evenly moist while new growth and flower spikes are developing. In open ground, check during dry spring weather and water before leaves soften. In containers, water when about 25 to 35% of the pot depth has dried. Then soak fully and let the pot drain. This rhythm supports deep rooting and reduces stress during the flowering phase.

Container plants need a deep, stable pot. Delphinium stems are top-heavy when flowering, and a shallow pot dries quickly. A moisture-retentive, well-drained mix is best, with support placed before stems begin to stretch.

Feeding and seasonal care

Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Sky Blue' responds well to fertile soil. A balanced feed during active spring growth can help flower spike formation, especially in containers and lighter soils. Mulch in spring to keep moisture even and soil temperatures steadier, leaving the crown clear. Protect young shoots from slugs and snails as soon as they emerge.

  • Spring: support early and monitor soft new shoots.
  • Early summer: keep soil evenly moist as stems lengthen.
  • After flowering: remove faded spikes and retain healthy basal leaves.
  • Autumn: cut down collapsed stems and clear debris from the crown.

Pruning, deadheading and support

No formal pruning is needed. Deadhead spent flower stems after the main display, cutting back to a lower shoot or the leafy base. At the end of the season, cut old stems down close to ground level once they have yellowed. Support is best added while stems are short, using a ring, canes or twiggy material that the growth can rise through naturally.

Common issues

  • Chewed shoots: usually slug or snail activity during early growth.
  • Weak stems: often linked with low light, rich soft growth or late support.
  • Short spikes: check watering during spring and early summer.
  • Winter crown problems: improve drainage and remove soggy debris after die-back.

For a reliable display, keep the crown open and free from collapsed stems after wet weather. If a clump becomes congested after several seasons, lift and divide healthy sections in early spring or early autumn. Replant divisions into refreshed soil so new roots can establish before the next flowering cycle. Mark the crown position after cutback, as dormant delphiniums can be easy to disturb during winter bed work. A simple label also helps when spring bulbs or later perennials fill the same area.

Planting partners and safety

The blue flowers pair well with white delphiniums, hardy geraniums, salvia, roses, peonies, ornamental grasses and silver foliage. Place the plant where its vertical line can rise through lower companions. Delphinium is harmful if eaten and should be treated as an ornamental plant. Buy Delphinium 'Magic Fountains Sky Blue' for clear blue spires, a compact delphinium outline and useful summer stems for sunny borders and cut-flower planting.

These banana plugs are quite easy to use, and securely connected my speaker cables to the receiver. They have a quality feel as well.

Tips broke in the binding post
Size: 12 Pairs / 24 pcs, Size: 12 Pairs / 24 pcs
UPDATE: Two tips broke off when unplugging them from the binding post and are now lodged in. Inexcusable and an utterly poor product. Solid connection in the binding post with no wobble or wiggle. They require some force to insert into the binding post, but once they're in they remain snug. I also tried removing and reinserting a few times and the connection remained solid. I've used other plugs in the past that have a softer tip and easily deform after one or two insertions. These do not have that issue.

Does the job, easy use, a bit bulky not exactly as described
Size: 12 Pairs / 24 pcs
Bare wire can be intolerable to work with. Banana plugs make a positive secure connection. These plugs are a touch bulky. Nice to not have to deal with small screws. Use as large of gauge wire as possible. The description says no unintentional disconnections. I beg to differ the bite of teeth aren’t as good as described. Used a 16 gauge pure copper speaker wire and a teenager taught me how secure the wire really is by tugging on the wire not the banana plug pulling the wire free. It does the job, it’s not the latest and greatest. If you need easy get these. If you want slim secure banana plugs buy the small screw type.
