Vanilla planifolia, often referred to as the vanilla orchid, is a remarkable and highly sought-after tropical orchid native to Central and South America. This orchid stands out for its vining, climbing nature and its lush, leathery, green leaves. However, it's most famous for the aromatic and exotic vanilla pods it produces. These pods are a source of natural vanilla flavor and fragrance and are highly valued in culinary and perfumery applications. Vanilla planifolia orchids bear intricate, cream-colored, waxy flowers, and they are known for their distinctive pollination method – they are primarily pollinated by specific species of bees and hummingbirds. In cultivation, the vanilla orchid requires a warm, humid environment with filtered sunlight and support for its vines to climb. It's a plant of great economic and cultural significance, adding a touch of tropical allure to both the culinary world and the fragrance industry, making it a precious and enchanting orchid.  Zones 10-11

Germination

Germinating Vanilla planifolia from seeds can be a challenging but rewarding process. First, Soak seeds in a 4% sodium hypochlorite or (bleach) solution for 90 minutes. Plant them in a well-draining orchid potting mix, barely covering them with a fine layer of the mix. Maintain a warm, consistently humid environment by covering the pot with a clear plastic bag or a plastic dome to create a mini-green house. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Place the pot in bright, indirect sunlight, ensuring temperatures of around 25-30°C (77-86°F). Germination can be quite slow, taking several weeks to months. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be carefully transplanted into individual pots or larger containers. Growing vanilla orchids from seed can be a patient and fascinating endeavor, eventually rewarding you with the opportunity to cultivate your own vanilla beans.

Interesting Follow Up to the 80/20 Principle
Format: Paperback
If you enjoyed the 80/20 Principle this is a good guide to applying it in your life. He does make some bold predictions like highly competent individuals will soon make public corporations obsolete. Some of this book is highly speculative and other parts are very practical. Luckily it is pretty easy to tell which is which. Very interesting book.

A Few Gems, but Not the Right Fit for Me
Format: Kindle
This book focuses on the 80/20 principle, emphasizing the importance of identifying and maximizing the 20% of activities that yield the greatest results. While it offers valuable insights on growth, creativity, and leveraging strengths, it didn’t resonate with me personally, and I found the reading experience less enjoyable. Key Takeaways: • Growth requires creating something new and meaningful, not maintaining the status quo. • Focus on your “20% spike”—your unique strengths—and develop them like an athlete. • Use the 80/20 principle to identify the most profitable parts of a business. Overall, the ideas are useful, but the book didn’t fully capture my interest or provide practical applications I could relate to.
