Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum'

Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' has long green leaves edged in white to cream, giving it the classic pale-edged spider plant look. The leaves rise from a central tuft, then arch outward and may hang below the pot on older plants.

Mature plants can send out thin stems with small white flowers, followed by young plantlets. Once those plantlets show tiny roots, they can be rooted separately.

Pale-edged spider plant traits

  • Green leaf centres with white to cream margins
  • Long, narrow leaves that arch from a tufted centre
  • Small white flowers on mature stems
  • Young plantlets along the flowering stems
  • Fleshy roots that store moisture and fill containers over time
  • Non-toxic to cats and dogs

Roots, runners and origin

Chlorophytum comosum belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is native across parts of tropical Africa into southern Africa. It grows as a perennial with strap-shaped leaves, fleshy storage roots and slender flowering stems.

'Variegatum' is the pale-margined variegated cultivar. Like the species, it makes fleshy roots and can produce long stems with plantlets.

Variegatum spider plant care

  • Light: Choose a bright spot with protection from strong midday sun. Gentle early or late sun is fine after acclimation, but harsh sun can scorch the pale leaf edges.
  • Watering: Give a full soak once the upper part of the substrate has dried, then let excess water drain away. The fleshy roots handle short dry phases better than a wet pot.
  • Water quality: Brown tips are common on spider plants. If they keep returning, check for mineral-heavy tap water or fertiliser salt build-up. Rainwater, filtered water or low-mineral water can help where tap water causes repeated tip burn.
  • Substrate: Use a mix that lets air reach the thick roots while still holding a little moisture. Perlite, pumice, fine bark or similar open material helps prevent compact wet soil.
  • Temperature: Warm indoor conditions keep the roots growing steadily. Cool wet substrate can slow growth and damage roots.
  • Humidity: Average home humidity is usually enough. Very dry heated air can make brown tips worse, especially on older leaves.
  • Feeding: A light feeding routine is enough during active growth. Too much fertiliser can increase salt stress and may reduce plantlet formation.
  • Repotting: Repot when the roots press firmly against the pot, the plant dries unusually fast or water runs through without wetting the mix properly.
  • Pruning: Trim dry tips if needed and remove spent flower stems once plantlets are taken or the stems dry.
  • Propagation: Root plantlets once tiny roots are visible, or divide mature clumps during repotting.
  • Summer outdoors: Warm, sheltered shade can suit it in summer. Acclimate first and bring it back indoors before nights turn cool.

Brown tips, roots and runner checks

  • Brown tips: Dry air, irregular watering, mineral-heavy water, fertiliser salts and very dry substrate are the usual causes. Check watering first, then flush the mix if salts have built up.
  • Yellowing leaves: Wet, compacted substrate or poor drainage are common causes. Check the roots before adding fertiliser.
  • Soft roots or loose centre: The root zone may be staying too wet, especially in a cool spot. Let the mix dry more evenly and repot into a more open substrate if needed.
  • Scorched pale margins: Direct sun can burn the light leaf edges. Move the plant into filtered light and remove only fully damaged leaves.
  • Few plantlets: Young plants may need more maturity. Too much fertiliser can also keep growth focused on leaves.
  • Dry, folded leaves: The plant may have dried too far between waterings. Water thoroughly, then adjust the interval rather than giving small sips.

Pets and long runners

Spider plants are non-toxic to cats and dogs. Ingested leaves may still cause mild stomach upset, so keep long runners away from pets that nibble plants.

Spider plant name

The accepted species name is Chlorophytum comosum (Thunb.) Jacques. The genus name refers to green or yellow-green plants, and comosum means furnished with a tuft, matching the plant’s tufted growth. 'Variegatum' is the cultivar name for the pale-margined form.

Chlorophytum comosum 'Variegatum' grows from a tufted centre into an arching spider plant with striped leaves, fleshy roots and plantlet-producing stems.

New formula
Size: 1.6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: New and Improved Formula!
I love the original aqua cream but it seems they have changed the formula and it is a much thinner, more liquidy product. The scent has also changed, though it’s fairly neutral, and it now comes in a smaller glass container compared to the original plastic.

Obsessed. Soothing, effective, fragrance-free, incredibly healing
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I’ve been loving this so much I bought a second bottle after a few days of using it. It has all the skin soothing benefits of the tolerance lotion cleanser, but it’s also a really great cleanser. It’s almost not noticeable how good it is at cleansing because your skin doesn’t feel stripped after, but it takes things off really quickly. I was worried because it doesn’t foam a lot and it feels so nurturing — much like the tolerance lotion cleanser (which I use as a second cleanse when my skin needs a few days to recover from something like a derm office treatment) — but when I wash again with my favorite HG cleanser nothing extra comes off, and I tested it twice on waterproof eyeliner that I’d swiped on my forearm for an hour or so, the eyeliner dissolved and wiped off with two or three gentle swipes. It has a very emollient texture, so when you rub it against your skin it slips so easily you don’t realize it’s dissolving and taking things away because there is no friction. So it’s great at taking off makeup, it’s AMAZING at cleaning makeup brushes, and IT DOES NOT BURN MY EYES AT ALL. Also, it is FRAGRANCE-FREE… before I bought it I read a review complaining about smelling a citrus fragrance, that person either has some sort of brain tumor or something spilled on their bottle when it was in a warehouse because this is definitely a fragrance-free product. Prior to trying this, I had tried another cleanser that gave me weird acne hives all over my chest (never happened to me before) and I was struggling to heal the acne and the irritation. I noticed an immediate difference when I started using the tolerance cleanser on it; the fresh redness went away, the acne started healing, and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been healing fast. So I’ve been using this on my body as well and it’s soothing and moisturizing in all the places where other things have been drying. I have mild rosacea and I hadn’t realized how irritated my skin was from the last thing I’d tried until after 5 days or so of using this my skin tone looked much more even and the stubborn PIH I have from a two-zit hormonal breakout a month ago finally looked dramatically lighter (as recently as the week before, I’d needed to cover them with high-coverage concealer). Because this doesn’t foam much, some people might not realize how well it’s cleaning… I encourage you to judge it based on how your skin looks and feels. Since it is very emollient though, I do think it’s important to use it with a face wash scrubber or washcloth just to ensure you’re getting some mild mechanical exfoliation and clearing away skin cells that could be trapping stuff in your pores. For this reason, I do wash my face with this twice so the first wash can get off makeup/debris/oil and then the second wash can really penetrate and clean my skin.

No Scent and Gentle
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I broke out in a case of Perioral Dermatitis recently and bought this product to help before I could see my doctor. Avene Tolerance facial cleanser has no scent and is very gentle on my skin. It didn’t burn when washing with this product, and even helped to slough off the dead skin around my lips. My face feels clean, not dry. I am still going to see my doc to get an RX for the inflammation, but I do believe this product helped to alleviate the dryness and tightness of my skin and lips. I’ve used other Avene products and I’m very happy with them. Even though these products are more expensive, to me they are well worth the money because they are much more gentle on the skin than any other products I’ve used. I will buy this product again just because of the fact that it’s so gentle. PS: at the time of purchase for this product, I also bought Avene’s Tolerance Control Skin Recovery Cream (you don’t need to use a lot of this one on your entire face), and Avene’s Cicalfate for lips. Between these 3 products, my lips and skin feel a lot better (however, I will still see my doctor because I have Crohn’s Disease and Perioral Dermatitis is considered an extra-intestinal side effect of Crohn’s).
