🌿 Schefflera actinophylla ‘Amate’ — Umbrella Tree ‘Amate’

Schefflera actinophylla ‘Amate’, commonly known as the Umbrella Tree ‘Amate’, is a bold and glossy indoor tree prized for its tropical aesthetic, fast growth, and ease of care. Native to the rainforests of Australia and New Guinea, this variety of Schefflera actinophylla has been specially selected for its larger, broader leaves and vigorous, upright habit. The plant’s name comes from its distinctive umbrella-like leaf arrangement — each long stem holds a cluster of broad, shiny green leaflets that radiate outward like spokes. The 'Amate' cultivar boasts deeper green, more lustrous foliage than the standard species, with a naturally tidy and symmetrical growth habit. It makes an excellent choice for bright interiors, atriums, and conservatories, where it quickly becomes a lush, tree-like feature plant. While relatively low-maintenance, it thrives best with consistent conditions and is well-suited to homes and offices alike.

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Indoors: Prefers bright, indirect light for best growth. Can tolerate some gentle morning sun.

  • Too much sun: Strong, direct sunlight may scorch the leaves.

  • Too little light: Leads to leggy growth, leaf drop, and reduced vibrancy.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature: 18–27°C (65–80°F)

  • Minimum temperature: Keep above 12°C (54°F); protect from cold draughts.

  • Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity but prefers moderate to high humidity. Mist occasionally in dry environments.

💧 Watering Needs

  • Watering frequency: Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry out between waterings.

  • Tip: Water thoroughly and allow excess to drain away. Do not let the plant sit in water.

  • Winter: Reduce watering frequency slightly when growth slows.

🪴 Soil & Repotting

  • Soil type: Well-draining potting compost, such as a general-purpose mix with added perlite or bark.

  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.0)

  • Repotting: Every 2–3 years or when rootbound. Use a sturdy pot to support its upright growth.

🌱 Feeding

  • Growing season (spring–summer): Feed every 4–6 weeks with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser.

  • Autumn–winter: Feeding can be reduced or paused depending on growth.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Pruning: Trim to maintain shape and encourage branching. Pinch out tips if a bushier form is desired.

  • Leaf care: Wipe leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep them glossy.

  • Height control: Regular pruning helps prevent the plant from becoming too tall or top-heavy indoors.

🌾 Propagation

  • Stem cuttings: Can be propagated from healthy stem cuttings placed in water or moist compost.

  • Air layering: An effective option for larger, mature plants.

🐛 Pests & Problems

  • Common pests: Spider mites, aphids, mealybugs, and scale insects.

  • Symptoms: Sticky residue, curled leaves, or discolouration may indicate infestation.

  • Treatment: Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Increase humidity and airflow to discourage pests.

  • Common issues:

    • Leaf drop: Often caused by changes in light, draughts, or overwatering.

    • Brown tips: Usually due to low humidity or inconsistent watering.

🧤 Toxicity & Safety

  • Toxicity: Mildly toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Can cause mouth irritation and digestive upset.

  • Precaution: Keep out of reach of pets and children.

🏡 Indoor Care Highlights

  • A fast-growing statement plant perfect for bright living rooms, offices, and conservatories.

  • Adds height and volume to plant displays — ideal for corners or as a backdrop.

  • Combines beautifully with other tropical foliage like Monstera, Philodendron, and Ficus species.

  • Adaptable and resilient — perfect for plant lovers seeking low-fuss greenery with big impact.

Bought 4 - burned out in 6 wks
I paid full price and purchased four of these; within six weeks one was inoperable and won't turn on at all. Dead. One other is barely hanging on and two are still doing okay. Given the price, I'd expect far more.

Can’t recommend with 2/6 failing in 2
Purchased 6 lights, two failed within 8 weeks photo shows dead la get on left vs functional one on right. Sadly, I have received no response or support from the company. Who knows how long the other 4 lights will last.

pricey but worth it
I just happened to check reviews on this and saw a couple negatives. I don't doubt that they have had some issue with the solar panels but that's not been my experience. I've purchased 6 over the span of a year and a half from various merchants including amazon. Gama Sonic is pricey in general, yet I've found I can rely on the quality of the brand. I have other models as well. This particular is one of my favorites because of the versatility in placement, whether staked in the ground or in a pipe or fence for a higher mount. The hook is solid as is the stake itself. The brightness is great as long as you understand what you're getting in lumens and it meets the specs for your purpose. My first 2 have now passed the 2 year mark and going strong. Of course, there's not much sun during the Jersey winter so they don't have the juice to last long but for 8-9 months of the year they burn all night. I anticipate having to replace the battery next season at some point. 3 year life is fine for me. Bulb is supposed to last 10 years. Not sure I'll be around to update. I also appreciate that if you have slim enough hands, you can access the on off switch from underneath for those times you don't want it or wish to change the brightness. The solar panel design is also very functional with a somewhat stylish look. Personal taste on that one I guess but it does soak up the rays. Like I said, pleased enough to go back twice more.

Quick replacement for defective one
I really love these lights; they consistently stay on all night on most nights given that I live in a state with lots of cloudy days and it is winter. That is a huge plus. I did have one that was defective and I received a replacement very quickly and was able to charge it up in the sun and it works very well. In some of them I have noticed condensation (in ones that I purchased about 6 months ago) but for now they work flawlessly. You really need to be aware of the level of sunlight to use solar lights effectively and for those areas that there isn't enough you need to accept the limitations or install low voltage lights for supplemental light in those areas. These are my favorite and most reliable solar path lights and I will continue to buy more of them. Amazon readily accepted by return and from my return to new light was only a couple of days, which I found was impressive and appreciated!

Fantastic, until they were not.
Expensive, but very nice and very effective solar lights. Definitely were brighter and stayed on longer than most. however, 5 months later they have all but stopped working. Majority of the solar panels look like they are damaged, but I've no idea how they got damaged. I'll post some pictures of what they look like, but its like they were damaged by water or something; which obviously they should not be!
