We love the ever-popular Rubber Plant or Ficus Elastica (and sometimes called Ficus Robusta) for its simplicity and tropical looks. Picture emerald green, glossy leaves shiny enough for droplets of water to slide off….picture a large, tall houseplant standing proudly in your home, bringing a taste of the lush, wild rainforest to your hallway or your living room….the Rubber Tree Plant has all of this and more.

It’s a classic, it has stood the test of time, remaining very popular over decades, never losing its appeal.  It’s one of our extra-large houseplants.

The Rubber Plant rubber plant ficus Elastica is rewarding to grow and beautiful when mature. As it thrives in areas with full sun to partial shade, it will suit any room in the house, wherever you want to add a dash of the exotic. When growing the Rubber Plant indoors, avoid drafts near large windows or doors.  

It is native to Asia and in the wild can grow up to 60 metres tall with a trunk that can be 2 metres thick! It won’t do this in your home though, its ultimate height will be more like 2 metres in the right conditions.

Our top tip is to train your Ficus tree to be tall and leggy: its unusual shape is beautiful and casts wonderful shadows in summer. The best advice we can give is to neglect your Ficus tree a little - it will grow stronger if you only water it once the top layers of soil are dry: the worst thing you can do is to overwater - as is the case for most of our tropical houseplants.

How to care for a Rubber Plant Tree?

The rubber plant is easy to care for and will cope with a wide variety of conditions but generally good light, and avoid overwatering and it will live a long and beautiful life in your home. 

Where should I put it?

The Rubber Plant likes a bright, sunny spot, lots of light.

What temperature does it like?

Your Rubber Tree plant likes it warm, not cold or draughty.

How much should I water?

Wondering how to water a ficus houseplant? It’s easy. Once a week in summer, about every 2 weeks in winter, always wait until the top 2 inches of soil are dry before watering.

Does it need feeding?

Yes, once a month March-August with a liquid feed. Happy Houseplants sell our own vegan, organic plant food.

It's the thinnest we've found so far, which is excellent for hiding behind furniture that blocks outlets, while this strip still makes power easily accessible. Though I will say I do appreciate the USB A and C ports for charging and find them quite handy for quick charging devices. It is a lot more useful than I originally thought. My main gripe is that the mounting on the back is not the typical X X insets that others have, which allow sliding the screws into any direction, so it can be mounted any direction, and instead are just - - so it can only slide a single direction, which I find much more limited when we mounted these under our kids' desks.

True to size & Use a Drill

Love this! Works perfectly for where I wanted it. I did measure my room incorrectly and thought it would be smaller, thankfully it’s not and thankfully it’s not bigger than the room itself. I did like how the whole thing was move-able but it was a bit annoying so I just added extra clips to the left of the middle one and unscrewed the right of the middle at the bottom so it opens like a door, this did make it a bit flimsy but duck taping it to the wall as anchor it works. 100% recommend, but do suggest a drill and a second set of hands to put it together, due to its size it can be a bit difficult to maneuver putting together yourself. Also if you have a clingy cat like I do, and think this will help keep them out, no, my cat who is very large can manage to squeeze underneath it.
