Monstera lechleriana variegata

Monstera lechleriana variegata is a variegated climbing Monstera with elongated green leaves marked by cream to white sectors, streaks, or marbling. Young plants usually carry simpler blades, while mature supported vines can produce larger leaves with fenestrations.

Cream-white markings sit on the elongated climbing form of Monstera lechleriana, with aerial roots, a sturdy vine and larger leaves forming on vertical growth.

Elongated variegated leaves of Monstera lechleriana

  • Leaf shape: Long green blades carry irregular cream to white variegation.
  • Growth habit: The plant forms a climbing vine with aerial roots along the stem.
  • Mature foliage: Supported growth can produce larger leaves with perforations.
  • Green tissue: Green sections contain chlorophyll, which is limited in cream or white sectors.

Variegation on a wet-forest climbing species

Monstera lechleriana is an accepted Araceae species native from Panama to Venezuela and Bolivia, where it grows as a climber in wet tropical forest. The variegated plant keeps the climbing habit of the species while adding irregular pale patterning across the leaves.

White and cream areas contain less chlorophyll than green tissue. Green sections need bright filtered light; direct midday sun can scorch cream sections quickly.

Care for green-and-white climbing growth

  • Light: Give bright filtered light; pale tissue burns more easily than green parts under direct sun.
  • Support: Train the vine upward so aerial roots can attach and later leaves can size up.
  • Watering: Water after the upper part of the substrate has dried, then let the pot drain completely.
  • Substrate: Use a coarse aroid mix with bark, coco chunks, and mineral drainage to protect root oxygen.
  • Pruning: Remove fully white weak growth if it cannot sustain itself, cutting back to a node with green tissue.
  • Temperature: Keep warm at about 18–28 °C and avoid cold windowsills or chilled substrate.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps new leaves open smoothly, especially on larger growth.
  • Fertilising: Use low-strength feed while the vine is making new leaves; flush between feeds if cream areas brown soon after fertilising.
  • Repotting: Step up after roots bind the mix, keeping the climbing stem tied so new aerial roots stay in contact.

Brown pale tissue and weak variegated shoots

  • Brown white patches: Check for direct sun, irregular watering, or fertiliser buildup in the substrate.
  • Weak pale stems: Keep shoots with enough green tissue for new leaf production.
  • Small new leaves: Review light, stem attachment, and root space; the vine may still be held in juvenile growth.
  • Yellowing after repotting: Inspect root damage and substrate density before increasing watering.

Ingestion safety

Monstera lechleriana variegata contains calcium oxalate crystals and can irritate the mouth and digestive tract if eaten. Keep it out of reach of pets and small children.

Monstera lechleriana species background

Monstera lechleriana was published by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1860 and belongs to the Araceae family. Cultivated variegated plants keep the species’ elongated climbing growth while adding irregular pale sectors, streaks and marbling.

On a vertical support, Monstera lechleriana variegata can produce the longer, larger leaves associated with mature Monstera vines.

Mostly happy
Color: Grape
Have a 1 1/2 yr old Belgian Malinois who needs things to do. I bought these and he loved it. Bad thing, it took him 1 day to chew the rope off both grape and pineapple. The stems on the cherry were also chewed off. The rest of the toy is intact and he still loves it.

Came apart.
Color: Cherries
We were playing with it and the green part pulled off of the red part. I'm pretty sure that is not supposed to happen. I took the green part away from the dog because that part is too small for my pup to play with. But we continue to play with the red part. My dog likes the texture and the bounciness.

Caution - handle comes off!
Color: Cherries
I really liked this toy when I opened package--our dog liked as well! Until a short time ago when I saw her chewing on the green "stem"! The stem had come apart from the main cherries. This is a small enough part that I think she or any bigger dog could choke on. Our dog is a small lab. Would not recommend buying.
