Origins and History

Kawanda Sorghum is an heirloom variety with roots in East Africa, particularly associated with agricultural research and farmer field trials in Uganda. The name derives from Kawanda, a major agricultural research station that has long contributed to developing and preserving traditional sorghum lines. This variety reflects the resilience of African foodways, as sorghum has been cultivated for thousands of years as a staple grain across the continent, valued for its adaptability to hot, dry climates and its cultural role in food, drink, and ritual.

Appearance and Characteristics

Kawanda Sorghum produces tall, sturdy stalks ranging from 6 to 10 feet in height. The plants are topped with large, loose panicles bearing dense clusters of small round seeds, typically ranging in color from pale cream to reddish-brown, depending on the strain. Known for its drought tolerance and ability to grow in marginal soils, this variety maintains strong stems that also provide fodder for livestock, making it a dual-purpose crop.

Culinary Uses

The grain of Kawanda Sorghum is versatile in the kitchen. It can be ground into flour for flatbreads, porridges, or traditional fermented foods. The whole grains may be steamed, boiled, or popped like popcorn. In East Africa, it is often used in brewing local beverages, contributing both flavor and nutrition. Gluten-free and highly nutritious, sorghum is increasingly recognized as a healthy alternative grain worldwide.

Growing Tips

Kawanda Sorghum thrives in warm climates and is best suited for USDA Zones 7–11. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating sandy or loamy ground. Sow seeds directly into the soil once temperatures are consistently above 65°F. Plant 1 inch deep, spacing seeds 4–6 inches apart in rows 24–36 inches apart. Thin seedlings as needed to prevent overcrowding. This sorghum variety is highly drought tolerant but benefits from moderate watering during establishment. It can also serve as a windbreak or companion crop due to its tall, strong stalks.

Harvesting Guidance

Sorghum is ready for harvest about 90–120 days after planting, depending on growing conditions. Grains are mature when the panicles turn dry and hard, and seeds resist denting when pressed. Harvest by cutting the seed heads and drying them thoroughly before threshing to remove the grain. For fodder use, stalks can be cut earlier while still green and succulent. Proper post-harvest drying ensures long-term storage and preserves seed quality for future planting.

This special dual-use sorghum is one of the sweetest-stalked sorghum varieties in the world. Officially known as 'L. 26 Kawanda', it tested in the top 5 overall for sucrose content in a USDA trial of 1,211 sorghums in the government collection (at 12.3% sucrose — most fall into the 2.75 to 5.5% range). The grains are beige-colored, mild-flavored, and easily hand-threshed. Plants are tall, productive, and resilient, but they do usually require a long season. These seeds were produced by our friend and colleague Amirah Mitchell, founder of Sistah Seeds, in Philadelphia — and we wouldn't recommend trying this variety much farther north than the Mid-Atlantic. But African sorghums like this can be unpredictable, seeming to be more dependent on rain patterns for determining flowering date than any other factor.

Many sorghums are listed in the government database as day-length sensitive, which usually means they won't begin to flower until too late in the season to produce seed in our region, but based on our experiences it's clear that many of these will produce seed early if there's a prolonged dry-spell in August — we presume this is because these sorghums have been adapted to the strict wet-season/dry-season dichotomy of their place of origin. So it's certainly worth trying farther north. And in some years it might not produce in the Mid-Atlantic or even the Southeast, so we strongly recommend never planting all of your seed.

We're hopeful that by making this exciting variety available, we'll learn more about it over the coming years. And perhaps some of you might use it to develop new varieties adapted to your particular location. The history of this sorghum is rather opaque. We know that it came into the USDA collection in May of 1952, donated by grain expert Orrin Webster of the University of Nebraska. He got it, along with many other sorghums, from Nigeria. The recorded name, 'L. 26 Kawanda', however, indicates that it came out of the Kawanda Agriculture Research Institute (KARI) outside Kampala, Uganda, which has long had a reputation as one of the most important agricultural research institutions on the African continent. Founded by the British imperial government in 1937 on a former rubber plantation, KARI's colonialist founders originally focused most of their attention on cash crops like coffee and cotton. But over the years, and especially after Uganda's independence in 1962, the focus shifted to more local priorities, like bananas, cassava, sweet potatoes, legumes, millet, and sorghum.

As a 2011 report by the World Academy of Sciences put it, "Research conducted on the hill in Kawanda has weathered Uganda’s turbulent political history to become a byword for quality African science." We have yet to find any information about the true origin of this sorghum, which our friends at the Experimental Farm Network, who introduced it to Amirah and to us, dubbed simply 'Kawanda', since 'L. 26 Kawanda' is such a mouthful, and no other sorghum variety currently bears the name 'Kawanda.' Old sources indicate that KARI mainly focused on plants collected in Uganda itself, or nearby Kenya and Tanzania, so we believe it's likely this variety originated in that region.

Love These Monitors - Nothing But Love/Performance Here!
First and foremost, yes these are the BEST budget CURVED monitors I felt deservers my time, effort and money. I've been into electronics and computers since the beginning of BBS's. Lol. I wanted to upgrade and bought the dual setup during Amazon day. Blew me away. Couple tips I'll share so that you can get the Most out of these monitors. Tips: 1 - Don't buy CRAP cables. DON'T. Look at the specs, the refresh rates and what they are capable of - speed!!!; 2 - Make sure you have a GOOD quality GPU. If not you won't even be able to enjoy the investment of the these monitors. Invest in a GPU of at LEAST 8GB 1080p min with BOTH DP and HDMI ports.; 3 - With that being said, these monitors use MST!! Daisy chain them together off the DP port for an AMAZING viewing pleasure. If not, you CAN you both ports. Run your main to from the DP port (WAY BETTER quality than the HDMI) and the other using the HDMI 1.2. Again, CABLES ARE IMPORTANT. Crap cables = degregaged signal/sound loss. 4 - When you get it/them make SURE your GPU drivers are up to date. Configure on your operating system and BOOM.. ready to rock. I researched PLENTY of options and I'm ESTACTIC about these. I believe the deal I got was UNREAL for the price, QHD monitors and almost ..almost everything I needed. 1440p - incredible. Ebay/AMZ for a GOOD GPU card and cables.. well worth your time.

Great value and great monitor
Size: 27"/QHD/200Hz
As a note to new buyers: a chemical-like odor may be emitted from your monitor's exhaust for the first 2-3 weeks--at least mine did. I did some research and this was likely attributed to some cleaning chemicals from the factory, and it is burning off from the heat of the monitor. Simply have good ventilation in your room, and the odor should dissipate in 2-3 weeks. I've had this monitor for over a year now, and there is no odor anymore. Now, for the actual review: This monitor is great quality for the price! Not perfect, as I've found this monitor doesn't display smooth gradients of dark very well. For example, when I'm in a dark room in a video game, the dark ambient colors show slightly pixelated rather than smoothly blended. Other than that, this monitor works like a charm! Colors are great, and monitor settings are easily adjustable. One complaint I have is that I can't change the monitor's brightness using the Windows OS' brightness settings--you have to change the brightness/contrast using the monitor's buttons.

A great value for a state of the art monitor.
I use two of these at my home work station. I am not a gamer, I use these mainly for working on multiple spread sheets and financial programs. The high pixel count of these 8k video displays makes it easy to read the screens. I have Windows 11 on my computer, so installation of the 3 monitors was easy. I have my computer monitor set at 150% and these two monitors set at 125% magnification. All three are at eye level. They came with display port cables which my computer and hubs do not have, so I in a 8K HDMI cable for each. I do play a few videos, and those look great. The curved screen helps in keeping all the monitor sort of equidistant from my eyes which helps everything on the 3 screens stay in focus for my 80 year old eyes. I have reflections on my computer screen, but both of these Koorui monitors are reflection free. I first went to Costco to pick up a monitor and this allowed me to zero in that I wanted the 8k and curved screen in a 24 or 27 inch monitor. They did not have that combination. I tried just one of the Koorui monitors along with my older monitor. The Koorui was so far superior that I quickly purchased the second one and tossed out my outdated one. I use these for hours each day, and at this low price I feel I can easily justify this investment. I feel secure these monitors will be with me for a long time.

This sucks.
Well i picked this up on sale for black friday and finally got around to installing my new video card, psu, extra ssd, and finally hooking up this new monitor. The new video card doesn't have a spot for the cable from my old 1080p monitor, so this is the only monitor i can use. It's christmas eve btw. Anyways the monitor fires up fine and looks great for about 6 hours of use. Then as i'm getting ready to boot up elden ring a big vertical magenta line of pixels appears on the right half of the screen, as well as a grey horizontal line of pixels. I didn't do anything before this happened, the monitor was sitting completely still on my desk. One second it worked the next i've got this line. I tested another cable, and while unplugging the displayport cable from the monitor the pink line stayed there as it was registering "no input." So it's definitely the monitor that's broken and not something wrong with my video card or software. I tried contacting technical support early in the morning and still haven't received anything at 5 pm. I realize it's christmas eve but I'm now stuck without a functioning monitor for probably my entire time off for christmas, and will have to pay return shipping, which soaks up all the money i saved getting it on sale. Over all i'm very unhappy with this purchase. edit: Koorui, the manufacturer, never got back to me about the broken monitor they sent me, so i contacted amazon and told them my situation. they told me they couldn't send a replacement because it wasn't available, even though you can order the exact monitor off amazon through prime right now. this order was a critical failure in service with both koorui and amazon. they can't seem to lift a finger for someone who paid them money for a product they sell. they want me to ship the monitor back, receive my money back, then purchase the same monitor for a higher price from them. I'm changing my review to 1 star and i would give 0 stars if i could. unbelievable. edit: ok i shipped the monitor back. they sent me a replacement monitor and this monitor also does not work. it doesn't turn on. i plugged it into both a surge protector and a power strip, then switched the cable and it doesn't turn on. i would be extremely wary of this company and their products. edit 2: by far my worst purchasing experience on amazon. with the second broken monitor they shipped me the support guy actually asked if i would take it to a tv repair shop. i told him we don't have that in the united states and returned the item for a full refund. they got to keep my $150 for about 3 months though. these people should not be allowed to sell on amazon.
