There’s something timeless about Zamia furfuracea, better known as the Cardboard Palm. With its thick, paddle-shaped leaves and bold, sculptural form, it’s the kind of plant that instantly draws the eye. It has a prehistoric feel to it, and for good reason—this isn’t actually a palm at all, but a cycad, a family of plants that have been around since the time of the dinosaurs.

The first thing you’ll notice about this plant is its unusual texture. The leaves aren’t glossy like many tropical plants—instead, they have a slightly rough, almost felt-like surface, earning the name "Cardboard Palm." They grow in a neat, arching pattern, emerging from a sturdy central base, creating a structured, architectural look that works beautifully in modern or minimal interiors.

This is one of the easiest statement plants to care for. It thrives on neglect, stores water in its thick roots, and is perfectly happy with the occasional dry spell. If you’re after something that looks dramatic but doesn’t demand much attention, this is a perfect choice.

Zamia furfuracea Size

  • Pot size: 19cm
  • Height: Approx. 70cm tall (with potential for slow but steady growth)
  • Shape: Compact, structured form with outward-arching leaves

Native Habitat and Growth Patterns

Native to the coastal regions of Mexico, Zamia furfuracea thrives in sandy, well-draining soil and is adapted to store water in its thick, underground caudex. This makes it an excellent choice for homes where watering is sometimes forgotten!

Its tough, slightly fuzzy leaves are an adaptation to intense sun and dry conditions. Over time, the plant develops a stout, woody trunk, adding even more character.

How to Style the Cardboard Palm at Home

Zamia furfuracea is a sculptural statement plant that works well in minimalist, modern, or tropical-inspired interiors. Its upright, arching foliage creates a bold focal point, whether displayed on its own or grouped with other structural plants like Dracaena Draco (Dragon Tree) or Cycas Revoluta (Sago Palm).

  • For a sleek, contemporary look: Pair it with a black or stone-finish planter.
  • For a natural, earthy feel: Choose a textured terracotta or ceramic pot to complement its rugged charm.
  • Ideal for living rooms, offices, or bright hallways where its striking form can be fully appreciated.

Zamia furfuracea Care Requirements – Low Maintenance & Drought-Tolerant

Zamia furfuracea is incredibly easy to care for, making it a great choice for plant lovers of all experience levels.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sun. Low light will slow its already gradual growth.
  • Watering: Drought-tolerant—allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the biggest risk!
  • Humidity: Not fussy—adapts to most home environments.
  • Temperature: Prefers warm conditions (avoid temperatures below 10°C).
  • Feeding: Feed monthly in spring & summer with a balanced fertiliser. We recommend our Organic Tropical Plant Food to support healthy growth.

Why Choose Zamia Furfuracea?

  • Low-maintenance & resilient – Perfect for those who want a tough, long-lived plant.
  • Drought-tolerant – Stores water in its thick trunk and leaves, meaning less frequent watering.
  • Unique prehistoric charm – A rare find with a bold, architectural presence.
  • Perfect for beginners & collectors alike – Grows slowly, requiring little attention but making a big impact.

Interesting Facts About Zamia Furfuracea

  • Not actually a palm—it belongs to the ancient cycad family.
  • Its thick, leathery leaves are slightly fuzzy to the touch, like fine sandpaper.
  • One of the oldest plant species on Earth, dating back to the time of dinosaurs!

good spray, but strong alcohol smell
Style: SPF 50, Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I like Alba Botanica, but 3.5 starts since: - the spray goes way too fast (that can be true for all continuous sprays). I used it 4 - 5 times and it seems I have very little left. - lots of waste when spraying... probably is best to spray your palm and then massage it on your body - once it's sprayed it smells like alcohol, alot!!! Other brands I tried don't seem to smell so much of alcohol. - My kid developed strange rash once it was applied, not red dots, but white bumps all over the arms and legs, cannot say its from this spray, but I'm a bit suspicious. The good party it's it is not sticky or greasy. Smells good (after alcohol evaporates). I used it a couple of times, applied once only and stay several hours under the sun and I was fine, no sunburn.

Alba packaging stinks
Style: SPF 50, Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Complete waste of money! I ended up tossing it out because it’s IMPOSSIBLE to use. You should be able to twist the top to lock/unlock and spray it. NOPE. The top just spins and doesn’t catch or you cannot twist it at all. It’s also virtually impossible to spray. I had to hold it against my torso and press with both thumbs to get it to spray. Meanwhile, it’s leaking, the bottle is getting slippery. And then the spray goes EVERYWHERE, it’s not a narrow spray but it’s as if you’re dusting crops. I tried to see if it needed a certain pressure point, two fingers, bloody hell it’s not a Magic Mouse you should be able to unlock and spray it with one hand. Anyway, Alba needs to do some QC on their packaging. The last pump lotion I got, the pump also did not work. It just spun and spun and could not be unlocked. I had to wash and reuse the pump from an old bottle.

Best sunscreen brand! Fair, sensitive-skinned and rely on this
Style: SPF 50, Size: 5 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Alba Botanica is my favorite brand for sunscreen products and it checks all the boxes on my list: Excellent long lasting coverage, fine mist spray and easy coverage cream versions, great for my sensitive skin (no breakouts- I do NOT use it on my face though), the Hawaiian fragrance is pleasant, it’s reef safe (a big one for me as a snorkel/dive aficionado), and organic ingredients. The large size lasts 5 full days when on a boat all day in the Carribbean, and I only apply it twice (once in morning, and again midday.) I have fair skin, and I never burn. The spray version is, by nature of its aerosol capacity, a bit drying on the skin, but this is to be expected, and it creates a long lasting barrier. The cream version is a wonderful emollient, although not quite as long lasting. Best deal is only in the summer season at CostCo for a 2 pack... in my searches, Amazon has the best deal otherwise.
