Little Rev Flax Lily Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Borders, Edging, and Tight Spaces

Little Rev's compact, upright form makes it the go-to choice when you need a clean, structured border plant that stays exactly where you put it. Unlike larger ornamental grasses that sprawl and flop, Little Rev maintains a neat, architectural silhouette all year long without any trimming. Use it along walkways, driveways, and bed edges throughout Scottsdale, Mesa, and Glendale at 12–18 inch spacing for a refined, polished look. It's one of the few plants that looks just as good as a single accent as it does in a long, linear row.

Pool-Friendly Accent Planting

Little Rev Flax Lily is an excellent pool-safe option for Phoenix backyards. It produces no thorns, no heavy leaf drop, and its compact clumping form keeps pool edges tidy and attractive year-round. The blue-green foliage adds clean color contrast against pool coping, concrete, and travertine decking — and its small size means it never overhangs or drops debris into the water. Plant 15–18 inches from pool coping edges for the best visual effect without overcrowding the space.

Modern Desert and Minimalist Designs

The upright, disciplined form of Little Rev Flax Lily is perfectly suited to the clean lines of contemporary Phoenix home designs. Its fine texture and blue-green foliage contrast beautifully with decomposed granite, concrete, and natural stone — creating a sophisticated, low-maintenance palette popular in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley landscapes. Pair it with Agave, Desert Spoon, or Mexican Thread Grass for a design that is bold, textural, and undeniably modern.

Mass Planting and Groundcover

When planted in masses, Little Rev creates a dense, weed-suppressing groundcover that requires almost no maintenance once established. Space plants 12–15 inches apart for a tight, uniform groundcover; 15–18 inches for a more open, naturalistic look. It fills in steadily over 2–3 seasons in Phoenix and holds its tidy form without pruning. Its deep root system also makes it excellent for gentle slope stabilization in Phoenix's occasional winter rain events.

Best Time to Plant Little Rev Flax Lily in Phoenix

Fall planting (October–November) is ideal in Phoenix — warm soil drives root establishment while cooler air temperatures minimize transplant stress. Plants get 6–8 months of root development before their first Phoenix summer. Spring (February–April) is your second-best planting window. Avoid planting in peak summer heat (June–August) if possible — if you must plant in summer, provide afternoon shade cloth and water deeply every 1–2 days for the first 3–4 weeks to prevent leaf scorch and root failure.

How to Plant Little Rev Flax Lily

  1. Dig wide, not deep — Make the hole 2x the width of the root ball at the same depth. Crown should sit level with the surrounding soil, not buried deeper.
  2. Check for caliche — Break through any hardpan layer beneath the hole. Dianella revoluta is sensitive to standing water around its crown — good drainage is essential in Phoenix soils.
  3. Amend lightly — Mix 20% compost or organic amendment into native backfill. Little Rev prefers moderately lean, well-draining soil — avoid heavy composting.
  4. Spacing — Space 12–15 inches apart for borders and groundcover; 15–18 inches apart for individual accents or poolside planting.
  5. Build a water basin — Create a 2–3 inch earthen ring to direct water to the root zone during the establishment period.
  6. Mulch — Apply 2–3 inches of bark or gravel mulch to retain moisture and moderate soil temperature through Phoenix summers.

Watering Little Rev Flax Lily in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

  • Weeks 1–2: Every 1–2 days, deep and slow (15–25 minutes per session)
  • Months 1–2: Every 3–4 days as roots begin establishing
  • Months 3–6: Every 7–10 days (every 5–7 days during peak summer heat)
  • After Year 1: Every 10–14 days in summer; every 3–4 weeks in winter

Drip Irrigation

Place drip emitters 10–12 inches from the plant crown for establishment. A 1 GPH emitter running 20–30 minutes per session is appropriate for most Phoenix conditions. For mass plantings, use a grid of emitters spaced 12 inches apart throughout the planting area. Once fully established, Little Rev is one of the most water-efficient accent plants available for Phoenix landscapes — requiring minimal supplemental irrigation after the first full growing season.

How fast does Little Rev Flax Lily grow in Phoenix?
Expect moderate growth of 6–10 inches per season in Phoenix's long warm period. Individual clumps reach their mature size of 1–1.5 feet within 2–3 growing seasons. Mass plantings fill in noticeably each spring, especially with consistent drip irrigation during establishment.

Is Little Rev Flax Lily drought tolerant once established?
Yes — it's highly drought-tolerant after the first full growing season in Phoenix. Once the root system is established, Little Rev can handle extended dry periods with very minimal supplemental irrigation, making it ideal for low-water landscapes and water-wise redesigns throughout the Phoenix metro.

Does Little Rev Flax Lily work near pools in Phoenix?
Absolutely — it's pool-safe, spineless, and produces minimal litter. Its compact size keeps pool edges clean and its blue-green foliage provides year-round color contrast against pool decking. It's one of the most popular pool-border plants at Three Timbers for a reason.

Does it flower in Phoenix?
Yes — Little Rev produces small but charming blue-to-purple star-shaped flowers on branching stems in spring to early summer (typically April–June in Phoenix). After flowering, small decorative berries follow in summer and fall, adding further seasonal interest to the plant.

How does Little Rev compare to Variegated Flax Lily?
Little Rev is significantly more compact (1–1.5 ft vs 2–2.5 ft) and features solid blue-green foliage rather than variegated cream-and-green leaves. Little Rev is the better choice for tight borders, edging, and refined contemporary designs where precise scale matters. Variegated Flax Lily offers more visual drama and works better as a standalone accent or larger border plant.

You May Also Like

  • Variegated Flax Lily — A larger sibling with bold cream-and-green variegated foliage and violet-blue flowers, perfect for adjacent planting to create a layered texture effect.
  • Silvery Sunproof Liriope — A similarly compact, variegated grass-like groundcover with lavender blooms and excellent sun tolerance for Phoenix landscapes.
  • Giant Lily Turf — A bolder, larger option for mass groundcover planting in shaded or semi-shaded areas alongside Little Rev accent groupings.
  • Bicolor Iris — A yellow-and-white blooming accent plant with strap leaves that provides excellent color contrast planted alongside Little Rev.
  • Mexican Thread Grass — An ultra-fine-textured ornamental grass that creates a beautiful soft foil against Little Rev's upright, structured form.

How Many Little Rev Flax Lily Do I Need?

At a mature width of 1 to 2 feet, Little Rev is planted on 12 to 15-inch centers for a tight border or groundcover and 15 to 18-inch centers for spaced accents. Use this guide to size an order:

Planting Plants at 12 in spacing Plants at 18 in spacing
Single-row border (per 10 ft) 10 7
25 sq ft mass 25 11
50 sq ft mass 50 22
100 sq ft mass 100 44

For a single specimen accent or a poolside grouping, set plants 15 to 18 inches apart so each clump keeps its clean upright form.

Little Rev Flax Lily Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb-Apr): Blue-to-purple star flowers open on branching stems and fresh blade growth flushes. The best second planting window of the year.
  • Summer (May-Sep): Holds its tidy blue-green form through the heat. It takes full sun and reflected heat, though in the hottest west-facing exposures a little afternoon shade keeps the foliage from fading. Decorative berries follow the spring bloom.
  • Fall (Oct-Nov): Prime planting and dividing season. Cooler nights bring renewed vigor and steady fill-in for mass plantings.
  • Winter (Dec-Jan): Evergreen and dependable through Valley winters. Cold-hardy to about 20°F, so it holds its structure with no frost protection in Phoenix.

Plant It With

  • Variegated Flax Lily: its larger cream-and-green sibling for a layered, two-tone strappy planting.
  • Silvery Sunproof Liriope: a similar compact variegated grass-like form with lavender bloom and strong sun tolerance.
  • Giant Lily Turf: a bolder, larger clumping groundcover to mass behind Little Rev accent groups.
  • Desert Spoon: a sculptural native anchor whose silver rosette plays off Little Rev's fine blue-green blades.

Is Little Rev Flax Lily Right for Your Yard?

Little Rev thrives in full sun to partial shade on well-drained soil, holding a neat upright clump for borders, pool edges, tight contemporary spaces, and low-water mass plantings across the Valley. It takes reflected heat and is cold-hardy through Phoenix winters. It is not a fit if you have a poorly drained spot that stays wet around the crown, since Dianella resents standing water and can rot in soggy caliche pockets.

Excellent product at a very good price. I will buy it again.
This is an excellent product at a fair price. The cream creates a barrier that protects the skin, while mosturizes it. leaves hands very soft, and it doesn't feel greasy. I know that this is a favorite brand (Avene) in France, and Amazon offers it at a very good price. I will buy it again, from Amazon. I bought it this year in Paris, and it was more expensive there.

Drying formula and smell bad
Smell so bad and made my hands dry instead of moisturizing. The formula is watery. Maybe it’s fake or expired I am not sure.

Obsessed. Soothing, effective, fragrance-free, incredibly healing
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I’ve been loving this so much I bought a second bottle after a few days of using it. It has all the skin soothing benefits of the tolerance lotion cleanser, but it’s also a really great cleanser. It’s almost not noticeable how good it is at cleansing because your skin doesn’t feel stripped after, but it takes things off really quickly. I was worried because it doesn’t foam a lot and it feels so nurturing — much like the tolerance lotion cleanser (which I use as a second cleanse when my skin needs a few days to recover from something like a derm office treatment) — but when I wash again with my favorite HG cleanser nothing extra comes off, and I tested it twice on waterproof eyeliner that I’d swiped on my forearm for an hour or so, the eyeliner dissolved and wiped off with two or three gentle swipes. It has a very emollient texture, so when you rub it against your skin it slips so easily you don’t realize it’s dissolving and taking things away because there is no friction. So it’s great at taking off makeup, it’s AMAZING at cleaning makeup brushes, and IT DOES NOT BURN MY EYES AT ALL. Also, it is FRAGRANCE-FREE… before I bought it I read a review complaining about smelling a citrus fragrance, that person either has some sort of brain tumor or something spilled on their bottle when it was in a warehouse because this is definitely a fragrance-free product. Prior to trying this, I had tried another cleanser that gave me weird acne hives all over my chest (never happened to me before) and I was struggling to heal the acne and the irritation. I noticed an immediate difference when I started using the tolerance cleanser on it; the fresh redness went away, the acne started healing, and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been healing fast. So I’ve been using this on my body as well and it’s soothing and moisturizing in all the places where other things have been drying. I have mild rosacea and I hadn’t realized how irritated my skin was from the last thing I’d tried until after 5 days or so of using this my skin tone looked much more even and the stubborn PIH I have from a two-zit hormonal breakout a month ago finally looked dramatically lighter (as recently as the week before, I’d needed to cover them with high-coverage concealer). Because this doesn’t foam much, some people might not realize how well it’s cleaning… I encourage you to judge it based on how your skin looks and feels. Since it is very emollient though, I do think it’s important to use it with a face wash scrubber or washcloth just to ensure you’re getting some mild mechanical exfoliation and clearing away skin cells that could be trapping stuff in your pores. For this reason, I do wash my face with this twice so the first wash can get off makeup/debris/oil and then the second wash can really penetrate and clean my skin.

No Scent and Gentle
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I broke out in a case of Perioral Dermatitis recently and bought this product to help before I could see my doctor. Avene Tolerance facial cleanser has no scent and is very gentle on my skin. It didn’t burn when washing with this product, and even helped to slough off the dead skin around my lips. My face feels clean, not dry. I am still going to see my doc to get an RX for the inflammation, but I do believe this product helped to alleviate the dryness and tightness of my skin and lips. I’ve used other Avene products and I’m very happy with them. Even though these products are more expensive, to me they are well worth the money because they are much more gentle on the skin than any other products I’ve used. I will buy this product again just because of the fact that it’s so gentle. PS: at the time of purchase for this product, I also bought Avene’s Tolerance Control Skin Recovery Cream (you don’t need to use a lot of this one on your entire face), and Avene’s Cicalfate for lips. Between these 3 products, my lips and skin feel a lot better (however, I will still see my doctor because I have Crohn’s Disease and Perioral Dermatitis is considered an extra-intestinal side effect of Crohn’s).

Gentle everyday cleanser!
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
My go to nightly cleanser! Gentle yet effective. Removes makeup without leaving any residue behind. Also does not dry out my skin or cause breakouts! I would say it’s more of a cream cleanser though. It does not really foam up. It’s a decent size bottle for the price. The pump dispenser is an added plus!
