The Haworthiopsis limifolia, also known as Fairy Washboard, is a perennial houseplant that will sweep you off your feet with its enchanting beauty and low-maintenance nature! The specific epithet "limifolia" refers to the transverse ridges on the leaves and means file-like leaves, so the plant is also known as File-Leaved Haworthia.

Haworthiopsis limifolia is a small succulent plant with fleshy leaves that are dark green or even brownish green in color and covered in raised white stripes.

The stripes on the leaves are arranged in a distinctive pattern resembling the ridges of an old-fashioned washboard, which is why it is fondly called a "fairy washboard."

Native to South Africa, this indoor plant can grow up to 6 inches tall and wide, with its captivating rosette that is known for its slow production of offsets around the base, creating a dense clump fit for any fairy kingdom.

The flowers of Haworthia plant are small and white on long stalks that emerge from the center of the rosette during late summer and fall. The flowers are tubular in shape and have a sweet fragrance that is attractive to pollinators.

When and How to Water Your Fairy Washboard

Haworthiopsis limifolia is a low-maintenance succulent that does not require frequent watering. It is important to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent the roots from rotting. Overwatering can be harmful to the Haworthia plant, so it's best to err on the side of underwatering.

In the spring and summer, during its active growth period, this Haworthia succulent once every two or three weeks. Additionally, watering should be done once a month when it is dormant in the winter.

The frequency of watering may depend on the growing conditions and the type of soil the succulent is growing in. It is always a good idea to check the soil moisture level before watering to ensure that the fairy plant is not being overwatered.

Light Requirements - Where to Place Your Haworthiopsis limifolia

When growing indoors, Haworthiopsis limifolia thrives in bright, indirect light when grown indoors. Place it near a north- or east-facing window where it can receive 4 to 6 hours of soft, filtered sunlight each day. Avoid direct afternoon sun, as it can scorch the leaves. If natural light is limited, consider using a grow light to maintain its health and encourage consistent growth.

For outdoor cultivation, Haworthiopsis limifolia prefers a shaded or partially shaded spot. It can tolerate morning sunlight for about 2 to 4 hours, but it is essential to shield it from intense midday or afternoon sun to prevent leaf damage.

In climates with mild temperatures, place it under a covered patio, shaded garden area, or near other taller plants that provide natural protection. This balance of light allows the plant to flourish while maintaining its lush, textured appearance.

If this Haworthiopsis is placed in direct sunlight, the leaves may become scorched or discolored. If it is not receiving enough light, the leaves may become pale or yellow. If this happens, it may be necessary to move this Haworthia succulent to a brighter location.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The Haworthia succulents favor very airy, sandy soil that drains well. Planting them in ordinary soil will result in compacted roots, stunted growth, and, most likely, root rot. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally, use our specialized succulent potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your succulent to thrive.

100% natural fertilizers with an equal mix of NPK (5-10-50) are the best choice as they last longer and keep your soil alive by adding other beneficial compounds and microbes that encourage Haworthiopsis limifolia health and nutrient absorption. So, skip those harsh chemicals and give your Haworthia succulent some love with a good natural fertilizer!

Hardiness Zones & More

When growing indoors, this plant thrives in bright, indirect light and requires a warm temperature range of 65–80°F, which is ideal for most home environments. Haworthiopsis limifolia is native to arid regions and cannot tolerate excessive moisture, so maintaining low to moderate humidity is essential. To avoid rot, keep it out of damp or poorly ventilated areas.

For outdoor cultivation, Haworthiopsis limifolia thrives in USDA hardiness zones 10–11, only in specific regions like southern Florida and Hawaii, where the warm, tropical climate matches its needs.

These Haworthia succulents are also tolerant of low humidity levels and do not require a lot of moisture in the air to thrive.

It thrives in warm climates and can handle temperatures as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit for short periods. However, it's important to protect your Haworthia succulent tree from frost and freezing temperatures, as prolonged exposure can cause damage or even kill the succulent.

Haworthiopsis limifolia is a charming succulent that can attract friendly pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects to your garden or indoor space. These pollinators play a crucial role in supporting ecosystems and enhancing the natural beauty of your surroundings.

How to Propagate Your Haworthiopsis limifolia

Haworthiopsis limifolia can be easily propagated through offsets or leaf cuttings, with offsets being the most reliable method. Mature plants produce small pups around the base, which can be gently separated from the parent plant, ensuring they have some roots attached. Allow the offsets to dry for a day to form a protective callus before planting them in well-draining succulent soil. For leaf cuttings, select a healthy leaf, cut it near the base, and let it dry for a day or two before planting it in slightly moist soil. Place the new plants in bright, indirect light and water sparingly to encourage root growth. While propagation takes time due to the slow-growing nature of this succulent, patience and proper care will yield healthy, thriving plants.

If your dog pops with his canines and shreds with his front teeth, this is for you. I have nothing but praise for this toy.
Size: One Size, Style: Bumpy Ball
This is one of the few balls I have purchased that my dog does not destroy. I am surprised at the negative reviews here and have been doing some thinking about why one dog destroys this ball and another does not. Perhaps it is the type of chewer we own? Or because he has a narrow jaw rather than a broad one like a pit bull? My Airedale Terrier likes to shred, preferring to use his back teeth to pop or crush and front teeth to pull apart tennis balls, stuffed animals and the like. I don't know if that will help anyone in making the decision to buy or not to buy this toy. The ball has many dimples where my dog's teeth have sunk in but he has yet to take a chunk out of it. I bought two of these from Marshall's three or four months ago and I play with my dog twice a day, so lots of use here. After I realized what I'd found I promptly ordered two more from Amazon because I wanted to insure I would have them around for a long time. All I can say is that this toy has been a lifesaver for me. My extremely active one year old Airedale Terrier needs a lot of exercise and this ball satisfied that need for us. It is fun for him and I giggle at his antics as he attempts to follow the unpredictable path of the bumble ball. I throw the ball for him from my porch, trying to toss it so it goes over our truck, which my husband leaves in the driveway. If the ball hits the truck, no harm done and more unpredictable for my boy! I can toss the ball around the house without worrying it will break a window. My dog loves to pick up toys and throw them in the air when he plays. He tossed a marrow bone into the air and when it landed I had a nice half inch gash in our coffee table. No more marrow bones in the house for him. I have nothing but praise for this toy and am grateful to have found it.

Great Toy
Size: One Size, Style: Stick
I breed German shepherds. This toy is a soft formed stick made of a memory foam/ rubber polymer. It’s light weight, very durable, floats and my German Shepherds love retrieving this toy. They are not indestructible but they are a great chewing toy for their price. I usually buy several at a time. This toy will help clean their teeth and is soft enough not to damage their teeth. It’s a favorite item for my dogs.

SPECTACULAR dog chew toy!
Size: One Size, Style: Ball
If you look at my profile, you will see that I have bought and reviewed a LOT of dog toys! My boxer is an "aggressive" chewer and we go through dog toys quickly in my house. This has been one of my very favorite chew toys that I have ever purchased. This company sells quite a few of these chew toys in different shapes. This ball is made from a very light foam rubber (I think) material. When I showed it to my husband, he said "that won't last 5 minutes" and I had my doubts too. However, this ball has proven to be EXTREMELY durable! Because it is made from the foam material, it has a lot of tooth sized holes in it after she chews it, but she has been unable to chew the toy apart. I bought another of these chew toys made from the same material in a different shape thinking surely there was some accident that the toy had held up for so long. Nope, the new toy has held up just as well! The toys float in water and are very light and easy to throw. Overall, I will be buying more of these toys and would recommend this product!

Didn't last one day.
Size: Large, Style: Duck Slingshot, Size: Large, Style: Duck Slingshot
Didn't last even an hour. This damage wasn't from the dog either, it looks like it let loose from the stress of just trying to launch it! It doesn't fly near as far as the discontinued Pig Slingshot toy. Bring back the pig, please. I also ordered the other listed Hyper Pet flying fowl, and it flew the same distance as this one, and has lasted through the day (but needs to be heavier). But for this one, perhaps they needed to double stitch the area under the 'chin'? I'll try to return it. It looks like it should be more durable, but at least that part isn't. Second one: I chose the replacement, instead of a refund because my dog loves me shooting the toys into the yard. He saw the new duck, and was excited. Six shots in and the seam on the bottom of the head was already separating. By 10 or so times, it was getting concerning as the seams were opening enough I was concerned that it would lose its filling. I'm disappointed, and so is my dog. Just in case anyone is wondering, I never let him alone with this, and still feel, even more so, that the failure is the stitching on the bottom of the head, right at the point where the most stresses of launching it are focused. I'd strongly recommend that Hyper Pet use two layers of full canvas over that area, and also Bring Back The Slingshot Pig, PLEASE... The second picture is the second Duck, and my 7 month old. He wasn't ready to end the session. The problem, for us, is that the 'dog run' isn't very long, and all of the other toys I have are bazooka style launching devices that I can't use yet as they would fly far over the fence. Ironically one is from Hyper Pet, and is amazing. Works so well. Too well?

Not for labrador chewing.
Size: One Size, Style: Stick, Size: One Size, Style: Stick
Not recommended for a Labrador if they enjoy retrieving then chewing, because the stick will only last 20-30mins. The stick does float, and is hollow which is good when it’s been bitten down to ball size.
