Golden Delicious Pineapple Sage (Salvia elegans 'Golden Delicious')

Golden Delicious Pineapple Sage is grown for its bright, golden foliage that instantly lifts a planting and makes nearby colors look richer. It adds height and a full, leafy presence in beds and large containers, so designs feel more finished without extra filler plants. When the weather shifts toward fall, it often adds a bonus show of scarlet red flowers that draw hummingbirds and keep the garden active late in the season. Brush the leaves as you pass and you will notice the signature pineapple fragrance that makes this plant feel special up close.

Distinctive Features

This tender, shrubby sage forms an upright clump of softly hairy, aromatic foliage that emerges bright gold to chartreuse and can shift greener as it matures, especially in heat or shade. In late summer into fall, terminal spikes open with vivid scarlet red, tubular flowers that are especially attractive to hummingbirds. The overall look is bold but not stiff, with stems that branch and fill space quickly over the growing season. Mature size is typically about 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide in the ground, and often smaller in containers depending on season length and pruning.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade, with afternoon shade helpful in hotter climates to keep foliage looking its best.
  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil is ideal, and avoid persistently wet sites.
  • Water: Provide regular water to establish, then maintain moderate moisture, watering during prolonged heat and dry spells.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in zones 8 to 11, and commonly grown as an annual outside that range.
  • Mature Size: About 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, with size influenced by pruning and container culture.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use one bold clump as a focal point where the golden foliage can brighten a key view all season and finish with red blooms in fall.
  • Mixed Borders: Place in the middle to back of beds to add height, contrast, and a lush seasonal backdrop.
  • Pollinator Plantings: Include for late-season hummingbird value when many nectar plants are slowing down.
  • Large Containers: Grow as a tall container accent that adds color and fragrance near patios and entries.
  • Herb and Sensory Gardens: Plant near paths where the pineapple-scented leaves can be enjoyed as you brush past.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pinching: Pinch or tip-prune early in the season to encourage branching and a fuller, sturdier plant.
  • Deadheading: Trim spent flower spikes to keep the plant tidy and encourage continued blooming.
  • Watering: Water deeply during heat and drought, especially in containers, to prevent stress and leaf drop.
  • Pruning: Cut back lightly as needed to maintain shape, and do harder pruning in spring where it overwinters.
  • Overwintering: In colder zones, grow in a container and move to a bright, protected space before hard frost.

Why Choose Golden Delicious Pineapple Sage?

  • High-Impact Foliage: Golden leaves add instant brightness and contrast that improves the look of nearby plantings.
  • Late-Season Flowers: Scarlet red blooms extend seasonal interest into late summer and fall.
  • Hummingbird Magnet: Tubular flowers are a reliable nectar source that pulls hummingbirds into the garden.
  • Fragrant Experience: Pineapple-scented foliage adds a sensory element that feels special near walkways.
  • Design Versatility: Works as a tall bed accent or a container centerpiece with simple, straightforward care.

If you want bright foliage, late-season color, and hummingbird activity in one easy plant, Golden Delicious Pineapple Sage is a strong choice. Give it sun, good drainage, and consistent moisture, then pinch early and trim as needed to keep it full and attractive. Used as a statement accent or repeated for rhythm, it brings a warm, lifted look that carries the garden into fall.

Good Start for X-men from the Ashes
Format: Kindle
The art is different than previous issues and takes a little getting used to, but overall above par. With comics, it’s always about the art first, the writing second. The dialogue pops for the most part. And the characters make sense. I rather like the scenes between Cyke and Logan, Hank and Cyke, and Magneto. Also it makes sense that after being tortured and put through hell - Cyclops would retreat to his birthplace, Alaska, and take the mutants who can’t blend in with humans, or are ostracized with him. The team up works for me - we have people who are deadly, former assassins and villains, which again works well with Cyclops, a character who believes in second chances. Only quibble - is the villains feel kind of stale? I was never a fan of the U-Men. But I’ll give it a chance, the rest is working for me so far.

Fun new start
Format: Kindle
I really enjoyed this first issue. The team's dynamics seem to be getting a lot of focus which I like. And the action jumps out of the page. The character designs will take some getting used to but the art is honestly fantastic. Most enjoyable part to me was the team actually feeling like a team, with lots of small interplays and Cyclops really feeling like the leader he should be. I'm not sure I like Orchis as the villains again but we'll see how it goes.

Great new beginning
Format: Kindle
I didn't really care for the Krakoan era as a whole, and knowing how comics, especially the X-Men, go through cycles every few years, knew it wouldn't last. I'm especially glad to see the somewhat bland logos go and the classic ones return. I like this line up so far, especially the inclusion of the Juggernaut. I remember reading the comics years ago when he first switched sides, and was.disappointed when he went back to being bad. I haven't read the concluding chapters of the Krakoan era yet, so seeing a "classic" version of the Beast is a little surprising since the last time I saw him he had turned into an evil piece of %#@+. The story by Jed MacKay was interesting and entertaining, as I knew it would be. I've always enjoyed Ryan Stegman's art. Looking forward to more of this series and the other X-Men books, especially Uncanny X-Men.

More of the same
Format: Kindle
I haven’t read X-Men comics in years, but decided to dive back in as a supplement to all the Marvel Cinematic buzz. The plot seems like standard X-Men fare. The weakness of the comic medium, particularly for characters like the X-Men, is the holding pattern of the status quo that the characters are constantly suck in. I’m not sure if this series will deliver a clever twist on it yet. The dynamic they are setting up with the downtrodden Sentinel manufacturing town is interesting, as is the implicit aspiration of the X-Men to replenish the land itself. I am enjoying the team composition and the gorgeous art. They decided to crucify Wolverine again and it looked cool as ever. Juggernaut’s costume, too, is incredibly drawn.

This story hits all the right notes for a 1st issue, with new mysteries and new characters. Love the team, with stalwarts like Beast, Wolverine, and Cyclops. Looking forward to more!
