Germination ~ 83% Oct 2024 Packed for 2025

This mustard is almost as ornamental as it is delicious! Originating in East Asia, 'Red Giant' is robust and beautiful. The base-color of its leaves is green, but they are shaded with a deep purple hue that no doubt adds to the healthy antioxidant levels of this variety. The appearance is predominately reddish-purple with an undercoat of deep green. Good cold tolerance and strong mustard flavor.

Leaves are relatively thin and very tender when steamed or sautéed. Its mildly spicy flavor, reminiscent of horseradish, adds a pleasant zing to any meal. It's extremely easy to grow, and matures fast compared to other mustards. Cooler temperatures mellow-out its flavor, while sun and heat intensify it. Can last well into late fall or winter in warmer areas.

Mustard Greens are leafy vegetables from the Brassica family, closely related to cabbage, kale, and collard greens. They have a peppery, slightly spicy flavor, which can vary in intensity depending on the variety and how they are grown. Mustard greens are commonly used in Southern, Asian, and Mediterranean cuisines, often cooked or added to salads for a bold, tangy flavor. Growing mustard greens is rewarding for both their nutritional value and flavor! They’re packed with vitamins A, C, and K, along with calcium and antioxidants.

There are several varieties of Mustard Greens:

  • Curled Leaf Mustard: Has deeply frilled leaves with a spicy flavor.
  • Giant Red Mustard: Large, reddish-purple leaves with a strong mustard taste.
  • Tendergreen Mustard: Milder and often smoother in texture.
  • Mizuna: A Japanese variety with feathery leaves and a milder taste.

Growing Mustard Greens:

Mustard greens are cool-season crops that are relatively easy to grow and thrive in spring and fall when temperatures are moderate. Mustard greens prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Choose a well-drained area with fertile soil, rich in organic matter. Mustard greens do best in cooler weather. In hot weather, they can bolt (go to seed) and become bitter. Companion planting with herbs or flowers like marigolds can help deter pests.

Soil Preparation: Ideal pH: 6.0 to 7.5. Add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil. Mustard greens thrive in loose, well-draining soil. Make sure to till the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.

Planting: If you Direct Sow plant the seeds directly in the garden about 4-6 weeks before the last frost in spring or 6-8 weeks before the first frost in fall.  Sow seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, spacing them 3 to 6 inches apart. Thin seedlings to 6-8 inches apart once they sprout. For larger leaves, space them further apart.

Watering & Fertilization: Keep the soil evenly moist. Mustard greens grow best with about 1 inch of water per week. Mulching around the plants helps retain moisture and keep the soil cool. Mustard greens are heavy feeders. You can side-dress with nitrogen-rich fertilizer after plants are established to encourage healthy leaf growth. A balanced, organic fertilizer can also be used before planting to improve soil fertility.

Care and Maintenance: Common pests include aphids, flea beetles, and cabbage loopers. Use organic pest controls, like neem oil or row covers, to protect the plants. Regular weeding helps keep competition for nutrients low, allowing your mustard greens to flourish.

Harvesting:  You can begin harvesting mustard greens as soon as the leaves are large enough to eat, usually 30-40 days after planting. Cut outer leaves first, leaving the center of the plant to continue growing. Younger leaves are milder in flavor, while older leaves are spicier. For a continual harvest, plant new seeds every few weeks.

Amazing!
Format: Kindle, Format: Kindle
This book was phenomenal, I devoured it within a few days! For this being a debut novel, it is fantastic and I would’ve thought the author was a seasoned author. I have zero complaints about this book. Let me start by saying that the world building was phenomenal. I could picture everything in my head because of how detailed it was — that’s how good it was written. And I absolutely love the “captive/captor” trope so much, it’s become one of my favorite tropes, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book had that. I loved the banter between Rogue and Ara — they’re both snarky and witty, plus with the romantic tension, it made the dialogue that much better. Speaking of romantic tension, yes there is spice but not so much of it that it overrides the plot, which I loved. For me, this would probably be on the 3/5 level of spice. This book had a ton of plot twists and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

High on Tropes and Satisfaction
Format: Kindle
This is a great Romantasy book full of action, adventure, and everything you look for in this genre. I won’t lie: it does kinda feel like the author found every common trope from every successful book of this kind and threw them all into this novel. But if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Especially in romance, there’s a large audience who has specific expectations, and they want them every time. Nothing wrong with that and many times I’m one of them. I have no idea what defines a spoiler honestly, so spoiler alert!!!!!!! Tropes include: Only one bed at the inn/bar Dissatisfaction with life before hunk appears Lost royalty The chosen one Montage of dress up time followed by shocked hunk Forbidden romance between two from rival peoples Power that cannot be controlled, simply guided/asked Gathering intel at the inn/bar FMC who knows how to fight/use weapons well There’s probably more but no need to list them all. Good story and I would recommend!

OUTSTANDING
Format: Kindle
This was very, very good. The world is vast and characters are complex. There is a good plot with a whole lot going on. This is well written. Good twists and turns and some heart breaking moments. You will love these characters, they have heart and loyalty. I am hoping that there will be several more books. We've yet to see anything from the Sea Court but only a mention of them here and there. The Wood Court was given a quick couple of scenes, and only as far as some warriors, we've yet to enter their court and the Shadow Court, I'm not sure if they will be a force for good or bad, but they definitely will play a much bigger role moving forward. This is primarily the Ice and Air Courts. Told in multiple views, which I loved, it gives you a chance to see things from different eyes. There's alot of political maneuvering and deception. I loved it and will pick up the next book as it becomes available. If you like The Fae and the courts, you should love this. I think the author has mucn in store for us.

Definitely worth the read!
Format: Kindle
After taking a deep breath and taking in that wicked twist of an ending, I have finally composed myself. My first thought when I started this book was that I love Reyna's character. I was intrigued by her connection with her familiar and the Ruin that is plaguing her land. It came as no surprise that she took her sister's place in an attempt to protect her. When they reach the Air Court everything slows down. This is where it was iffy for me. First of all, I like multiple POV's in books however 7 is a bit much. It starts to interrupt the story line. I felt like I was finally making progress connecting with one character, then it was switched to another person. I felt they all had necessary or pertinent information but not necessarily were they all POV worthy. The only other thing that annoyed me was that Reyna constantly was " trapped." She would rush off without thinking, only to need rescuing. She is brilliant in a fight, but she really doesn't think through anything. Lorcan is amazing. I know he might be on the "bad" list, but his background is so interesting. Eislyn(Reyna's sister) is really so sweet, but calculating. I enjoyed her and Thane's dialogue. The author did an amazing job with the imagery in this book. Everything was so detailed it was easy to fall into the scene. I love unexpected twists and while part of the ending I expected, I wasn't expecting how it took place. All in all, I found it very entertaining and I am very invested in continuing this series. Favorite quotes: "The truth may be twisted but never false." "Who was she if she was not the enemy of the Air Court? What was her purpose of she no longer has that?" "In a war-torn land, love was always a lie."

Great Read!!! Great story!!!
Format: Kindle
The series is long, but Ms. Wolfhart does a fantastic job of weaving this tale while bringing so much to the characters. Surprises and plot twists along the way to keep you intrigued. There is some graphic sex, but is no way the focal point. Grammar was excellent (a rare find with a lot of self publishers) with only a few noted errors. I rarely give 4 stars, let alone 5.
