Our favorite hardy fig!  Most resilient and cold hardy fig generally available. Excellent quality fruit: medium-large, velvety soft, dark purple figs feature a very sweet, rich, thick strawberry pink pulp and very thin edible skin. Just delicious! Fast growing and highly productive! We've been growing Chicago Hardy successfully in KY since the early 2000s and it thrives in our unheated zone 6 high tunnel.  Survivability outdoors in KY has been 100% but fruit yields when grown outdoors in Kentucky have been low.  However, Chicago Hardy fig thrives in warmer locations all the way to the Gulf of America (zones 7b and up).

Discovered in Chicago, Illinois by Fred Borne, growing in an urban location in the 1970s. Very cold hardy. When left unprotected in colder winter areas (zones 5 and 6), this fig will almost always die back to the ground, only to sprout back from the roots in spring and produce figs that ripen in late summer! Unlike most other figs it does not need 1-Year old or older growth to fruit. This is very rare and useful for people wanting to grow figs in KY, IN, IL, OH, NY, etc.  In warmer areas such as MS, GA, LA, (or in colder areas under protection in the winter), it thrives and does exceptionally well, even in the extreme humidity and heat of the Gulf. One Gulf Mississippi grower told us it's one of his best figs of all (Carriere, MS).  Without winter protection in zones 6-7 it usually will die back to the ground, or very close to the ground.

This fig is an excellent starter fig or addition to any urban landscape, edible landscaping. permaculture, orchard or fig collection. Disease resistant. Mt. Etna type cold hardy fig. Highly recommended!

NATURALLY GROWN - no synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, fungicides, neo-nictinoids, or other pesticides or toxic ag chemicals used at our nursery

Site requirements: Full sun location. Figs will grow in a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained. Protected locations, such as on the South, East or West side of a building is ideal.

Size at maturity: 8-15', depending on location, climate and care.

Pollination: This fig requires no pollination in order to set fruit. Fruits are seedless.

Resistant to: Cold winter temps. Also resistant to fungus, rots, and fig rust on leaves. Figs are known for remarkable disease and insect resistance. Ants can get interested in figs and heavy rains can make the current ripe figs rot, so keep well-picked. Figs continue to put on new fruit constantly until frost.

Hardiness: USDA zones 7-10. Winter protection in zone 6-7 recommended.

Plant size: CHOOSE SIZE. Bare-Root shipped February-April. May-October shipped potted in special tree pots.

OUR NURSERY IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN 100% FIG BUD MITE FREE.

"...Thank you for the fig plants. They looked great, strongly rooted and ready to grow, which they’re doing now."

Great book, but the other book of the same author is much better
Format: Hardcover
This is a very high quality book, chock a block full of information about construction sites, with lots of imaginative flaps, things that swivel, move, and fold. HOWEVER...it is not as good as "The Ultimate Book of Vehicles" by the same author. The "Vehicles" book is more appropriate for kids 3 years and up: It is still full of awesome flaps, swivels, and things that move, but it is simpler, with pictures of the vehicle, the name of the vehicle, and maybe a few names of the parts of the vehicle. You open up a flap to see inside, make it move, etc. My son found it very interesting. The "Construction" is really aimed for older kids, I'm guessing 5 and up, maybe even older. There are just so many words on the page, and so much information. The flaps are not as interesting as the previous book, and I found many of the moving parts to be "sticky", and my 3 year old ripped quite a few out within a week of reading the book. We have not ripped anything from the "Vehicle" book. So I would say if you have an older kid who wants to gain a lot of knowledge about construction sites, this book is for you. But if you have a younger child (3 and up, any younger and they'd destroy the book), get the "Vehicle" book.

This book has been a winner in our house since it arrived. Each page has so many flaps, spins, pulls and movement. So many new words and easy explanations for the kids. The pictures are beautifully designed and each time we look through it we find more details we missed! The book is an excellent purchase and definitely worth every penny!

Best Construction Kids book
Format: Hardcover
My nephew can look at this book for hours. It is such a cool book even for adults. It is a more delicate child’s book as their are lots of demonstrations and paper pieces that move. The house across the street is being torn down and rebuilt and he will sit and point to the book and say this is what they are doing today. I think this book is one of my nephews most prized possessions. It’s a great book that can grown with them for a few years. He is only 3 but this could easily engage a 5 or 6 year old. There is lots of details and the book is really well designed.

Fun, but fragile
Format: Hardcover
This is a cool book, and my 2.5 year old son LOVES it. However it is important to note that it will be destroyed very quickly. There are lots of flaps and moving parts and it is very easy to accidentally rip them off if you try to move one in a way it's not meant for. I ripped more than 1 myself.
