Wildflower meadow establishment

Site location and Preparation:

Wildflower meadows need an open sunny area with at least 6 hours of full sun per day to thrive. Reduce weeds on the soil surface prior to sowing – good site prep is crucial for success. Try not to skimp on this part of the process. Your site should be as free of existing vegetation as possible. Sod removal, seedbank removal, solarization, sheet mulching, digging, and any combination thereof are all options. Tilling, however, is not recommended as it will bring a whole host of weed seeds to the surface where they will germinate – they are best left buried!

Timing:

In the Willamette Valley, September through November is the best time for planting wildflower seed mixes. They can still be planted into late winter, but this is not optimal. Most of these species need some exposure to cool temperatures and damp conditions before germination can occur – and the period of exposure varies from species to species. If planted too late in the fall/winter season, some species may not receive their required stratification period and, therefore, may not germinate.

Seeding Tips:

Seed/Sq Ft: A common target seeding rate for the Willamette Valley is 30 – 60 seeds/sq. ft. With the lower end being on a very clean site and the upper end being a site with some existing vegetation.

One option is to mix the seed with a cutting agent for the best distribution. Inert materials such as vermiculite, coarse-textured sand, rice hulls, and sawdust are all viable options. Mix seed with equal or greater amount of cutting agent. To help achieve a more uniform distribution you can cut the mixture in half. Apply half walking in one direction and the other half walking in a perpendicular direction.

It is OK to cover seed with a light dusting of soil (sift potting soil through a sieve to dust the seeded area with fine soil). Cover only until you can barely see the cutting agent – no more. Some seed species need light to germinate. However, this very thin layer may help hasten germination and help minimize seed predation.

Post-seeding care:

Watering: If there is no rain in the immediate forecast, water in the newly sown seeds.  Also, if there is no rainfall within a few days, water only lightly as needed until you see some seeds sprouting.

Fertilizing: It is not necessary to fertilize your wildflower meadow under normal conditions. Native plants do not require fertilizer, and the application of fertilizer with high nitrogen content will tend to encourage weed growth.

I am super white and have great skin which is super surprising ...
I just started using this product and I wanted to write because I thought some of the reviews were mixed when I read them. I used to use Zinka's spray but they changed their formula and now it is a greasy mess, that never dries do not buy that, I wrote the company and they do not care. First and foremost this bottle is heavy so I am not sure if the shaker ball is heavy or what but a 6oz bottle should not be this heavy so that might be a marketing ploy, hope I don't run out and just have a shaker ball. I am super white and have great skin which is super surprising as my childcare was being dumped off at the local pool in TX without sunscreen during the summers, but I attribute that to using a zinc based sunscreen for the past 10-15 years. I use this everyday, rain or shine as I live in TX and it never rains long and winter here has sunshine too. I use it on my face, hands and decolletage. Yes, my face, under my make up or not. Here are the issues, this makes a super white paste that does not fade into the skin if you go too heavy. So you have to rub it in and even then there is a whiteness, and I am already a white gal. I too am longing for a day of clear zinc sunscreen. But none on the market I have found that are not an oily mess that cause breakouts. I like the dry texture of this spray, and if I spray a thin layer I do not need to rub, so that is perfect for me on my face as most make up I put over it has spf protection anyways, so no problem there, and this stuff stays on 12 hours or more. I think the cost is high, I used to pay around $10 a bottle for zinka but it was not as heavy as this so I will see how long this lasts. But so far except for the cost and the having to rub it in I really like this product.

My favorite sunscreen
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I love this sunscreen and have been carrying a can in my bag all this summer. To address a couple of common complaints: “It’s not sheer at all”: “Sheer” does not mean the same thing as “clear,” people. This spray is white and absolutely does rub in to be sheer as advertised. It leaves a slight (“sheer”) white tinge after rubbing in, but it’s not super noticeable on my pale skin. It might be more problematic on darker skin tones. (Also, it should be noted that there is literally no such thing as clear mineral sunscreen- you will have to choose between a product like this and a clear one containing endocrine disruptors. I’d rather look a little pasty, personally.) “My whole family used this and got burned”: You need to shake the can before spraying, as per the instructions. These sprays are made of zinc (the active, protective ingredient) in a liquid suspension. If you spray without shaking the can first, you risk getting all liquid and no zinc particles, and then yes, you will burn. I’m pretty sensitive and this sunscreen has not failed me yet. “It’s hard to get off”: This is true. It is hard to get off. But why would you want a sunscreen to come off easily?? This stuff is water resistant to an impressive degree. In the evening if it takes a vigorous scrubbing to get it off, I consider the exfoliation a bonus. Also, my nozzles have worked just fine and the cans last me quite a good amount of time.

It really is water resistant
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This stuff is great. Normally when buying a green sunscreen, I have to sacrifice the aerosol feature and default to a lotion. This has a very neutral scent and sprays easily and evenly. It is zinc-based, so it will leave a white haze on your skin. I did need to rub it in after spraying, which helped minimize the white hue. It does love bathing suits, so be prepared to also rub the zinc powder into your bathing suit, otherwise it will be spray painted white. I used this while tubing and did not get burned--just nice and toasty-tan. The biggest downside is that it has a very slight stickiness/tackiness to it. I showered twice before I finally felt like it was all off my skin. But at least it didn't come off in the river!

Leaves skin WHITE and chalky!
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This sunscreen is the worst. it leaves your skin feeling chalky, and totally white. it is difficult to get it off. I accidentally bought it twice two years apart thinking it was the one I liked, but nope. floated the river and even trying to rub it off in the water wouldn't remove the white cast on my skin all day. If you don't mind chalky skin and looking white, then go for it.

Great convenient nontoxic spray sunblock option that really works!
Size: 6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I am very serious about nontoxic products for my family, particularly for my young children. I also insist on sunscreen almost every day. The unfortunate thing is that I really dislike actually applying sunscreen! lol! I don't mind on normal mornings (and we usually use the Green Screen Organic Sunscreen SPF 32 Original - Vegan - Gluten-free or Babo Botanicals SPF 40 Daily Sheer Facial Sunscreen, Unscented), but when we are on the go or at the beach, I wanted to make it as easy as possible to apply. We bought this for a beach getaway over the summer and it really surprised me. It is an easy application (shake, spray, rub) and it really worked. Two children and two adults used this on the entire body and face along with some extra stick protection on the face. I reapplied a few times, but not religiously and no one got a burn... no one really even got a tan. It says that it is sweat and water proof up until a certain point and I believe it really is because we were in scorching heat on the beach (in the water too) and no one had any issues. The great thing is that it really did make application easy so I think we reapplied more appropriately than we would have with a regular tube of sublock. I am not experienced with spray sunblocks so I cannot compare with others, but I believe it is similar. Note, since this is a nontoxic sublock that is zinc based, it does go on white and also sprays whatever it gets on white, but I didn't have any problems. It rubs in very easily and seemed to come off of carpet, clothes, etc. very easily as well. This is now a regular go-to for us even on non-beach days.
