Simply add water to the bottom reservoir and set the pot on top of the mat stand. The capillary mat absorbs water from the reservoir and supplies the necessary moisture to the plant's soil. The capillary action maintains a perfect moisture level for plants that require lightly damp soil. The system requires a pot with drainage holes that allow the soil to contact the watering mat. The Watermaid mat is 3” in diameter and can fit pot sizes up to 5”, provided that the bottom of the pot has a diameter of 3” or less. PLEASE NOTE: The mat works best with potting soil that contain peat or coco coir and will not work with coarse bark mixes, which prevent the uptake of water from the bottom.
