Lapoanum' Philodendron – Rare Leaf Morphology, Collector Status and Climbing Growth

Philodendron sp. nov. lapoanum is a newly described species by botanist Thomas Croat, known for its elongated, paddle-like leaves and elegant venation. This species shows a clean, glossy green surface with a refined, narrow midrib and subtle lateral veins, giving it a sleek, minimalist look. The foliage remains lance-shaped even in maturity, with gently curved margins and a consistent upright form.

As a climbing species, lapoanum thrives when given vertical support and stable warmth. It’s rarely found in cultivation and offers a fresh take for collectors seeking out lesser-known Philodendron species with sculptural appeal and steady, manageable growth.

Foliage traits and growth behavior

  • Leaf shape: Elongated lanceolate to narrowly elliptical, tapering at both ends
  • Surface: Glossy green, slightly leathery with fine parallel venation
  • Growth type: Moderate-speed climber with long internodes and aerial roots
  • Indoor size: Can reach 1.5 – 2 m with support
  • Texture: Smooth and structured, strong midrib and upright leaf stance

Natural habitat and scientific background

Philodendron lapoanum was described by Dr. Thomas Croat and originates from tropical forests in the Chocó region of Colombia. It grows epiphytically, climbing trees in warm, humid rainforest conditions with filtered light and consistent rainfall. Its morphology distinguishes it from other lanceolate species by the elegant venation and glossy sheen. The species name ‘lapoanum’ refers to the locality of Lapo, near where the type specimen was collected. Like most aroids, it is toxic if ingested – keep out of reach of pets and children.

Philodendron lapoanum care instructions

  • Light: Bright, filtered light helps maintain gloss and compact internodes
  • Watering: Let top 2 – 3 cm of substrate dry before watering again
  • Humidity: Performs best at 60 – 80%; stable conditions preferred
  • Temperature: Ideal range 18 – 28 °C – avoid drafts or cold exposure
  • Soil: Well-draining aroid mix with bark, coir, perlite, and leaf compost
  • Repotting: Every 1 – 2 years, or when rootbound
  • Fertilising: Monthly during active growth with diluted liquid fertiliser
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings with at least one node and aerial root
  • Hydroponics: Adapts to semi-hydro in high humidity environments
  • Pruning: Cut long runners or remove older leaves as needed

Common issues and how to address them

  • Leaf yellowing: Usually linked to overwatering or poor drainage
  • Slow growth: Normal in low light – increase brightness or add humidity
  • Pale foliage: May indicate nutrient deficiency or compacted roots
  • Pests (thrips, mites): Monitor undersides; treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap
  • Drooping vines: Provide vertical support for climbing and healthier form

Additional tips for thriving growth

Use a moss pole or coir support to train Philodendron lapoanum vertically. Its growth remains tidy and minimal when given structure and space. Rotate regularly for even growth and clean leaves gently to preserve the glossy surface. This species prefers consistency – once placed in the right environment, it settles in and grows steadily without fuss.

Etymology and scientific description

The genus name Philodendron comes from Greek – “philo” (love) and “dendron” (tree), referencing the climbing nature of the plant. The specific epithet 'lapoanum' was given by Dr. Thomas Croat in honor of the region where the plant was first identified. The species is considered newly described (sp. nov.), and only recently available to collectors.

Price And Comfort Conscious? Buy These!
Size: 10.5, Color: Black Leather
For the price, these are a great value. Super comfortable. I was looking for a shoe I could wear all day. Usually, this means you need rubber soles (no wood). You can't resole many one-piece rubber sole heels, but that's fine. Rarely do I do that since the top of the shoe shows so much wear, it makes me want to get a new pair of shoes no matter how much shoe-shining I do. I own Saks 5th Avenue brand shoes, Cole Haan, and many other pricey shoes. Sure these Clark's don't look as sharp as Italian-made shoes. But Clark's are comfortable. With this particular shoe, they struck the right balance between fashionable and functional--a rare feat indeed! My feet are normal width (D). Half my shoes are 11, the other 10.5. I got these in 10.5 and they fit fine. The toe box is only slightly snug, but I'm hoping they will stretch out in a month or so. I probably should have done 11's. If you are in the middle like me, err on a half size larger. I had a chance to try these on at a store (hesitated to buy at first). The toe box is long and the 11 seemed kind of big, so I went down a notch. In hindsight, 11 was the right size. I couple things I could do without are the side slits that have elastic. They are minimal though. And at the end of the day, you probably don't need to untie your shoes to kick these off, but I don't recommend that. I was also not crazy about the inner lining. It kind of looks like pleather, to be totally honest. Either that or it's super thin and shiny leather. They have a cheap look to them on the inside, but who cares because you don't see them. Overall, great shoes. Way to go Clark! These ones are winners and they look great with suit pants or nice jeans.

Good quality
Size: 13, Color: Black Leather, Size: 13, Color: Black Leather
These fit true to size in length but like any cap toe Oxford, you will have a lil more space at the tip. The width is a little narrow for regular feet but still fit properly. If you have wide feet definitely go with the wide option. The leather feels nice and soft. They are fairly comfortable. I even compared them to cap toe Nunn Bush shoes I have and they’re more comfy. The front of the shoe/tongue doesn’t dig into my ankle like the Nunn Bush pair does.

Good deal
Size: 8.5, Color: Black Leather
Honestly for the price there hard to beat. They look nice and are comfortable indeed, I like the silent step "non clackers" . For the size I'll recommend your normal size as they have a built in stretch part for extra comfort unless you know you have wide feet then go for the W, my 8 1/2 (non wide) fit perfectly without an issue. I'm just surprised that they came not in a box, there wrapped up well though didn't come damaged. For fancy shoes that don't come in a box there pretty good. 👍

The perfect work shoe
Size: 13, Color: Black Leather
I wear dress shoes everyday and I’m on my feet a lot. My wife is the same way and would always praise Clarks, but I didn’t think much of it. I’d always get Nunn Bush or something like that, but they weren’t comfortable or last very long. I happened to be at a Clarks store that was closing one time and picked up a pair of these and boy did everything change that day. Not only are they comfortable they last a long time. I get about one pair a year. That doesn’t mean they only last a year, I just try to keep a nice looking pair. I can wear them all day and my feet don’t hurt. And you get all the comfort without the bulkiness of other comfort footwear companies. They fit nice and don’t pinch or rub anywhere. They are definitely worth the full price, but they go on sale regularly to an even better deal so keep an eye out.

Classic elegance with unmatched comfort
Size: 11 Wide, Color: Black Leather, Size: 11 Wide, Color: Black Leather
I recently purchased the Clarks Men's Oxford shoes, and I must say, I am thoroughly impressed. These shoes effortlessly blend classic elegance with unmatched comfort, making them a perfect addition to any wardrobe. The first thing that caught my attention was the timeless design. The Oxfords feature a sleek silhouette and high-quality leather craftsmanship that exude sophistication. Whether paired with formal attire or dressed down for a more casual look, these shoes consistently elevate my style. Beyond their aesthetics, the comfort level is exceptional. The cushioned insole provides excellent support throughout the day, making them ideal for long hours on my feet. Additionally, the outsole offers a confident grip, ensuring stability on various surfaces. I also appreciate the attention to detail in the stitching and overall construction. It's evident that Clarks prioritizes durability, and I believe these shoes will stand the test of time. One minor aspect worth mentioning is the initial break-in period. Like most high-quality leather shoes, they required a few wears to conform to my feet perfectly. However, once they molded, the fit became incredibly comfortable. In conclusion, the Clarks Men's Oxford shoes offer a winning combination of style, comfort, and durability. Whether for formal events or daily wear, they consistently deliver a polished and refined look. I highly recommend these Oxfords to anyone seeking a timeless and reliable footwear option.
