The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends measuring the temperature rectally in children up to 3-4 years of age when fever is suspected.
✔ RECTAL measurements are the fastest and the most accurate. Lubricate the tip with petroleum jelly and gently insert ~1/2" (1 cm) into the child’s rectum.
✔ ORAL use is a convenient method for children 5 years of age and above. Wait 15 minutes after the child has finished eating or drinking before taking the temperature.
✔ ARMPIT (Axillary) use is also an option, although not as accurate as rectal or oral temperature in a cooperative child. From a medical standpoint, this method might provide inaccurate readings, and should not be used if precise measurements are required.
