This shade-loving fern is sure to make a statement in your tropical garden or as part of your indoor plant gang - it’s the Asplenium Crissie which is also known as Birds Nest Fern.
This is a unique looking plant with lime green leathery fronds that grow from the plant’s centre in straight stems and develop crested feathery tips to give the effect of a bird’s nest.
It’s a really unusual fern for texture and looks great mixed with other dainty ferns in a pot, hanging basket or shady border. We shouldn’t have favourites, but this near the top of our list.
Many Asplenium species are frost tender, so plant Crissy in a cool shaded position with ample moisture and humidity. She needs free-draining organically-rich soil or potting mix, and plenty of water.

- What to use me for: I look great in a pot on the coffee table, in a balcony hanging basket, or under a tree in a shady garden
- I grow to: I’ll reach 60cm high and 1.2m wide
- Where to place me: Full shade or dappled shade please I’m practically a vampire that burns in the sunlight
- How far to space me: I’m wider than I am tall, so give me 1 metre outside. A pot will constrain my size if you’re looking for indoor friends
- Soil Conditions: I thrive in rich soil loaded with plant food like organic matter. If your soil is thin give me regular liquid feeds and mulch my roots. In a pot I need free-draining potting mix please.
