Crassula tenelli is a compact and graphic succulent with thick, slightly fuzzy bluish-silver green leaves arranged in a tight spiral around sturdy stems. Its harmonious and minimalist silhouette makes it a decorative plant in its own right — precise, orderly, without excess.

Native to the rocky soils of southern Africa, it belongs to the large family of cacti and succulents, known for their drought resistance. Its velvety foliage and minimal care needs make it an excellent candidate for our selection of low-maintenance plants.

Exposure & Location

Crassula tenelli enjoys abundant filtered light — the more it receives, the more its foliage develops its characteristic silvery and velvety reflections. It tolerates partial shade but gradually loses its compactness in insufficient light, with stems stretching toward the light. To find the best location, refer to our guide on easy plants for urban apartments.

  • Ideal exposure: bright indirect light — east or west windowsill, bright living room or office.
  • Tolerates: gentle direct morning sun, sheltered outdoor areas from April to October.
  • Avoid: intense direct afternoon sun behind glass that burns the foliage.
  • Temperature: 15–28 °C, minimum 10 °C in winter.
  • Substrate: very well-draining — cactus soil or universal soil + sand and perlite.

Each plant is unique: the shade, density, and arrangement of leaves naturally vary depending on light and season.

Watering & Care

Like all succulents, Crassula tenelli stores water in its thick leaves — it easily withstands several weeks without watering. Yellowing or softening leaves almost always indicate overwatering, never underwatering, as explained in our article on causes of yellowing leaves.

  • Watering: very infrequent — only when the substrate is completely dry.
  • Frequency: about every 2 weeks in summer; once a month in winter.
  • Water: room temperature water, preferably non-calcareous.
  • Drainage: essential — pot must have drainage holes, empty saucer after watering.
  • Fertilizer: diluted cactus fertilizer, once every 6 to 8 weeks in spring-summer.

Each plant is unique: watering frequency naturally varies depending on pot size, ambient temperature, and season.

Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations

The soft texture and silvery gray-green tones of Crassula tenelli naturally harmonize with raw materials and minimalist atmospheres. To create a coherent mini succulent garden, explore our selection of indoor succulents.

  • In a mini succulent garden: pair it with a Gasteria Hybrid Aurora and an Aloe Spider for a trio of distinct textures and shapes — the spiral velvet of the Crassula, the spotted leaves of the Gasteria, and the spiky rosettes of the Aloe.
  • On a desk or shelf: its compact H15 cm size fits easily in a small space — place it in a Lago cream decorative pot whose neutral shade highlights the silvery reflections of the foliage without competing with them.
  • In contrasting shapes: pair it with an Aloe with long pointed leaves and a trailing Sedum Tornado — the compact, soft spiral of the Crassula, the upright rosette of the Aloe, and the hanging stems of the Sedum create a trio with three very different forms.
  • In an open terrarium: place it on a bed of light gravel with some raw stones — the contrast between the velvety leaves and the mineral substrate creates a zen and clean composition. Add a white relief decorative pot to enhance the effect.

Verdeia Tips

  • Dust the velvety foliage with a soft brush: the slightly fuzzy leaves accumulate dust that dulls their silvery appearance — a soft brush every 3 to 4 weeks is enough; a damp cloth would damage the velvety texture.
  • Propagate easily in spring: a leaf or stem segment placed on dry substrate roots quickly — it is one of the easiest succulents to multiply using cutting techniques, ideal for creating mini collections.
  • Avoid overly humid rooms: unlike tropical plants, Crassula does not tolerate high ambient humidity — avoid bathrooms or humid kitchens to prevent stem rot.

Keeps areas separated
Color: Black, Size: 6 Panel
Item arrived quickly. I use this to keep my cats out of a part of the cellar. Works great. They've figured out how to slip through side. I made a panel that covers those spots. Still the best item to keep area separate.

These are the terrible. They keep falling down. The bottom part doesn't stay tight so it keeps turning making it in possible to stay standing. Its the absolute worst!
